Sat Apr 23 201116:38Garcia to start Sunday
Freddy Garcia will start Sunday's game in Baltimore.
There was a question as to whether the Yankees would push Garcia back to keep Nova on normal rest, but Nova will pitch the second game of the White Sox series instead. Burnett and Colon will pitch the first and last game of the Sox series respectively.

Fri Apr 22 201119:37Yankees not sure on Sunday starter
Yankees manager Joe Girardi isn't sure who his starter for Sunday will be.
CC Sabathia will be pushed back to start Saturday, and we're guessing Saturday's scheduled starter, Freddy Garcia, will go Sunday. That would mean Ivan Nova would be pushed back. "We want to look at how it affects the whole schedule," Girardi said.

Sat Apr 16 201115:51Garcia solid in Yankees' debut Saturday
Freddy Garcia allowed just two hits over six scoreless innings in a 5-2 win over the Rangers on Saturday afternoon.
It was his first scoreless outing since September 19, 2006. Not bad for someone who hasn't made a start since spring training. Garcia was mostly throwing in the mid-80s, but threw 55 out of 84 pitches for strikes while striking out one and walking one. The veteran right-hander is not going to be a good source for strikeouts, but is worth owning in AL-only leagues right now.

Wed Apr 13 201119:29Freddy Garcia to make Yanks debut Saturday
Freddy Garcia will make his Yankees debut Saturday.
At least, he's slated to at the moment. Garcia has had his debut with the Bronx Bombers pushed back twice because of rain delays, and he hasn't started a game since March 29. He doesn't think he'll be rusty, though. "I don't think I'll have any problems," Garcia said. "I have to go there and make my pitch, that's it."

Wed Apr 6 201120:22Freddy Garcia skipped over
With Wednesday's rainout, A.J. Burnett will stay on turn to pitch Thursday, while Freddy Garcia will be pushed back.
The Yanks can just skip Garcia's turn and keep everyone else in line, so they'll take advantage of the opportunity and do just that. He'll likely make his regular season debut next Friday against the Rangers.

Wed Apr 6 201119:50Yankees-Twins postponed due to rain
Wednesday's game between the Yankees and Twins has been postponed due to rain.
The Yankees are likely to push Freddy Garcia back to Friday. The Twins will do the same with Carl Pavano.

Tue Mar 29 201116:28Yankees' Garcia allows one run in finale
Freddy Garcia allowed one run over 4 2/3 innings Tuesday in the Yankees' 2-1 win over the Tigers.
Brennan Boesch homered off him in the fourth, but that was the only damage the Tigers could do today. Garcia ends the spring with a a 4.91 ERA. He doesn't project as much of a fantasy starter, even with the Yankee offense supporting him. He just figures to give up too many homers in Yankee Stadium.

Sat Mar 26 201109:34Garcia wins No. 5 spot, Colon to bullpen
Freddy Garcia has been told he's the Yankees' No. 5 starter.
Even though he's been out-pitched by Bartolo Colon this spring, the Yankees feel Colon is better equipped to handle a starter's workload than Colon, who will pitch out of the bullpen. In all likelihood, we're still likely to see Colon starting some games at some point. Ivan Nova will be the Yankees' No. 4 starter.

Thu Mar 24 201104:13Garcia favored to win final rotation spot?
Despite the fact that Bartolo Colon is pitching much better than Freddy Garcia this spring, Yankees manager Joe Girardi hinted that Garcia is better suited to be the team's fifth starter.
Regarding Colon not pitching since 2009, Girardi said, "That's somewhat of a concern when you have a guy coming off injury who hasn't thrown a lot in the last two years. You have to project in your mind how many innings you feel they can give you." Garcia worked 157 innings last year and could be the more durable of the two competitors. The team will make a final announcement in the next few days.

Sun Mar 20 201110:47Freddy Garcia won't go to Triple-A
Freddy Garcia said he will not accept and assignment to Triple-A if he doesn't make the Yankees' Opening Day roster.
"If I don't make the team, what am I supposed to do in Triple-A?" Garcia said. "I'm 34 years old. I've been in the big leagues a long time. There's nothing to go to Triple-A and prove. It's either I make the team or not." With his second straight poor performance Saturday, Garcia likely fell to third in line behind Ivan Nova and Bartolo Colon in the competition for a spot at the end of the Yankees rotation. But, even though he has a 5.93 ERA, he's posted a 12/2 K/BB ratio, so not all has been bad. He's certainly not out of it yet, but GM Brian Cashman said the team would like to make a decision soon.

Wed Mar 9 201106:37Garcia keeps pace in roster battle
Freddy Garcia tossed three perfect innings against the Braves on Tuesday.
He runs his streak to five scoreless innings this spring, keeping pace with Bartolo Colon, Ivan Nova, and Sergio Mitre for the final two rotation spots. Thus far, manager Joe Girardi sees "no separation" among the four of them.

Thu Mar 3 201116:36Yankees' Garcia goes two scoreless
Freddy Garcia started and pitched two scoreless innings Thursday against the Rays in his spring debut.
If the season started today, the guess is that Garcia and Ivan Nova would round out the Yankee rotation. Garcia is probably the one pitcher in the competition that can afford a bad spring. After all, he finished with a 10.38 ERA in six exhibition starts last year.

Thu Feb 24 201112:06Freddy Garcia has leg up for rotation spot
Jon Heyman of SI.com writes that Freddy Garcia has "a leg up" for the fourth spot in the Yankees' rotation, but that competition for the fifth spot is "wide open."
Garcia, 34, logged more innings at the major league level last season than his competition, so he has the natural advantage on paper. Yankees manager Joe Girardi appears willing to give young pitchers like Andrew Brackman, Hector Noesi, David Phelps and Adam Warren a look during spring training, but the final spot in the rotation is likely to be filled by Ivan Nova, Bartolo Colon or Sergio Mitre. We doubt this rotation will be the same in August.

Mon Jan 31 201121:08Yanks ink Freddy Garcia to minor league deal
According to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com, the Yankees have signed Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract.
Not much of a surprise, given his comments earlier in the day. He will earn a $1.5 million salary if he makes the team and has a chance at an additional $3.6 million based on games started, topping out at 30 starts. Garcia, 34, posted a 4.64 ERA over 157 innings with the White Sox last season, his highest such total since the 2006 season. We like Garcia better than the recently-signed Bartolo Colon, but that isn't saying much. As of now, he'll compete with Colon, Ivan Nova and Sergio Mitre for one of the final two spots in the starting rotation.

Mon Jan 31 201115:51Garcia's preference is to pitch for Yankees
Freddy Garcia told a Venezuelan newspaper this weekend that his "preference" is to play for the Yankees in 2011.
"My preference is to be with the New York Yankees, and it's not unreasonable to have that in mind, because I've demonstrated that I can be useful," Garcia said. "A team like New York would be ideal for my age, [as would ] playing in a successful, media-heavy, demanding division. Without doubt it would be an inspiration." The White Sox are known to want him back, but if he's willing to take a discount and the Yankees think he might be useful, a deal could go down. The Yanks requested his medical records earlier this winter.

Thu Jan 27 201117:36White Sox haven't made offer to Garcia
White Sox general manager Ken Williams told Scott Merkin of MLB.com that the club has not made a formal offer to free agent right-hander Freddy Garcia.
Williams acknowledged that the club has talked with Garcia, but said that there haven't been any recent conversations. Still, this seems like a pretty good fit, given that Jake Peavy is a question mark for at least the first month of the season. The 34-year-old Garcia posted a 4.64 ERA over 28 starts with the Pale Hose last season.

Thu Jan 27 201112:52White Sox may re-sign Freddy Garcia
Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that the White Sox are considering re-signing free agent right-hander Freddy Garcia.
Garcia, 34, posted an unremarkable 4.64 ERA and 89/45 K/BB ratio over 157 innings last year in Chicago, but the righty could provide quality rotation insurance if Jake Peavy has a setback in his recovery from back surgery. The White Sox should be able to bring him back on a one-year contract with a low base salary, as long as some incentives are involved.

Mon Jan 17 201116:07Yanks and O's considering Freddy Garcia
According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Yankees and Orioles are considering free agent right-hander Freddy Garcia.
The Tigers were mentioned as a possibility earlier this month, but are out of the running after the addition of Brad Penny. Garcia, 34, posted a 4.64 ERA and 89/45 K/BB ratio over 28 starts with the White Sox last season, spanning 157 innings. We can't see him doing well in the AL East, but there aren't many options left in free agency.

Sat Jan 8 201100:10Reunion between Garcia and Tigers unlikely
MLB.com's Jason Beck is reporting that a reunion between Freddy Garcia and the Tigers is "possible, though unlikely at this point."
Garcia is getting feelers from a variety of teams, though Beck suggests the Tigers are looking at bringing in either Jeremy Bonderman or Brad Penny to compete with Armando Galarraga for their No. 5 starter job. Look for the 34-year-old Garcia to take a one-year incentive-laden deal.

Tue Dec 21 201017:49Report: Mets not talking to Freddy Garcia
According to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News, the Mets aren't currently engaged in talks with Freddy Garcia.
However, the Mets have spoken with his representatives and may renew their efforts if some of their other options fall through. Garcia, 34, tossed 157 innings with the White Sox last season, more than his previous three seasons combined. With his injury history and declining performance, he'll likely have to settle for an incentive-laden deal.
