Sat Sep 15 201223:22Zito stellar in victory over Diamondbacks
Barry Zito was stellar in Saturday's victory over the Diamondbacks, allowing only one run on six hits over 6 2/3 innings.
He struck out four while walking just one on the evening. The only damage against him came on a solo homer by Justin Upton in the fourth inning. Sure, he hasn't quite lived up to his massive free agent contract, but Zito has been a fairly serviceable starter for the Giants this season, posting a 12-8 record, 4.21 ERA and 99/65 K/BB ratio over 166 2/3 innings. He'll look to replicate this fine outing when he takes on the Rockies at home on Thursday.

Mon Sep 10 201200:05Barry Zito combines on shutout of Dodgers
Barry Zito shut out the Dodgers for 6 1/3 innings to pick up a win on Sunday night.
Five relievers went on to complete the shutout in the 4-0 game. Zito got a big assist with Matt Kemp out of the lineup tonight, as Kemp is a lifetime .462 hitter with three homers in 52 at-bats versus Zito. The Giants have now won seven straight Zito starts, even though he's turned in just three quality starts during that span. Zito is 11-8 with a 4.33 ERA.

Thu Aug 30 201200:15Zito lasts just 2 1/3 innings
Barry Zito recorded just five outs in Wednesday's 6-4 win over the Astros, allowing three runs on seven hits.
Zito was yanked after allowing hits to four of the first five batters he faced in the third inning, but it's possible his recent back soreness contributed to the early exit. Nevertheless, the outing was his shortest of the season, and leaves him with a 4.42 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 85/62 K/BB ratio through 148 2/3 frames. Provided he's healthy, he'll get the Diamondbacks at home on Monday.

Fri Aug 24 201201:23Barry Zito takes shutout into ninth in win
Barry Zito surrendered two runs in eight-plus innings in beating the Braves on Thursday.
Zito took a shutout into the ninth, but he was pulled after consecutive singles to start the inning and both baserunners came around to score off Jeremy Affeldt. If only Zito would have been taken out after eight, it would have been his fifth start this season with no runs allowed over seven or more innings. On David Price, Felix Hernandez and Hiroki Kuroda, with six apiece, have more than five.

Barry Zito took a no-decision in Sunday's 9-6 win over the Rockies, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings.
Zito struck out three in his third non-quality start in four outings. The owner of a 5.05 ERA in 35 2/3 innings since the All-Star break, Zito's ragged mixed-league glory has long since faded. He'll get the Padres in San Diego next weekend.

Barry Zito was lifted after allowing seven runs in 4 1/3 innings against the Mets on Thursday.
Zito has allowed 11 runs in his last two starts, taking his ERA from 3.75 to 4.27. With the Cardinals up next on the schedule, Zito needs to be sat down in NL-only leagues until he starts throwing better.

Sun Jul 29 201201:29Zito hit hard in loss to Dodgers
Barry Zito was hit hard in Saturday's loss to the Dodgers, allowing four runs on seven hits over his 5 1/3 innings of work.
Zito fanned four while walking one on the evening. Matt Kemp got the scoring started early in this one, launching a two-run homer to center field in the first inning. The Dodgers would tack on a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly, and another in the sixth on an RBI double from Jerry Hairston Jr. With the loss, Zito falls to 8-7 on the season, though he still owns a very respectable 3.89 ERA over his first 20 starts. He'll look to put this one behind him and get back in the win column when he squares off against the Mets at home on Thursday.

Sun Jul 22 201217:45Barry Zito goes seven strong in no-decision
Barry Zito allowed three runs on five hits in seven innings of Sunday's 12-inning loss to the Phillies.
Zito struck out seven and walked one. His two biggest mistakes of the day came in the fourth and eighth innings, where he served up solo home runs to John Mayberry. Zito has had a few rough patches this season, but has mostly been excellent, and is now the owner of a 3.75 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 66/50 K/BB ratio through 112 2/3 frames. Quality in four of his past five starts, he'll get the Dodgers at home next weekend.

Tue Jul 17 201222:31Barry Zito silences Braves' bats
Barry Zito had little trouble slicing through the Braves' batting order Tuesday, spinning seven shutout innings on just three hits and a walk in the 9-0 win.
He struck out four and needed 106 pitches to get through the seven frames. Zito entered the game with a 5.19 ERA on the road this season and was going up against a hot team, so it's an unexpected superb performance. He'll carry a 3.75 ERA and 1.37 WHIP into Philly this weekend.

Sat Jun 30 201218:58Zito solid in losing effort against Reds
Barry Zito pitched a solid game in a losing effort against the Reds on Saturday, surrendering just one run on five hits over his six innings of work.
Zito struggled with his command again, walking six on the game, while striking out three. The only run allowed was courtesy of a bases loaded walk to Ryan Hanigan in the fourth inning. While he's been inconsistent, and downright laughable at times, Zito is now 6-6 with a 3.84 ERA and has been one of the best fifth starters in all of baseball. He'll go in search of his seventh victory when he does battle against the Pirates in Pittsburgh on Friday.

Tue Jun 26 201201:48Barry Zito goes seven scoreless in win
Barry Zito blanked the Dodgers for seven innings in the Giants' 8-0 victory on Monday.
That's twice in five starts this month that Zito hasn't given up a run. Of course, he's allowed 17 runs in 14 1/3 innings in the other three outings. Tread very carefully.

Wed Jun 20 201201:48Zito implodes, allows 8 runs to Angels
The Angels blasted Barry Zito for eight runs on nine hits over 3 1/3 innings.
He walked three and struck out just one. On June 3, Zito was 5-2 with a 2.98 ERA. In three outings since, he has given up 17 earned runs over 14 1/3 innings and walked more batters than he has struck out to drop to 5-5 with a 4.35 ERA. Bad Barry is back and should be benched in mixed leagues.

Sun Jun 3 201218:52Barry Zito tosses 8 1/3 dominant innings
Barry Zito scattered just four hits across 8 1/3 scoreless innings Sunday, striking out five and walking two as he improved to 5-2 in San Francisco's 2-0 win over the Cubs.
Manager Bruce Bochy gave Zito a chance at his second shutout of the year, but went to Sergio Romo after Zito issued a one-out walk. Zito appeared to hit the skids in mid-May after getting off to a strong start this season, but has now allowed just two runs across his past two starts and 15 1/3 innings. There will surely be more bumps along the road, but San Francisco's $126 million man appears poised to hold his value in mixed leagues. He'll bring a 2.98 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 39/28 K/BB ratio into his Friday start against the Rangers. Even though it's in San Francisco, keep him benched for that one.

Barry Zito bounced back from a rough outing against the Brewers to allow two runs over seven-plus innings Monday in a defeat of the Diamondbacks.
Zito was pulled after giving up John McDonald's pinch-hit homer to start the eighth. The bullpen protected a 4-2 lead from there, giving Zito his fourth win in 10 starts this season. He has a 3.41 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP.

Wed May 23 201216:58Barry Zito loses to Brewers
Barry Zito was tagged for eight runs -- four earned -- in three innings by the Brewers in Wednesday's loss.
Zito and shortstop Brandon Crawford both made big errors during the Brewers' six-run first inning. Given the way he pitched the following two innings, Zito didn't seem destined to last long in this one regardless. His ERA has increased in five consecutive outings and is up to 3.53 now.

Sun May 13 201220:04Barry Zito gets his second win of the year
Barry Zito beat the Diamondbacks by allowing three earned runs over six innings Sunday.
Zito struck out five, walked three and yielded five hits. Although he hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his seven starts this year, Sunday marked his first win since April 8. A home matchup with Oakland next week is a great spot for Zito to at least sustain his current 2.53 ERA.

Thu May 3 201201:44Zito erratic against Marlins
Barry Zito was extremely erratic against the Marlins on Wednesday, allowing one run on two hits and seven walks in just 3 2/3 innings.
Zito struck out just one hitter and threw 91 pitches without getting out of the fourth inning. Even with the poor performance, Zito has been fairly solid as the fifth starter in the Giants rotation. He still owns a 1-0 record and 1.76 ERA, though he hasn't pitched nearly as well as those numbers indicate. He'll look to rebound from this disaster when he takes on the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Monday.

Zito has now allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his first four starts, and is sporting a 1.67 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 14/6 K/BB ratio through 27 innings. He'll next try out his smoke-and-mirrors approach against the Marlins on Tuesday.

Fri Apr 20 201222:56Zito strong in no-decision
Barry Zito pitched very well, allowing just two runs on four hits in five innings of work against the Mets on Friday.
Zito struck out two and walked three in the game. He was in line to rack up his second win of the season, before the Giants bullpen imploded in the ninth inning. He now owns a sparkling 1.71 ERA through his first three starts and appears to be providing the Giants with a solid and capable, though extremely overpaid, fifth starter. He'll face a much tougher test when he takes on the Reds in Cincinnati next time out.

Sun Apr 15 201201:29Barry Zito goes seven in Giants' win
Barry Zito surrendered three runs -- two earned -- over seven innings in the Giants' 4-3 win over the Pirates on Saturday.
Zito wasn't involved in the decision; the Giants ended up winning on a Clint Barmes error in the bottom of the ninth. Still, it was another positive outing for the left-hander, albeit against an offense that has looked terrible against everyone thus far. Zito allowed six hits, walked one and struck out four.
