The youngster has done well to maintain a .291 batting average and .337 on-base percentage, but he'll need to start stealing bases with more frequency to warrant more fantasy interest in shallower formats.

Almonte went 2-for-3 with a home run and walk in Tuesday's win over the Brewers. In addition, he stole a base and finished with two RBI and two runs scored.

Almonte's well-rounded day at the plate should only earn him more frequent starts as the Padres look to piece together their outfield with an eye on 2015. Since coming over from the Mariners in a July 31 deal, Almonte is batting 18-for-57 (.316) over 18 games for San Diego.

Almonte went 4-for-5 at the plate while adding a double and a run scored in Tuesday's game against the Dodgers.

Almonte has been playing real well since being acquired from the Mariners. In his last eight games, Almonte is 12-for-28 with one home run, two doubles and four RBI. Almonte now has a .239/.278/.352 slash line in 142 at-bats this year.

Almonte was a factor in making the Cardinals' four-run second inning worse than it could have been despite not getting charged with an error in center field, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. He attempted a high-degree-of-difficulty catch on a ball hit by Jhonny Peralta in center field, then turned a sinking line drive by Matt Carpenter into a double when he missed on a sliding attempt.

Defense doesn't typically matter a lot in fantasy circles, though it could loom large for Almonte's future playing time. The Padres will have Cameron Maybin eligible to return from suspension shortly, and Almonte's roster spot is precarious.

Almonte went 2-for-4 with his second homer of the season in Wednesday's win over the Rockies.

With the Padres content to assess their options for the future while they remain out of the playoff race at this point in the season, Almonte should get semi-regular run in the outfield, especially while Cameron Maybin (suspension) and Carlos Quentin (disabled list) remain unavailable. He's picked up starts in four of the previous five games, and could see more at-bats headed his way following Wednesday's two-hit performance.

Almonte will start in center field and bat eighth in his Padres debut Friday.

The 25-year-old looked overmatched during his tenure with the Mariners early in the year, as he hit just .198/.248/.292 in 27 games, but it looks like he may split time with Will Venable in center until Cameron Maybin (suspension) returns. Almonte hit .267/.333/.390 with six homers and seven steals in 72 games with Triple-A Tacoma after his demotion in early May.

Almonte will join the Padres on Friday, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Despite his early-season struggles with the Mariners, Almonte will likely step into a part-time role with the Padres immediately upon arrival. Abraham was traded Thursday along with Triple-A reliever Stephen Kohlscheen in exchange for Chris Denorfia.
