Wed Aug 21 201301:37Saunders gets tagged in loss to the A's
Joe Saunders was whipped for four runs on 10 hits and three walks over six innings in Tuesday's no-decision opposite the A's.
From the very outset of the game, Saunders wasn't fooling Oakland batters. In the first inning, he walked a pair and gave up two singles, a triple and two homers, accounting for four runs total. The left-hander remains 10-12 to go with a 4.91 ERA. After allowing five earned runs apiece in his last two July starts, Saunders has gone 1-2 with a 6.53 ERA over four August outings. AL-only owners should have Saunders inactive, if at all possible.

Thu Aug 15 201322:54Joe Saunders gives up five runs in loss
Joe Saunders surrendered five runs in 4 1/3 innings Thursday in a loss to the Rays.
The defense can't get much of the blame when the pitcher strikes one none and walks three. Saunders, though, doesn't stand much of a chance with the current group the Mariners are rolling out behind him. He's now 10-12 with a 4.86 ERA.

Sat Aug 10 201301:15Joe Saunders gives up nine runs in loss
Joe Saunders was lit up for nine runs -- four earned -- in 4 1/3 innings by the Brewers on Friday.
Two errors led to two unearned runs in the third and another helped the Brewers scored three runs in the fourth, though one of those runs was earned. When Saunders gave up a grand slam to Yuniesky Betancourt all four runs were earned. However, things might have worked out differently if his defense didn't cause him to throw all of those extra pitches the previous two frames.

Sun Aug 4 201318:23Saunders beats former team on Sunday
Joe Saunders allowed two runs on eight hits over six innings as the Mariners beat the Orioles on Sunday.
He struck out two and walked two. Baltimore reportedly pursued Saunders as a trade target last week, but pulled back when they acquired Bud Norris from the Astros. Sunday marked an atypical Saunders outing, decent but not stellar. He's been a feast-or-famine hurler this year, allowing one or no runs 10 times out of 23 starts and six or more runs on eight occasions. Saunders improves to 10-10 with a 4.58 ERA.

Wed Jul 31 201314:54Orioles heavily pursuing SP Saunders
The Orioles are "working hard on landing" Joe Saunders, according to ESPN's Jim Bowden.
The report refutes intel from the Baltimore Sun's Dan Connolly earlier in the day that stated Baltimore was not targeting Saunders. Baltimore desperately needs a starter and Saunders, even at 9-10 with a 4.65 ERA, might fit the bill. The Orioles are also aggressively pursuing Bud Norris.

Wed Jul 31 201313:21Report: Orioles not targeting SP Saunders
The Orioles are not targeting Joe Saunders at the moment, according to the Baltimore Sun's Dan Connolly.
The Orioles acquired Saunders last season and they're once again in the market for a starting pitcher, but a reunion doesn't appear likely. Saunders allowed six runs -- five earned -- over five innings in a loss to the Red Sox on Tuesday, dropping him to 9-10 with a 4.65 ERA this season.

Joe Saunders allowed six runs -- five earned -- over five innings in a loss to the Red Sox on Tuesday.
Saunders has given up six runs in two straight starts after winning his previous four. The southpaw gave up nine hits and a walk while striking out five in the outing, and he served up two home runs to Red Sox batters. He's 9-10 with a 4.65 ERA this season, and he'll face the Orioles at Camden Yard on Sunday.

Wed Jul 24 201318:59Joe Saunders allows six runs in loss
Joe Saunders surrendered six runs -- five earned -- in 4 2/3 innings Wednesday in a loss to the Indians.
It snapped his four-start winning streak. Saunders has been a feast-or-famine kind of guy this year; in 21 starts, he's allowed one or no runs 10 times and six or more runs on six occasions. Add it all up and it gives him a 4.48 ERA.

Sat Jul 20 201300:25Saunders allows 3 runs in win versus Astros
Joe Saunders allowed three runs on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings as the Mariners beat the Astros on Friday.
He struck out six and walked three in the 10-7 win. Mariners manager Eric Wedge was forced to send out Saunders for the first game of the second half because Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma started the final two contests prior to the All-Star break. Saunders (9-8) has allowed just five runs over his last four starts, dropping his ERA from 4.98 to 4.28. The veteran left-hander is on the trade block.

Sat Jul 13 201301:24Joe Saunders beats Angels for eighth win
Joe Saunders blanked the Angels for seven innings in a victory Friday night.
It was Saunders first win in three starts against his original organization, though he also pitched plenty well in the first two (3 R in 14 IP). He's won three straight starts to improve to 8-8 with a 4.24 ERA in the season.

Sun Jul 7 201315:57Saunders goes seven strong, M's beat Reds
Joe Saunders tossed seven innings of one-run ball Sunday in the Mariners' win over the Reds.
It was a strong effort against a very good offense from the 32-year-old lefty. Saunders scattered six hits and struck out two batters without allowing a walk. But he is 7-8 with a 4.51 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 107 2/3 innings this season and can't be considered fantasy-relevant.

Wed Jul 3 201300:03Joe Saunders dodges trouble vs. Rangers
Joe Saunders managed to escape relatively unscathed Tuesday, allowing two runs -- one earned -- across 6 2/3 frames in a 9-2 win over the Rangers.
Saunders walked one, hit a batter and served up 10 hits, but he was able to sidestep the potential landmines since they were all singles. The left-hander's Jekyll and Hyde season continues, as he's often pitched well but usually gets obliterated when he doesn't. He'll bring a 4.74 ERA and 1.46 WHIP into Cincy this weekend.

Fri Jun 28 201310:21Mariners have inquired about Joe Saunders
Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles have inquired about Joe Saunders, but so far the Mariners' asking price is "too high."
Saunders was good down the stretch last season for the O's, but, with a 4.98 ERA and 1.45 WHIP this season, it's hard to imagine him being much of an upgrade. Connolly also notes that the club has discussed Scott Feldman, Ricky Nolasco and Jake Peavy internally.

Wed Jun 26 201301:56Joe Saunders gets yanked in second
Joe Saunders lasted just 1 2/3 innings and gave up six runs Tuesday against the Pirates.
After going four straight starts without allowing a homer, Saunders have up three while getting just five outs tonight. He had been 4-2 with a 2.53 ERA and just three homers allowed in 46 1/3 innings at Safeco before getting bombed at home tonight. Since he was pitching well prior to this, he shouldn't be in any danger of losing his rotation spot, even with the Mariners in need of finding a place for Erasmo Ramirez.

Thu Jun 20 201300:54Joe Saunders takes loss in 1-0 game
Joe Saunders took a complete-game loss after giving up one run in eight innings against the Angels on Wednesday.
The lone run to score off him did so on a wild pitch. This makes five straight quality starts for Saunders, though he has a 2-2 record to show for it. Overall, he's 5-7 with a 4.48 ERA. Next up for him is a favorable home start against the Pirates.

Sat Jun 15 201301:22Joe Saunders earns victory over A's
Joe Saunders pitched seven innings of one-run ball Friday in the Mariners' 3-2 win over the A's.
Saunders improved to 5-6 and lowered his ERA to 4.80. It's the first time he's been under 5.00 since mid-April. Next up for Saunders is a road start against the Angels, followed by a home outing against the Pirates. We wouldn't want him active next week; he's 1-4 with a 7.58 ERA on the road this year.

Sat Jun 8 201319:04Saunders allows three runs in loss to Yankees
Joe Saunders allowed three runs over 6 1/3 innings as the Mariners fell to the Yankees on Saturday.
It was another decent start from the 31-year-old left-hander, who has now been steady in three straight outings. But he's just 4-6 with a 5.12 ERA and 1.47 WHIP, and is still too risky to be trusted in mixed leagues. Saunders will take on the A's next time out.

Tue Jun 4 201301:10Joe Saunders posts fourth win
Joe Saunders pitched well for the second straight start Monday, tossing 6 1/3 frames of one-run ball in a 4-2 victory over the White Sox.
He served up just five hits, walked one and recorded five punchouts. Saunders got into trouble on a few occasions, but the feeble White Sox offense was unable to capitalize. The southpaw has been the definition of hit-or-miss this season, allowing four or more runs on six occasions and two or fewer the other six times out. He'll get the Yankees this weekend.

Thu May 30 201301:32Joe Saunders holds Padres to one run
Joe Saunders limited the Padres to one run and four hits in seven innings Wednesday.
Saunders didn't factor into the decision after his nice night. It's the fourth time in 10 starts this season that he's allowed one or no runs. Unfortunately, he has just as many starts of allowing six or more runs, giving him a 5.57 ERA.

Sat May 25 201301:36Joe Saunders gives up six runs in loss
Joe Saunders fell to 3-5 after giving up six runs in five innings against the Rangers on Friday.
The Mariners had to know Saunders would give up more than his share of homers and hits after adding him to their rotation; the surprise is that he's already walked 22 batters in 57 2/3 innings. Last year, he walked a total of 39 in 174 2/3 innings. Saunders is at best a matchup guy in AL-only leagues. He'll be worth playing next week when he gets a road start in San Diego.
