RHP Henderson Alvarez, who pitched just four times all season because of right shoulder inflammation and went 0-4, was non-tendered by the Marlins on Wednesday. The move makes him a free agent. He last pitched on May 22, and he underwent season-ending surgery in July. His status for 2016 is uncertain.

Alvarez (shoulder) was moved to the 60-day DL on Tuesday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

The Marlins are hoping Alvarez will be ready for spring training after undergoing shoulder surgery in July, but at this point he's without a firm timetable. Tuesday's move simply removes Alvarez from the 40-man roster.

Alvarez had his surgery Tuesday to repair a torn right labrum. The procedure was a debridement that removed debris and damaged tissue in the shoulder joint.

"The surgery was a success and everything that is being reported is that it was very successful," manager Dan Jennings said. The Marlins hope that he'll be ready by spring training, but there's no official timetable for Alvarez's return.

Alvarez has been diagnosed with a tear in his right shoulder and will undergo season-ending arthroscopic surgery, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports.

In many cases, shoulder surgery can be more devastating to a pitcher than Tommy John surgery, so it's fair to wonder if Alvarez will be ready to pitch by the start of the 2016 season. The Marlins haven't issued a recovery timetable for the 25-year-old, but one should become available once he completes the procedure. The Marlins' Opening Day starter, Alvarez was ineffective from the get-go, producing a 6.45 ERA and a 9:7 K:BB ratio over 22.1 innings (four starts) before he was shut down for good in May.
