Brendan Ryan (elbow) is expected to be 100 percent for spring training.
Ryan had surgery in October to remove loose bodies from his right elbow. The 30-year-old is one of the best fielding shortstops in the majors, but he batted just .194/.277/.278 last season. He can be ignored in fantasy leagues.

Wed Oct 3 201220:12Brendan Ryan expected back as M's SS
Mariners manager Eric Wedge anticipates Brendan Ryan being the team's starting shortstop again next season.
Ryan is one of the best defensive shortstops in the game, but he's batted a measly .194/.277/.278 this season. He's entering his final year of arbitration this winter. "I think he's going to hit better," Wedge said. "He's a much better offensive player than .195. If there's ever a player that gets in his own way offensively, Brendan Ryan is it. We're going to try to help him get the hell out of his own way next year. I think he's the best defensive shortstop in the game. A game changer."

It was only his third big fly of the season. Ryan is probably the best defensive shortstop in the major leagues, but he doesn't offer much in the way of fantasy value.

Mon Jul 30 201219:50Yanks rebuffed in pursuit of Brendan Ryan
Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Mariners have turned down a bid from the Yankees for Brendan Ryan.
They must not have offered very much. Ryan is an excellent defensive shortstop, but he's also hitting a paltry .196/.288/.288 this season. The Yanks would have wanted him for a utility role.

Brendan Ryan is hitting .276 (16-for-58) in his last 20 games.
It's at least a sign he's heading in the right direction. Ryan continues to start for his defense, but could be pushed by top prospect Nick Franklin in the second half. Franklin is batting .299 with five home runs and 22 doubles in 73 games at two different levels of the minors.

Thu May 17 201205:13Brendan Ryan: 19 games without extra-base hit
Brendan Ryan went 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored in Wednesday's 9-3 loss to the Indians.
Since manager Eric Wedge indicated on May 4 that Brendan Ryan would remain the team's starting shortstop, Ryan is batting 5-for-31 (.161). He has gone 19 games without an extra-base hit. He will continue to earn at-bats solely because the Mariners have no better option.

Fri May 4 201210:34Mariners sticking with Brendan Ryan
Mariners manager Eric Wedge indicated that Brendan Ryan will remain his starter at shortstop despite his slow start at the plate.
Ryan is batting a paltry .125/.269/.234 thus far, but Wedge still loves what he gives the team defensively. "Ryan takes away more runs at shortstop than anybody," Wedge said. "If we can get a borderline average from him at the plate, we've got a championship-caliber shortstop. But that's up to him. He's got to give us more at the plate." Wedge noted that he doesn't see Kyle Seager as a real option at shortstop. Seager started eight games there last season.

Wed Apr 11 201218:35Brendan Ryan back in lineup Wednesday
Brendan Ryan is back in the M's lineup Wednesday.
Ryan was held out of Tuesday's game due to what Mariners skipper Eric Wedge described as an "accountability issue." The 30-year-old shortstop had problems with tardiness (and goofiness) during his time with the Cardinals, so it's not really a surprise that an incident happened in Seattle. "It's behind us," Wedge said Wednesday. "It's good, everything is clear."
