RHP Matt Cain left after 1 2/3 scoreless innings with a right hamstring strain and will undergo an MRI Saturday. He was 1-1 with a 1.71 ERA in his three previous starts. "It's discouraging, but you can't sit here and dwell on it," Cain said. "Just try to get this thing right and get back out there." Cain said he felt the hamstring tighten on his second-to-last pitch to Gerardo Parra, the final batter he faced. He said the hamstring felt the same on his final pitch to Parra. Cain said he was hoping "that maybe it was something that would release and not be a big deal." But he said when head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner and manager Bruce Bochy came to the mound, "I could tell it was starting to get a little tighter and tighter. Even by the time I came up here (to the clubhouse), it was tight enough to where if I had stayed out there, I would have made it worse."

RHP Matt Cain has every reason to expect to pitch better than his 1-5 record and 5.37 ERA would indicate when he opens a three-game series at Colorado on Friday night. First off, Cain has had more than his fair share of success at Coors Field, going 6-4 with a 4.80 ERA in 16 career starts there. Cain also has pitched better of late, having allowed two or fewer runs in each of his last three starts after having given up two or more in each of his first six. He's coming off a six-inning, one-run effort that produced his first win of the season last Saturday against the Chicago Cubs.

RHP Matt Cain has yet to win a game this season, but his most recent effort sure felt like a winner to the former Cy Young Award winner. Cain held the Arizona Diamondbacks to just one run in seven innings last Sunday in his best outing of the season. He did not get a decision in a game the Giants eventually won 2-1. Cain has had more than his fair share of success against Saturday's opponent, the Chicago Cubs, recording a 6-4 record and 3.08 ERA in 17 starts. Cain has been even better (5-2 with a 2.84) in nine home starts against the Cubs.

He is still looking for his first win of the season, but the confidence is coming. "His stuff has been fine, his bullpens have been great," manager Bruce Bochy said. "Then in the games, things weren't going well. Now I think he realizes, 'Hey, I'm fine. I'm healthy.' "

RHP Matt Cain hasn't pitched a complete game since June 13, 2012. Maybe seeing Blue Jays LHP J.A. Happ on Tuesday night will help him find his old form. That also happens to be the night Cain threw a perfect game against the Houston Astros, whose starting pitcher that night was Happ.

RHP Matt Cain extended his winless streak to 13 games Thursday night in a 17-7 loss to the Rockies. Cain did not record a strikeout in his four-plus innings, just the second time that occurred in 297 career starts. He was charged with eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits.
