C Elias Diaz had right elbow debridement surgery Tuesday and is expected to be out until the middle of July. The rookie was injured in spring training. Diaz made his major league debut late last season with two pinch-hitting appearances and was expected to return to Triple-A Indianapolis to begin this season.

C Elias Diaz will undergo right elbow surgery sometime later this week. Though the team did not offer specifics, Diaz's agent, Gerardo Boscan, tweeted that the rookie would not require Tommy John surgery. The Pirates said they would not have a timetable for Diaz's return until he has the surgery. He was injured in spring training after making his major league debut by making two late-season pinch-hitting appearances in 2015."Obviously, his career's on pause right now, but I think they're very optimistic about the surgery," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "I'm going to wish him well. He's a well-thought-of young player."

C Elias Diaz will undergo elbow surgery sometime later this week, it was revealed Monday. The team's medical staff is confident his ulnar collateral ligament is not torn, which would mean he will likely have an arthroscopic procedure rather than Tommy John ligament transplant surgery.

C Elias Diaz (strained right elbow), who has been on the 15-day disabled list, will seek a second opinion as he continues to feel pain in the elbow. Diaz was expected to be the optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis once healthy but the Pirates fear he may now be facing season-ending Tommy John ligament transplant surgery. Diaz was seemingly a candidate to become the starting catcher next year as C Francisco Cervelli is eligible for free agency at the end of this season but surgery would certainly cloud that picture.

C Elias Diaz (right elbow discomfort) is expected to begin a throwing program in the next day or two. He will be optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis once he is deemed ready to play.

C Elias Diaz was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a strained right elbow, retroactive to March 29. An MRI taken last week showed no structural damage but there is no timetable for his return. Diaz will be assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis when healthy as the Pirates are set behind the plate with C Francisco Cervelli and C Chris Stewart.

Diaz is expected to serve mostly as a late-inning defensive replacement in September.
He leapfrogged ahead of fellow Triple-A catcher Tony Sanchez in 2015. While Diaz is defensively-orientated, he does provide enough offense to at least stick in the majors with perhaps more coming down the road. Reese McGuire, a no. 1 pick in 2013, likely remains atop the organization's catching prospects but Diaz will get a chance to show what he can do in September.
Tue Sep 1 201516:53Diaz recalled from Triple-A on Tuesday
Diaz was recalled from Triple-A on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old has fared well at the Triple-A level this season, hitting .271 with 47 RBI and 16 doubles in 93 games (325 at-bats). He figures to see very limited playing time as a member of the Pirates, and he'll serve as the third point guard behind Francisco Cervelli and Chris Stewart.
Fri Mar 20 201520:31Diaz optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday
Diaz was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Diaz hit .438 in 17 spring at-bats and looked strong defensively. The catcher batted .312/.366/.421 split between Double-A and Triple-A in 2014, breaking a string of four weak-hitting campaigns to start his pro career. If Diaz continues swinging a hot bat at Triple-A, then he'll surely make his big-league debut in 2015 -- though the question remains when.
Mon Mar 9 201520:37Diaz 1-2 with double Monday against Twins
Diaz went 1-for-2 with a double Monday against the Twins.
The catcher is slated to start the season with Triple-A Indy, but has only the injury-prone Francisco Cervelli, Chris Stewart and possibly Tony Sanchez ahead of him on the depth chart. Diaz is already major-league ready defensively -- he threw out a runner Monday, but still needs work at the plate. It wouldn't be surprising to see Diaz make his debut sometime over the summer.
