Fri Aug 7 202008:29Marlins' 6-1 start is reminiscent of the 1899 Perfectos
Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly was talking about this week’s doubleheader sweep at Baltimore that involved a parade of relievers, including several newcomers rescued from unemployment, and after naming three of them he drew a blank. “I’ve got to remember who all we used,” Mattingly said. “Who else pitched today? I don’t know.”For the Marlins, this season has been a bit of a blur. It was halted for eight days because of a coronavirus outbreak that sidelined more than half the team, and even now, four games into the resumption of play, there's cause for eye-rubbing.The Marlins are in first place in August, a first for the franchise. In fact, at 6-1 they have the best record in baseball, staging a one-year turnaround not seen since the 1899 St. Louis Perfectos.“I’m going to have to write a book after this,” Mattingly said. “You get tested, and you persevere.” Following a decade of sub-.500 seasons, the Marlins reported for spring training with something close to a swagger in Year 3 of... Mon Aug 3 202023:58Marlins' Jeter blames outbreak on 'false sense of security'
MIAMI (AP) — Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter says his players let up and paid a price.Jeter blames the team's COVID-19 outbreak on a collective false sense of security that made the Marlins lax about social distancing and wearing masks."The entire traveling party got a little too comfortable,” Jeter said Monday.Infected were 21 members of the traveling party, including at least 18 players. None is seriously ill, Jeter said, and he expects all to return this season. With more than half the team sidelined, Jeter said the Marlins still can be competitive when their season resumes Tuesday at Baltimore after a hiatus of more than a week.Following an MLB investigation, Jeter said, it's impossible to know where the first Marlins player became infected or how the coronavirus reached the clubhouse. Sat Aug 1 202015:07Column: Let's make baseball weirder with even more new rules
The stat geeks are all excited, even if no one else seems to be. They’ve spent the first days of the baseball season analyzing a bunch of new numbers that show the possibilities — and probabilities — of runners scoring after being put on second base to open extra innings. What they’ve found is interesting enough, though the sample size is small. Still, deciding whether to bunt or not with the first batter has at least introduced a bit of strategy into a game that in recent times has seemed intent on eliminating any deep thoughts.Assuming the pandemic doesn't cause the season to come to a crashing close — a big assumption right now — they’ll also soon be able to dive into the seven-inning doubleheaders and come up with numbers that show the proper way to handle pitchers. And they’ll study what needs to be done to make the new playoffs, though with 16 teams that’s easy enough even for those of us who weren’t paying much attention in math class. But why stop there? Like it or not we have a weird... [More]
