Yankees and INF Jayson Nix avoided arbitration by agreeing to a contract.

No word yet on the exact terms, but it doesn't figure to be for much, as Nix was arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter. The 30-year-old batted .243/.306/.384 with four homers and a .690 OPS in 74 games with the Bombers this past season and will likely function as a backup infielder again next season.

With two homers already, Nix's roster spot should be safe upon Corey Patterson's return from the DL next week. Mike McCoy figures to be the odd man out then. Nix is far superior to Edwin Encarnacion defensively at third base, so the Jays will keep looking for ways to mix him in.

The 28-year-old has a .215 career batting average in the big leagues, so expectations aren't high, but his pop could play well in his new surroundings. With eligibility at second and third base in most formats, he could be a sneaky find in AL-only leagues.

The good news is that he appears to now be OK and has resumed playing. The Indians sent Nix to Puerto Rico in order for him to gain more experience playing third base, where he is a contender for a starting spot in 2011. He made 11 errors in 40 games at third base down the stretch, so he needs all the development time at the hot corner that he can get.
