Aviles provided all of the offense for the Indians Monday, going 1-for-2 with a 2-run home run.

Aviles earned the start at third base Monday and made the most of it. In limited action, the utility man has hit .257 with two home runs and six runs scored.

Aviles will start at third base and bat second Tuesday against the White Sox.

The 34-year-old Aviles had a tough day Sunday in the finale against Detroit (0-for-5), but he owns an 8-for-19 career mark against lefty Jose Quintana, Tuesday's starter for Chicago. It's Aviles' third straight start, and while he figures to see his playing time dip when Michael Brantley (back) returns, he should continue to see time around the diamond against left-handed pitching.

Aviles has been held out of action all week due to a sore right elbow but should be back Saturday. He's set to open the season as the team's primary utility infielder with Zach Walters starting the season on the DL.

Aviles has not appeared in a spring game since Friday, but it does not appear to be anything more serious than just slight fatigue. For now he should be considered day-to-day, but it's possible there could be a further update to his status if he remains off the field for an extended period of time.

The Indians exercised the $3.5 million club option on Aviles, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports.

The utility player will stay in Cleveland for a third season, offering depth at a bevy of positions. Last season he saw time at all three outfield spots as well as second base, third base and shortstop, which makes him much more valuable to Cleveland than to any fantasy team. He had five home runs and 14 steals with a .247 average in 374 plate appearances in 2014, and similar numbers should be expected in 2015.

The Indians are expected to exercise the $3.5 million team option on Aviles' contract for next season, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Aviles will likely fill a utility role for the Indians again next season. He saw action at six positions in 2014 and posted a .616 OPS over 113 games.

Aviles is out of the lineup Sunday against the Rays, MLB.com reports.

Aviles has essentially resumed an everyday role since returning from a concussion Sept. 11, but he'll get a breather in the season finale. If the 33-year-old fails to pick up an at-bat Sunday, he'll finish with a .247/.273/.343 line over 344 at-bats.

Aviles has passed his concussion tests and will be available to DH in Thursday's doubleheader against the Twins, Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

While Aviles is not in the lineup for Game 1, it sounds as though he will be available off the bench and should serve as the designated hitter against right-hander Ricky Nolaso in the nightcap. Aviles, who was cleared by the team as well as Major League Baseball, is 7-for-11 with a homer in his career against Nolasco.

Aviles (concussion) could return soon as soon as he's able to take live batting practice, MLB.com reports. "If you see him now, he looks like night and day. He feels it. He's starting to get antsy. He's pushing the trainers. That's all good signs," manager Terry Francona said.

Aviles is hitting just .245 on 97 games this year and won't have much of a role waiting for him when he is able to rejoin the lineup. He could be back by the weekend if he continues to progress well.

Though he won't go on the 7-day DL since it isn't necessary in September, Aviles will still be subjected to the league's concussion protocol. He initially passed his post-game concussion tests after he was removed Monday following a spell of dizziness, but as is common, his symptoms began to surface a couple days later. There's no concrete timetable for when Aviles might be available for the Indians, who have more than enough depth to get by without him, thanks to the reinforcements they called up earlier in the week.

He's got the whiplash symptoms, so we'll keep him around here [Tuesday] to let the doc look at him again and then kind of go from there."

Aviles could be sidelined for a few more days given his current progress. He's hitting .245 with five homers and 33 RBIs in 97 games.

Aviles was five category contributor Wednesday, hitting his fifth homer and stealing his 12th base of the season.

Aviles was 1-for-5 with a walk-off solo home run against Baltimore on Friday night.

If you're only going to collect one hit, make it count. He took Brian Matusz deep leading off the bottom of the 11th inning for his fourth home run of the season.

Aviles isn't in the lineup Wednesday at Cincinnati.

Prior to Wednesday's outing, Aviles received five consecutive starts (four in left field and one at shortstop) but only mustered three hits, three RBI, and three runs in 20 at-bats. In his stead, Nick Swisher (wrist) will return to action, covering left field and batting sixth in the order.

Aviles was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI in the Indians win over Texas on Friday night.

He was a solid contributor to the Indians' hit parade that banged out 16 hits and scored 12 runs in the contest. However, the outburst may help him garner more playing time. With Asdrubel Cabrera now in Washington, he is expected to split time at shortstop with young Jose Ramirez, but Ramirez is hitting just .188 so there is an opportunity for Aviles to force himself into the lineup more often.

Aviles figures to remain a bench option with Jose Ramirez getting most of the starts at shortstop following the trade of Asdrubal Caberera, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. "One of the reasons we were able to make a trade like this is because of our belief that Mike Aviles and Jose Ramirez are ready to step in and contribute at shortstop," said GM Chris Antonetti. "We've seen it for quite a while from Aviles and over the last week or so from Ramirez."

The Indians are confident Aviles could handle the starting duties but seem to be leaning to giving the nod to the prospect instead of the veteran Aviles. He'll probably see more playing time as a result of the trade but figures to take a back seat to Ramirez initially.
