Byrd is out of the lineup Sunday against the Cardinals, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Byrd will be replaced by Skip Schumaker after going 1-for-8 with three strikeouts over the first two games of the series, dropping his season line to a pathetic .143/.143/.167. Schumaker doesn't represent a viable everyday alternative to Byrd, but Brennan Boesch, who has shown a little more pop in his bat over his career, could push for further at-bats if Byrd fails to break out of his slump sooner or later.

Byrd went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Friday's loss to the Cardinals.

The Reds had hoped that they would get some approximation of what Byrd has done the last two seasons, but so far he's been awful, hitting only .132/.132/.158. So far he's been no improvement over the man he replaced, Ryan Ludwick.

Byrd is hitting .417 this spring, but said he isn't yet where he wants to be. "Not yet. I need to start driving the ball to right-center field and start seeing more sliders and more curveballs," Byrd said. "When I'm able to stay over the middle of the field consistently, I'll be good."

Byrd will likely hit fifth or sixth in the Reds lineup, depending on what the team decides to do with Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips. If Phillips hits towards the top of the order, he could drop to as low as seventh.

The Reds received $4 million in the deal along with Byrd in exchange for Ben Lively. Byrd is the most popular trade target on the Phillies' roster in early trade discussions, Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports.

The Phillies are rebuilding and shopping most of their veterans. Byrd, 37, hit 25 home runs this season, which is more than any free agent outfielder outside of Nelson Cruz. He is under contract for $8 million in 2015 with an $8 million vesting option for 2016 if he reaches 463 plate appearances next season.
