Sun Mar 25 2012 | 16:36 | Carlos Pena doubles, walks twice |
Carlos Pena doubled and walked twice in his three plate appearances Sunday against the Marlins. |
Pena is typically a slow starter, so it's of little concern that he's batting .148 at the moment. His spring averages the previous three years were .216. .176 and .237. |

Tue Jan 24 2012 | 16:12 | Rays finalize one-year deal with Carlos Pena |
Rays signed 1B Carlos Pena to a one-year, $7.25 million contract. |
The two sides agreed to terms late last week, but the deal was made official Tuesday. Pena, 33, batted .225/.357/.462 with 28 home runs and 80 RBI across 606 plate appearances last season for the Cubs. Tropicana Field isn't nearly as favorable for left-handed power as Wrigley Field, so we're not expecting a major bounceback in his return to the Rays. He hasn't batted higher than .227 since 2008, so he's only a consideration in deeper mixed and AL-only formats. |

Fri Jan 20 2012 | 12:02 | Rays bring back franchise HR leader Pena |
Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Rays and free agent first baseman Carlos Pena have agreed to terms on a one-year deal. |
Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reported earlier Friday that talks were progressing, and evidently a deal has been struck. Heyman says Pena will earn $7.25 million in 2012. It's a great fit, as the Rays could use some more sock to their lineup and had a big hole at first base. Pena, 33, batted .225/.357/.462 with 28 home runs and 80 RBI across 606 plate appearances last season for the Cubs. He was also being pursued by the Indians. |

Fri Jan 20 2012 | 10:54 | Rays are 'in pretty deep' on Carlos Pena |
Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Rays "are in pretty deep" on Carlos Pena. |
A reunion between the two makes perfect sense, and it would seem like money might be the only obstacle in getting something done. Pena has drawn interest from the Indians and has been speculatively linked to the Yankees and Tigers, but it seems likely the momentum is swinging towards the Rays, who have a glaring opening at first base. Pena, 33, batted .225/.357/.462 with 28 home runs and 80 RBI across 606 plate appearances last season for the Cubs. |

Thu Jan 19 2012 | 16:07 | Indians interested in free agent Carlos Pena |
According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, Carlos Pena is drawing interest from the Indians. |
He's also being considered by the Yankees and has been linked to the Tigers. Pena, 33, batted .225/.357/.462 with 28 home runs and 80 RBI across 606 plate appearances last season for the Cubs. He'd make for a solid addition at DH or first base for the Tribe. They've also expressed some interest in Casey Kotchman. |

Mon Jan 16 2012 | 08:56 | Yanks unlikely to sign Carlos Pena as new DH |
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Yankees only have $1-$2 million to spend on a DH. |
If Pena is willing to accept a contract of that value, he'll be welcomed with open arms by the Yankees. But he's likely to do far better financially as teams get more desperate to add power before the start of spring camp. The 33-year-old first baseman batted .225/.357/.462 with 28 home runs and 80 RBI in 606 plate appearances last season for the Cubs. |

Fri Jan 13 2012 | 21:05 | Report: Yanks have Carlos Pena on their radar |
According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, the Yankees now have free agent Carlos Pena on their radar. |
The Yankees are set to trade Jesus Montero to the Mariners in a four-player deal, so they suddenly have a need for another hitter. Pena would make some sense, but they are likely considering other names, as well. The 33-year-old batted .225/.357/.462 with 28 home runs, 80 RBI and an .819 OPS over 606 plate appearances with the Cubs last in 2011. He has also drawn interest from the Indians and Rays this offseason. |

Thu Jan 12 2012 | 15:34 | Indians like Carlos Pena, may try for deal |
According to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Indians like Carlos Pena and went to ownership to see if they could make a deal work. |
However, ownership has yet to make a decision on the matter. Pena, who turns 34 in May, batted .225/.357/.462 with 28 home runs, 80 RBI and an .819 OPS over 606 plate appearances with the Cubs last season. Progressive Field is generally considered pitcher-friendly, but at least caters to left-handed power. The veteran first baseman has also reportedly drawn interest from the Rays. |

Tue Jan 10 2012 | 21:59 | Pena's agent talking to multiple clubs |
Carlos Pena's agent Scott Boras said Tuesday that he is talking to "a number of clubs" about his client. |
The market for Pena has been fairly quiet this winter, leading some to speculate that he could return to the Rays. Boras didn't dismiss the possibility, but insisted that his client has drawn interest from other clubs. Of course, we wouldn't expect him to say anything less. The 33-year-old first baseman batted .225/.357/.462 with 28 home runs, 80 RBI and an .819 OPS over 606 plate appearances with the Cubs last season. |

Fri Dec 9 2011 | 12:24 | Carlos Pena a possibility for Cardinals? |
Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that Carlos Pena is "in play as a possibility" for the Cardinals. |
It sounds like Heyman might be speculating rather than reporting that they have legitimate interest. Pena would make sense if the Cards are worried about Allen Craig's recovery from knee surgery, but if Craig returns healthy, they'll put him in right field and Lance Berkman at first base. Heyman notes that the Cards could also look at Jimmy Rollins and/or Carlos Beltran. He says there's "no word yet" on if they'll consider going after Prince Fielder. |

Wed Dec 7 2011 | 10:15 | Pena will not accept arbitration from Cubs |
MLB Network's Jon Heyman reports that Carlos Pena will not accept arbitration from the Cubs. |
Not a big surprise, as Pena is looking for a multi-year contract in free agency. The Cubs would receive a sandwich pick if signs with another team. The 33-year-old first baseman had an .819 OPS and 28 homers in 153 games this past season for the Cubs. |

Sun Nov 27 2011 | 18:42 | Pena unlikely to accept arbitration offer |
Per SI.com's Jon Heyman, Carlos Pena is unlikely to accept the Cubs' offer of arbitration. |
Pena "has a multi-year market after nice season on north side," according to Heyman. The slugger would stand to make a decent salary if he accepted the arbitration offer, but he'll look for a multi-year contract first. The 33-year-old first baseman had an .819 OPS and 28 homers in 153 games this past season for the Cubs. |

Carlos Pena was offered arbitration by the Cubs. |
Pena would stand to make a decent salary if he accepted the arbitration offer, but he'll look for a multi-year contract first on the free agent market. The 33-year-old first baseman had an .819 OPS and 28 homers in 153 games this past season for the Cubs. |

Sat Oct 15 2011 | 12:01 | Pena hoping to re-sign with Epstein, Cubs |
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Carlos Pena thinks the hiring of Theo Epstein bodes well for his chances to return next season. |
"No doubt,'' said Pena. "He is the type of person I definitely appreciate and a professional that I appreciate. Playing against him so many years, and playing for him briefly in 2006, I've got nothing but good things to say.'' Pena hit just .225 in his only season as the Cubs' first baseman but his 101 walks and .357 on-base percentage offer enough value that Chicago could consider bringing him back. His .486 career slugging and .838 OPS appear to fit the general mold that Epstein has targeted during his nine-year tenure with Boston. |

Sat Sep 17 2011 | 15:04 | Quade will keep playing Carlos Pena |
Cubs manager Mike Quade will keep starting Carlos Pena at first base while Pena tries to get to 30 home runs. |
He's at 28 right now. Bryan LaHair has been mashing the ball since being called up and is primarily a first baseman, but it sounds like he'll have to settle for part-time duty in the outfield. Of course, Pena could hit two homers in a hurry and then the Cubs could rest him. "You got a guy driving toward 30 home runs, who has been a huge part of this ballclub, both on the field and off the field," Quade said. "We need him in the lineup to win ballgames, and he's been a big part of that this year." |

Wed Sep 14 2011 | 22:08 | Carlos Pena notches 77th RBI |
Carlos Pena doubled home his 77th RBI in Wednesday's loss to the Reds. |
Pena has now doubled in three consecutive games, and is batting .324 with nine extra-base hits and nine RBI in the month of September. Hitting .233/.357/.474 on the season, Pena is apparently a good bet to return to the Cubs in 2012. |

Mon Sep 12 2011 | 01:44 | Carlos Pena triples, doubles in victory |
Carlos Pena had a triple, a double and a go-ahead infield single in the top of the 11th as the Cubs beat the Mets 10-6 on Sunday night. |
The single scored the first of six runs in the top of the 11th. Pena also knocked in a run with his triple and walked on the night. It's just the fourth time this season he's had a three-hit game. Of course, he's better known for the homers and the walks. |

Wed Sep 7 2011 | 23:26 | Pena doubles and homers in win |
Carlos Pena doubled, homered and drove in three runs in Chicago's win over the Reds on Wednesday. |
Pena's 26th home run of the season was his second of September. Batting .227/.355/.461 on the season, Pena is on track to finish with an OPS above .800 for the fourth time in five years. |

Thu Aug 25 2011 | 09:31 | Cubs unlikely to trade Pena to Yankees |
Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the "initial belief" is that the Cubs are unlikely to trade Carlos Pena to the Yankees. |
Patrick Mooney of CSNChicago.com reported Wednesday night that Pena was told by Cubs interim GM Randy Bush that they were pulling him off waivers, so we're pretty sure there's not much of a story left here. The Cubs will keep the 33-year-old slugger through the end of the season and have expressed interest in re-signing him this winter. |

Wed Aug 24 2011 | 23:40 | Pena told he will be pulled back from waivers |
Carlos Pena was told by the Cubs' front office that he will be pulled back from waivers. |
Pena was claimed Wednesday by the Yankees, but the Cubs have no interest in dealing the 33-year-old slugger. In fact, they're hoping to re-sign him this offseason. He's batting .223/.341/.449 with 23 homers and 67 RBI. |
