Hill will start at second base and bat second Tuesday against the Giants.
Hill has a 14-for-30 career mark (five extra-base hits) against Ryan Vogelsong, Tuesday's starter for San Francisco, so it makes sense manager Chip Hale would give him the nod over Chris Owings. The 33-year-old Hill has now been in the starting for the Diamondbacks' first two games but is expected to be a bench player.
Tue Apr 7 201510:20Aaron Hill: Starts On Opening Day With A Couple Of Hits
Hill got the start at third base on Opening Day with lefty Madison Bumgarner on the mound and went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Hill is expected to back up at second and third base and should find himself on the bench Tuesday. The veteran could also be moved in a trade by the Diamondbacks at some point if their young players acquit themselves well.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale is toying with the idea of starting Hill at third base for the Opening Day start against Madison Bumgarner and the Giants, the Arizona Republic reports.
Hill is going to be a utility infielder at second and third base, perhaps even shortstop, and the notion here is that Hale doesn't want Jake Lamb facing Bumgarner. Complicating matters is that Nick Ahmed got hit by a pitch on the hip and had to leave over the weekend.
Fri Apr 3 201518:16Aaron Hill: Slated For Bench Role
Hill will open the year in a bench role, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
Chris Owings and Nick Ahmed will start the year at second base and shortstop, respectively. Hill's struggles last season -- he limped to a career-worst .654 OPS in 133 games -- carried over to spring ball, with the 33-year-old going just 10-for-53 (.189 average) with one extra-base hit (a double) and 10 strikeouts. It's always possible Hill could work his way back into a starting job, if Ahmed or Owings struggle for a prolonged stretch.

Hill is 4-for-13 with a pair of RBI (1:2 BB:K) through five games this spring.
He's the favorite to handle the Opening Day nod at second base for the Diamondbacks, while Chris Owings (shoulder) is likely to end up at short. Hill played through a wrist injury last season, which may have been a big factor in his decline in 2014. Just one season removed from a .291/.356/.462 line in 2013, Hill may offer up late-round value on draft day.

Hill is competing to serve as the Diamondbacks' starting second baseman during spring training, Fox Sports Arizona reports. "The best guy plays every day," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "If Aaron Hill comes in and he is back to Aaron Hill that his baseball card says on the back . . . If he's the best guy at that position, he'll be our second baseman."
Last season, Hill played through a wrist injury that led to a significant drop in his OPS. In addition to being healthy as spring training has started, Hill shed five pounds during an offseason workout regimen this winter. Defensively, his skills have also shown signs of tarnish, but it's expected that the Diamondbacks will be more inclined to shift their defenders under new manager Chip Hale, which may help slow that decline. At a significantly reduced price, Hill offers some value given his potential to bounce back assuming better health in 2015.

Hill (finger) appears to be atop the depth chart at second base for the Diamondbacks following the offseason trade of Didi Gregorius, the Arizona Republic reports.
Hill's OPS dropped by more than 150 points last season, as he struggled to hit for power and showed diminished plate discipline. Shoulder and finger injuries may have driven a significant portion of that regression, however, and there's reason to believe that the improvements to the Arizona lineup could enable him to be a source of value in the form of improved counting stats if he sticks as the team's everyday second baseman.
Sun Sep 28 201412:33Hill (finger) remains out of lineup Sunday against Cardinals
Hill (finger) remains out of the lineup Sunday against the Cardinals.
Hill hasn't been in the starting lineup since back on Sept. 18, and with the Diamondbacks well out of contention, they'll continue to rest the second baseman. Even when healthy, Hill was starting to lose playing time to the likes of Jake Lamb and Chris Owings, so his role with the organization in 2015 is currently a bit unclear.

Hill (finger) is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Cardinals.
Hill was hoping to play again this season after dislocating his pinky Monday, but he is running out of chances to do so.
Fri Sep 26 201418:42Aaron Hill: (Pinky) Will Play Friday
Hill (pinky) is out of the lineup Friday against the Cardinals.
Hill dislocated his pinky finger in Monday night's game but hopes to return before the season ends. He won't rejoin the lineup Friday, leaving Saturday and Sunday as his only opportunities left.
Tue Sep 23 201401:50Aaron Hill: Dislocated Pinkie Finger
Hill had his pinkie finger in a splint following Monday night's game.
Hill still hopes to play before the end of the season this weekend, but it seems pretty likely that he'll miss a couple of games at the very least.

Hill was forced to leave Monday's game after the tip of his right pinky finger was dislocated. He remains day-to-day.
Hill finished the game with two hits and a run scored on four at-bats. Considering the severity of the injury, it's possible that Hill may have to miss a portion of Arizona's final five games of the season.
Sat Sep 20 201412:40Hill not in lineup Saturday
Hill is not in the lineup Saturday.
Jake Lamb will once again man the hot corner, as Hill seems to be loosing his grip on playing time down the stretch. He has started just two of the last five games, and those chasing counting stats may want to look for a more consistent option.
Thu Sep 11 201412:59Hill out of lineup Thursday against Giants
Hill is out of the lineup Thursday against the Giants.
Thursday's absence will mark Hill's sixth in the team's last nine games. It's been a disappointing year for the 32-year-old, and the Diamondbacks seem intent on getting an extended look at Chris Owings at second base over the final weeks.
Sun Sep 7 201414:20Hill out of lineup Sunday against Dodgers
Hill is out of the lineup Sunday against the Dodgers.
Hill has made just two starts in the Diamondbacks' last five games, as manager Kirk Gibson continues to rest the veteran down the stretch, allowing the younger infielders to see additional reps. Chris Owings will man the keystone Sunday, with Jake Lamb taking over at the hot corner.
Fri Sep 5 201417:41Hill out of lineup Friday
Hill is out of the lineup Friday, SB Nation's Eric Stephen reports.
Hill may see his playing time dwindle down the stretch, as the Diamondbacks seem to like playing Chris Owings at second base with Didi Gregorius at shortstop and Jake Lamb at third base, leaving Hill as the occasional odd man out. This is the third time he's been out of the lineup over Arizona's last four games.
Wed Sep 3 201418:28Hill out of lineup Wednesday against Padres
Hill is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Padres.
The Diamondbacks have previously stated a desire to give Hill some rest down the stretch in order to give their younger middle infielders some at-bats, and it looks like that will be the case Wednesday. Chris Owings moves over from his usual post at shortstop to pick up some reps at the keystone.
Tue Sep 2 201418:06Hill out of lineup Tuesday against Padres
Hill is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Padres.
Hill will yield the start at second base to Cliff Pennington on Tuesday, who will bat second for the Diamondbacks. There will likely be a lot of fluidity at second and shortstop with the return of Chris Owings on Tuesday, but Hill should see a good chunk of starts at second throughout September.
Fri Aug 29 201417:55Hill not in lineup for Friday's game against Rockies
Hill is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Rockies.
Hill has had a rough August, hitting just .174, so manager Kirk Gibson decided to give him a night off following an oh-fer Thursday. Cliff Pennington will get the start at second base in Hill's place.
Fri Aug 22 201416:55Hill out of lineup Friday against Padres
Hill is out of the lineup Friday against the Padres.
The Diamondbacks have given Hill ample time to work through his season-long struggles, but he's hit just .161/.213/.232 this month and it seems his opportunities will be scaled back over the remainder of the season. He's set to sit Friday for the fourth time in 10 games, with Cliff Pennington filling in at second base.
