3B Yunel Escobar replaces unsigned free agent David Freese at the position, and will get the first chance to establish himself as the Angels' lead-off hitter. Escobar, 33, compiled a .314 average and a .375 on-base percentage in 139 games for the Washington Nationals last year. Defensively, Escobar's .970 fielding percentage ranked second among the National League's third basemen. But Escobar provides little speed or power. The 10-year veteran has stolen no more than six bases nor hit more than 14 home runs in any single season. Since Escobar will become a free agent after the season, the Angels view him as a stopgap while 3B propsects Kaleb Cowart and Kyle Kubiza develop.

Escobar went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI in a 6-5 loss to the Orioles on Thursday.
The breakout season continues for Escobar, as he raise his average to .326 with this three-hit performance. A .360 BABIP has likely contributed to his friendly average, but it's still impressive nonetheless. The only gripe with Escoabar's season is that 133 of his 168 hits are singles and that he has just two steals. That simply doesn't do a while lot for roto owners, aside from help their average.

Escobar will start at third base as he usually does, but it appears Williams could pull him if he notices any issues, and he may simply decide to remove him from the game early at some point. Either way, don't necessarily expect Escobar to play a full nine innings Thursday even though he will be on the field for the first pitch.
