INF Jose Reyes (left rib cage) was a late scratch from the starting lineup Wednesday. Reyes was penciled in to play second base and bat leadoff but was replaced following batting practice. It would have been Reyes' first appearance in the leadoff spot since July 9. Fellow INF Wilmer Flores was also scratched with a left ribcage injury, which forced the Mets to start Asdrubal Cabrera at second base and give C Travis d'Arnaud his first professional start and appearance at third base. Mets manager Terry Collins said the club likely would recall at least one and maybe two infielders Thursday to safeguard itself against an extended absence for Reyes and/or Flores. Reyes is batting .223 with nine homers, 39 RBIs and a team-high 14 stolen bases in 113 games.

SS Jose Reyes continued his blast from the past week Saturday night, when he went 2-for-4 with a pair of triples in the Mets' 6-5 win over the Athletics. Reyes tripled in the second, when he was stranded at third, before delivering another triple in the sixth, when he scored on a single by C Travis d'Arnaud. The two-triple game was the ninth of Reyes' career, his first since he achieved the feat for the Miami Marlins on Sept. 7, 2012 and his first as a member of the Mets since May 29, 2011.The latter game stood as the Mets' most recent two-triple game prior to Saturday. The only player with more multi-triple games than Reyes since 1950 is Hall of Famer Willie Mays (10). Reyes also utilized his speed on Monday, when he recorded a Little League homer against the St. Louis Cardinals by doubling and racing home on a pair of errors, and Thursday, when he beat out a walk-off infield RBI single in a 3-2 win over the Cardinals. Reyes, who flew out as a pinch hitter Friday, is hitless in his last 16 at-bats dating back to Sunday and could lose more playing time to IF Wilmer Flores, who is hitting .368 since May 1 and drew his second straight start Saturday, when he went 1-for-4 with a solo homer. IF Jose Reyes (left ribcage) was a late scratch from the lineup Sunday, when the Mets fell to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, 12-5. Reyes said he tried convincing manager Terry Collins to let him play but that Collins wanted to exercise caution, especially given the injury-plagued nature of the Mets. Collins may have extra incentive to play it safe with Reyes, who missed three weeks with a left rib cage injury last season. The injury comes at an inopportune time for Reyes, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base on Saturday night and is 8-for-24 in his last six games, a stretch in which he's registered three multi-hit games while playing his preferred position, shortstop, in place of injured SS Asdrubal Cabrera. Reyes is batting .205 with three homers, 15 RBIs and a team-high five stolen bases this season.

The scoreboard displayed news of his feat and Reyes doffed his cap to the crowd following a warm ovation. Reyes is the eighth active player to reach 2,000 hits and the second to do so this season after Yankees DH Matt Holliday. His 1,398 hits with the Mets rank third in team history behind 3B David Wright and former IB Ed Kranepool. Reyes singled and stole second base in the third, walked in the fifth and flew out in the seventh before delivering his two-RBI hit in the eighth to give the Mets a 7-2 lead. Reyes had reported to camp expecting to fill a utility role for the Mets but became the starting third baseman when David Wright was lost to injury. Hot-hitting T.J. Rivera was moved from first to third when Lucas Duda came back from the DL.

Reyes entered as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning and drew a walk against Gonzalez. He remained in the game at third base and flew out in the eighth, which dropped his batting average this season to .095. 3B Jose Reyes continued to struggle Tuesday, when he went 1-for-4 at the plate and made a costly error in the eighth inning of the Mets' 6-2, 10-inning loss to the Phillies. Reyes, who switched to third base last year after spending most of his first 13 big league seasons at shortstop, helped the Phillies tie the game in the top of the eighth, when he dropped a potential inning-ending pop-up by SS Freddy Galvis. the error allowed C Cameron Rupp to advance from first to third and Rupp scored when PH Andres Blanco hit a ground-rule double. Reyes is having an even worse time at the plate, where he is batting .100 (5-for-50) with 14 strikeouts. Manager Terry Collins has already dropped Reyes from first in the order to seventh but said Tuesday night that Reyes "has earned the right to try and work his way out of it."
