Tue Jul 17 201219:20Micah Owings to have elbow surgery
Micah Owings will have surgery to "clean out" his right elbow.
It's good that he doesn't need Tommy John surgery, but a scope will still almost surely cost him the remainder of the season. It will be interesting to see if Owings sticks to his plan next year of trying to become a pitcher/hitter combo.

Sun Jul 8 201208:31Micah Owings converting to hitter
Micah Owings says that while he's "not giving pitching up," in the future he plans to be "a position player first and a pitcher second."
"I really want to see what I can do. I have an idea," Owings said. "I think it would maybe take some creativity for a team to accept it. But if it worked, it might create an entirely new position in baseball ... a position that would give a team an extra player." Owings' forearm injury won't allow him to pitch anymore this season, but he will play first base and left field and also DH for Triple-A Tucson starting next week. He could conceivably make it back up as a September call-up.

Fri Jun 8 201219:29Owings playing first base for Tuscon
Micah Owings, who's rehabbing a forearm injury at Triple-A Tuscon, is playing first base and hitting sixth on Friday.
Probably nothing to read too seriously into here, but Owings has always been an accomplished hitter. For his major league career he slashes .283/.310/.502 with nine homers and 35 RBI over 205 at-bats.

Wed Apr 11 201205:01Owings handed loss by former team
Micah Owings took the loss on Tuesday, surrendering two runs on two hits in two innings of work against the Diamondbacks.
After pitching a scoreless 10th inning, Owings hit the leadoff batter in the 11th and then gave up the eventual game-winning two-run homer. He looked masterful in 3 1/3 shutout frames last Friday. This degree of inconsistency has plagued the 29-year-old for most of his major league career. The question is whether his career year in 2011 was a fluke or the start of new trend.

Mon Mar 5 201219:28Owings rocked in spring debut
Making his exhibition debut for the Padres, Micah Owings allowed two runs on three hits and two walks in just one inning of Monday's loss to the Mariners.
Not a good start for someone looking to nail-down a spot at the backend of the Padres' rotation. Owings posted a 3.57 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 63 innings for the Diamondbacks last season. He made 33 appearances, though only four of them were starts.

Fri Feb 3 201209:55Micah Owings will compete for rotation spot
The Padres will give the newly signed Micah Owings a chance to compete for the final spot in the rotation.
He's unlikely to get it, as Dustin Moseley is the clear favorite as long as he's healthy. Anthony Bass will be the third contender. Owings' ability with the bat makes him an ideal long reliever, though, as he can work multiple relief innings while saving the Padres from having to use a pinch-hitter. The 29-year-old right-hander posted a 3.57 ERA and 44/23 K/BB ratio over 63 innings last season for the D'Backs.

Wed Feb 1 201215:43Padres ink RHP Micah Owings to minors deal
Padres signed RHP Micah Owings to a minor league contract.
Owings also gets a spring training invite. The 29-year-old right-hander was non-tendered by the Diamondbacks in December after posting a 3.57 ERA and 44/23 K/BB ratio over 63 innings last season. He'll try to win a spot in San Diego's bullpen. Perhaps his ability with the bat will give him the edge for a roster spot.

Owings was due just over $1 million in his first year of arbitration. Though he was non-tendered, the Diamondbacks are still interested in bringing him back at a lesser salary. Sun Jul 31 201102:57Micah Owings moves to 5-0
Micah Owings improved to 5-0 despite giving up four runs in five innings Saturday against the Dodgers.
That's probably not going to be a good enough outing to keep him in the rotation. The Diamondbacks didn't announce it initially, but either Owings or Josh Collmenter is going to the bullpen to make room for Jason Marquis.

Sun Jul 24 201119:47Owings goes five strong to get win
Micah Owings tossed five innings of shutout ball to earn a win over the Rockies Sunday.
Owings got the nod to replace the demoted Barry Enright in the rotation and impressed. Despite not being stretched out, Owings allowed just two hits while striking out two and walking three. He threw just 61 pitches before Zach Duke came on and threw four shutout innings of his own. While neither are fantasy options, today is certainly encouraging for the Diamondbacks.

Fri Jul 22 201118:49Owings to start Sunday vs. Rockies
Diamondbacks manager Micah Owings announced that Micah Owings will start Sunday against the Rockies.
He'll replace Barry Enright in the starting rotation, at least for one start. Owings has a 2.76 ERA and 21/9 K/BB ratio over 29 1/3 innings this season. While he's been effective as a long man, he's not a recommended fantasy option.
