RHP Alex Colome did not earn a save Monday, which would have been impossible since the Rays lost -- 5-2 to Seattle. It prevented Colome from establishing a team mark for consecutive games with a save. Colome and former Ray Rafael Soriano have both gotten saves in four consecutive games, a feat that Colome matched in Sunday's win over the Angels.

RHP Alex Colome earned his ninth save in Sunday's 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels. Colome pitched a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout for his second successive save of the three-game series. Colome and two other pitchers are one behind the American League's co-leaders in saves, Chicago White Sox RHP David Robertson and Texas Rangers RHP Shawn Tolleson.

RHP Alex Colome posted his eighth save of the season on Saturday night in a 4-2 win over the Angels. Colome faced just three batters, struck out one, allowed one hit and induced a double play to lower his ERA from 2.45 to 2.25.

RHP Alex Colome has been superb as the Rays' closer, getting his fifth save Tuesday and dropping his ERA to 1.08. The four Rays relievers in Tuesday's game all have season ERAs of 1.50 or better.

RHP Alex Colome continues to be the Rays' closer while Brad Boxberger is on the DL. On Monday, he recorded his fourth save, even with a single out. The Rays used three pitchers for one out each in the ninth, but the matchups worked right in a close Rays win.

RHP Alex Colome missed a save opportunity due to Evan Longoria's home run, but pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, getting a strikeout and a leaping catch from RF Steven Souza to seal the win. The Rays haven't had a save situation yet in their seven games, but it looks to be a job Colome will be involved in when those opportunities arrive.

RHP Alex Colome had a scare in the ninth inning, getting out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam. He pitched two innings for the win, holding the Jays scoreless despite giving up three hits. He will play a key role in the Rays' bullpen, especially until closer Brad Boxberger is back from surgery in another month or more.
Fri Mar 18 201613:28Rays closer Boxberger out eight weeks
Tampa Bay Rays closer Brad Boxberger, who led the American League with 41 saves last season, will miss at least eight weeks after undergoing abdominal muscle surgery.Manager Kevin Cash made the announcement Friday at spring training in Port Charlotte, Fla., after the right-hander had the operation in Philadelphia on Thursday to repair a torn abdominal abductor muscle. Cash said the team will have a better idea when Boxberger can return after the first four weeks of recovery."Obviously it's a blow, because we know he's so valuable," Cash said.Cash said Boxberger began experiencing some discomfort while throwing off the mound this spring."It was very unique that it wasn't really causing pain," Cash said. "Had we not got it fixed, then it nags for a long time. Box was in good spirits, and (it was) a very successful procedure."The 27-year-old Boxberger had 41 saves in 47 opportunities last year, with a 4-10 record and 3.71 ERA in 63 innings.Cash said the Rays will not designate a closer while... Colome (7-5) surrendered a hit and struck out two in two-thirds of an inning in Tuesday's 4-2 victory over the Marlins.
Colome technically also blew his fifth save of the season after his eighth-inning wild pitch moved Christian Yelich to second, and the single he subsequently yielded to Martin Prado plated him to tie the score at 2-2. The 26-year-old did record back-to-back whiffs to close out the inning, and then was bailed out by Asdrubal Cabrera's two-run blast in the bottom half of the frame. Colome has provided generally solid relief work for the Rays since moving to the bullpen in early July, lowering his ERA from 4.79 to the current figure of 3.98 in the process. He has been particularly stingy with the long ball, with the last homer he gave up having come in a starting role on June 16 versus the Nationals.

Colome is unlikely to pitch more multi-inning stints after Thursday's two-inning appearance, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
The bigger significance to this might be that Colome could be next in line to close if Brad Boxberger goes down. Jake McGee (knee) probably isn't coming back until the final week of the season, if at all, Kevin Jepsen was traded, and Steve Geltz has a 5.25 ERA since the start of July. If the Rays are keeping Colome as a single-inning set-up man, they're probably high on him as a late-inning reliever.

Colome threw three innings of scoreless relief in Sunday's loss to the Rangers, allowing two hits and striking out one.
Colome has enjoyed better results since moving to the bullpen to make rotation room for Jake Odorizzi, registering a 2.04 ERA as a middle reliever compared to a 4.70 mark as a starter. Curiously, while he's allowing a .292 batting average against in that span, he's also allowed only one extra-base hit in 17.2 innings.

Colome appeared again out of the bullpen Thursday, giving up a run and four hits in one inning.
It could be good news/bad news for Colome in a move to the bullpen, as he likely no longer faces demotion to Triple-A Durham when Jake Odorizzi returns from the DL. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times speculates the likely odd man out is now Andrew Bellatti or a postion player. Colome's value is severely limited now though, as he figures to be a mop-up man in the Tampa Bay bullpen.

Colome is not scheduled to start either game of Tuesday's doubleheader.
The Rays and Royals were rained out Monday night and will play a day/night doubleheader Tuesday. Colome will apparently have his turn skipped, as the Rays will go with Matt Moore in the early game and Matt Andriese in the nightcap.

Monday's matchup between the Rays and Royals has been postponed due to weather, Blair Kerkhoff of the Kansas City Star reports. The teams will play a split double-header Tuesday.
With the doubleheader Tuesday, Colome figures to simply have his start moved back a day, though the team is yet to officially say as much.

Colome figures to get one more start before possibly getting bumped from the Rays' rotation when Jake Odorizzi is activated, the Tampa Bay Times' Roger Mooney reports.
Odorizzi is reportedly going to return for the series against the Astros next weekend, and it seems logical that he will take the ball July 11, bumping Colome from the rotation. Colome has a 4.70 ERA and 1.41 WHIP so he has not done much during his audition to stake a claim to a rotation spot.

Colome (3-4) allowed five runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out three in Wednesday's loss to the Indians.
Colome failed to get a win for the eighth straight start, all Tampa Bay losses. The 26-year-old will lose his rotation spot to Jake Odorizzi, who will return to the mound Monday at Kansas City.

Colome is lined up to lose his rotation spot to the returning Jake Odorizzi on July 6, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Colome's 4.50 ERA, 1.419 WHIP, and 1.78 K/BB ratio meant his fantasy value was negligible, but Odorizzi taking his rotation spot would wipe out what's left. A conversion to reliever wouldn't bear much fruit given how crowded the Rays' bullpen is at the top and a move to the minors wouldn't likely be reversed except for another starter injury or occasional spot start.

Colome issued five walks but was able to limit the damage in a no-decision against the Red Sox on Friday. He allowed three runs on four hits while striking out two over six innings.
The five free passes set a new season high, and he's now gone more than five weeks without a win, but Colome has turned in back-to-back quality starts with a total of five hits allowed in those outings. Colome is scheduled to face Cleveland on Wednesday, lining him up to start twice during the week of July 6.

Colome (3-3) earned the no-decision on Sunday across seven scoreless innings, while allowing just two walks and striking out four against Cleveland.
Colome only gave up one hit in seven innings, but unfortunately he couldn't get any run support. He now holds an ERA of 4.50 with a 1.41 WHIP as he'll look to build on this in his next start.

Colome lasted just two innings in Tuesday's loss to the Nationals, as he gave up six runs on seven hits and three walks. He struck out two.
The second inning was the disaster for Colome, as he got touched up for a homer, a couple of bunt singles, and then lost his control and walked three batters. Colome had gone between five and six innings in all but one of his previous nine starts, but he's been shaky all year -- he has now given up 60 hits in just 49 innings.
