CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians have been dealt a major blow at the worst time possible.Third baseman José Ramírez, whose hitting tear has aligned with Cleveland's surge in the standings, needs surgery on his broken right hand and will be sidelined indefinitely as the Indians try to catch Minnesota in the AL Central or capture an AL wild-card berth.Ramírez was placed on the injured list Sunday with a fractured hamate bone, an injury that typically takes more than a month to heal. He was removed from Saturday's game in the first inning after swinging at a pitch. Manager Terry Francona said the 26-year-old has been dealing with soreness in his right wrist for some time.Francona said Ramírez would fly to New York on Sunday and undergo surgery Monday. Mon Mar 11 201921:11Indians ace Kluber makes 1st spring start, faces Reds
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — The Cleveland Indians were waiting for the right time to turn Cory Kluber loose in spring inning.Kluber made his first Cactus League start Monday, pitching 3 2/3 innings against Cincinnati and giving up three runs and six hits, including a homer by Yasiel Puig.Indians manager Terry Francona wanted to limit the intensity for Kluber as he was building his pitch count in a controlled environment. The plan was for Kluber to pitch in intrasquad games and live batting practice to build to 50 pitches before launching him into game experience. The two-time Cy Young award said he kept under control."It is different from pitching on the back fields for sure," Kluber said. "You have the scoreboard and the fans that give you the extra little kick of adrenaline. That's the reason we, I don't want to say slow play it, but we wait until now to control the intensity a bit."The Indians have held Kluber out of games early in the spring since 2017, the year after Kluber pitched deep... Thu Feb 14 201917:31Injured All-Star SS Lindor arrives at Indians spring complex
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Injured shortstop Francisco Lindor arrived at the Cleveland Indians spring training complex Thursday, exactly six weeks before their season opener. The three-time All-Star strained his right calf while working out recently in Florida. The team said last week the injury would keep one of baseball's best all-around players out seven to nine weeks. He won't be on the field for the start of camp.Manager Terry Francona said that he's "betting on the under" of that timetable because the 25-year-old shortstop is in good shape and works hard.Francona said there are no plans to slide third baseman Carlos Santana to shortstop, even though he has played 109 games at that position. Among the options are Yu Chang, Mike Freeman and Max Moroff.Lindor avoided salary arbitration last month by agreeing to a $10.55 million contract for 2019.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/tag/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
