Wed Aug 19 202018:54Mariners designate former All-Star Vogelbach for assignment
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners have designated Daniel Vogelbach for assignment barely a year after he was an All-Star selection. The Mariners made the move Wednesday before the start of a five-game homestand. Vogelbach was hitting .094 with only five base hits and two home runs since the season began. He had yet to play a game in the field this season at first base and was reduced to only being a designated hitter. “Vogey is kind of locked in (to one spot). We tried to play him some at first base last year, not his strength. His strength is in the batter’s box and hopefully hitting it over the fence, but he doesn’t bring a whole lot other than the bat,” manager Scott Servais said. “When the bat is your big carrying tool, you have to hit. It’s a do-good league. Where we are at right now, we’re just going to give some of those at-bats and opportunities to some other players.” A year ago, Vogelbach had a strong first half to the season, hitting 21 home runs and driving in 51 runs before... Sat Jan 11 202000:21Mariners reach deals with Haniger, Smith, Tuivailala
SEATTLE (AP) — The Mariners avoided arbitration after reaching agreements Friday with outfielders Mitch Haniger and Mallex Smith and pitcher Sam Tuivailala on contracts for the upcoming season. The three were Seattle's only arbitration-eligible players. Haniger agreed to $3.01 million, Smith $2.35 million and Tuivailala $800,000. Haniger was the most notable of the three. He missed the final 3 1/2 months last season after rupturing a testicle and then having back issues during his recovery. Haniger was limited to 63 games and batted .220 with 15 homers and 32 RBIs. A year earlier, Haniger was an All-Star after hitting .285 with 26 homers and 93 RBIs and an OPS of .859. Smith slumped last season after a breakout year in 2018. He hit just .227 with a .300 on-base percentage and struck out a career-high 141 times. The upside with Smith was his speed on the bases as he led the majors with 42 stolen bases. Tuivailala missed the first half of last season while recovering from a torn Achilles... [More]
