Thu May 23 201311:05Mariners to demote struggling Jesus Montero
Ryan Divish of the Tacoma News Tribune reports that Jesus Montero will be demoted to the Triple-A level.
It had to be done. Montero has been a major disappointment this season for Seattle, batting .208/.264/.327 with three home runs and nine RBI in 29 games. He also had an ugly set of stats in 2012 and could be kept down on the farm for a while. Divish writes that the M's "may have finally taken a step back from the idea that Montero will be a catcher at the big league level" and will play him primarily at first base and DH in Triple-A. Jesus Sucre will be promoted to fill the roster vacancy.

Wed May 8 201316:26Jesus Montero homers in victory
Jesus Montero hit a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning of the Mariners' 2-1 win on Wednesday.
The homer off A.J. Burnett was his third of the year. Montero also today threw out a basestealer for the first time in 16 attempts this year. He's caught just 15 percent of would-be basestealers (13 of 86) over the course of his career.

Sun Apr 28 201300:35Jesus Montero hits two-run homer for Mariners
Jesus Montero went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer Saturday against the Angels.
Montero was responsible for the seventh homer surrendered by Joe Blanton this year. He's now homered twice in his last three games, which means he's probably due to start regaining some of the at-bats he's lost to Kelly Shoppach.

Wed Apr 17 201321:26M's to 'mix and match' at catcher for a while
Mariners manager Eric Wedge said he plans to "mix and match" at catcher for a while.
Jesus Montero is hitting .211 with just one extra-base hit so far and has struggled defensively, while Kelly Shoppach is batting .389 (7-for-18). "We're going to mix and match with that," Wedge said. "Hopefully, keep Shop going, but also help to get Jesus going. What I wanted to do was play him (Montero) a little more early on, and see where it goes from there. Also, the physical and mental demands, I've talked to you about all along, I have to be aware of. We pushed him a little bit early. We're backing off a little bit now." Montero still needs to be owned in mixed leagues, but he's no better than a second catcher right now until he rights the ship and earns his manager's trust.

Sat Mar 23 201317:02Jesus Montero leaves after being hit with bat
Jesus Montero left Saturday's game against the Indians after being hit in the head by the bat of Francisco Lindor.
There's no word yet as to the extent of the injury, but Montero was carted off the field. If it's just a welt, the 23-year-old should be fine by Opening Day. But Montero has had concussion issues before, so there's legitimate concern it might be something more. Stay tuned for updates on his status in the coming days.

Wed Sep 5 201201:38Jesus Montero has three hits in losing effort
Jesus Montero went 3-for-4 with an RBI in a losing effort against the Red Sox on Tuesday.
Montero has struggled to live up to the massive hype surrounding him this season, batting just .264 with 15 homers and 54 RBI. Still, he profiles as one of the finer young hitters in the league and should be treated as such in next spring's fantasy drafts.

Sun Jul 29 201202:22Montero's two-run blast powers M's to win
Jesus Montero's two-run homer powered the Mariners to a 4-3 victory over the Royals in Seattle on Saturday.
Montero finished the night 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI, and also walked in the game. While his .265 average has been slightly disappointing, it's important to remember that he's still just 22-years-old and in his first full season of MLB action. He has displayed decent pop in his right-handed bat though, launching 10 homers and driving home 40 in 86 games on the year.

Tue Jul 17 201223:38Montero spurs offensive surge in route of KC
Jesus Montero went 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored, a double and two RBI in Tuesday's 9-6 victory over the Royals.
Montero's bat has come alive quickly since he suffered a concussion on July 4. In four games, he has gone 6-for-15 with three walks. The 22-year-old is hitting just .253/.294/.384 with eight homers overall and probably shouldn't be used in mixed fantasy leagues unless the format allows two backstops. Having said that, Montero needs to be monitored because of the potent potential of his bat and his eligibility at catcher.

Fri Jun 29 201200:59Jesus Montero goes hitless as DH
Jesus Montero went 0-for-4 on Thursday and still has just one RBI in 87 at-bats this month.
Montero was at his best while Miguel Olivo was hurt and he got to do more catching. He's hitting just .203 with two homers in 143 at-bats as a DH this year, compared to .322 with six homers in 118 at-bats as a catcher. The deeper we get into the season with splits that large, the more it suggests it's not a fluke and that Montero really is a better hitter when he's playing the field.
