He could open the season as the backup catcher to Jonathan Lucroy, though the club is reportedly still open to an upgrade.

Nieves was placed on the on the temporary leave list in order to be with his wife, who gave birth to a baby girl Wednesday. When he returns, catching prospect Wilson Ramos will likely go back to the minors.
