According to SI's Jon Heyman, the Yankees were the team that put a claim on the Cubs' Carlos Pena.
The Yanks are plenty familiar with Pena from his days as the Rays' starting first baseman and could look to make a deal if they view him as an upgrade at DH. Pena, 33, has tallied 23 home runs and 67 RBI in 124 games this year. He's on a one-year, $10 million contract with Chicago.

Mon Aug 22 201115:26Carlos Pena placed on waivers
Carlos Pena has been placed on waivers.
The Cubs did not trade the impending free agent slugger at July's non-waiver deadline and seem unlikely to work out a deal here in August. Unless the right team is able to claim him, Pena should remain in Chicago.

Sun Jul 31 201123:09Carlos Pena would like to remain a Cub
Carlos Pena would like to return to the Cubs next season.
The Cubs will go hard after Prince Fielder, but could turn to Pena if they lose out on the sweepstakes. Pena has hit .224/.338/.445 with 20 home runs and 51 RBI through 101 games this year while playing above-average defense. He may command a multi-year this offseason, and it remains to be seen if Chicago will be willing to make a longterm commitment.

Sat Jul 30 201120:43Report: Cubs won't trade Carlos Pena
The Cubs are informing teams that they will not trade Carlos Pena before the trade deadline, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney.
If true, we find this rather curious. Pena, who signed a one-year, $10 million contract over the winter, isn't of much use to the floundering Cubs at the moment when they could potentially reel in a prospect for him. The 33-year-old has hit .224/.338/.445 with 20 home runs and 51 RBI through 101 games this year. Re-upping Pena over the winter would obviously rule out the Cubs from going after impending marquee free agents Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder.

SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that Cubs first baseman Carlos Pena "will almost surely be moved."
The Diamondbacks have been craving consistent production at first base all season and could put together an offer. Pena, 33, has hit .221/.334/.445 with 20 home runs and 51 RBI through 97 games this year. He inked a one-year, $10 million free agent contract with Chicago over the winter.

Sun Jul 24 201109:46Cubs could bring Carlos Pena back next year
Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times writes that there is a "growing sense" that the Cubs are considering bringing back Carlos Pena for next season.
Pena, who signed a one-year, $10 million contract over the winter, could draw interest from teams at the trade deadline, and the Cubs will certainly listen. But, they could be inclined to hang on to him and re-sign him to a new deal. Re-upping with Pena would obviously rule out the Cubs in going after impending marquee free agents Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder.

Carlos Pena went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in Chicago's 6-1 win over the Phillies on Monday.
The three-hit night was just Pena's third in 92 games this season. However, he's now up to 20 home runs, and more or less providing the Cubs with what they should have expected when they signed him to a $10 million deal last offseason.

Carlos Pena has a .900 OPS since the start of May.
Pena also has eight home runs and 21 RBI in that span, which encompasses 31 games. He got off to an awful start this season in Chicago, but it's not too late for the 33-year-old slugger to begin earning his one-year, $10 million contract.

Wed May 4 201117:57Carlos Pena hits second homer in two days
Back in the lineup but batting eighth, Carlos Pena hit his second homer in two days Wednesday off the Dodgers' Ted Lilly.
Pena almost surely would have sat against the southpaw today if not for last night's homer, but he got the start and went deep again. The Cubs will hope it carries over into the weekend after their off day Thursday.

Wed May 4 201101:42Carlos Pena hits first homer in Cubs' victory
Carlos Pena hit his first homer as a Cub in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Dodgers.
Pena's homer was the Cubs' only run through eight innings. They scored three times in the ninth off Jonathan Broxton and Blake Hawksworth to break a tie and improve to 13-16 on the season. Pena entered the night hitting .157 with just one extra-base hit (a double) in 70 at-bats. The plan likely was for him to sit Wednesday against left-hander Ted Lilly, but maybe the homer will change that.

Tue May 3 201100:42Cubs' Pena goes hitless in loss
Carlos Pena went 0-for-4 on Monday, dropping his average to .157.
Pena was starting a second game in a row after driving in a run Sunday. We imagine he'll start Tuesday, too, since the alternative is three straight days off. The Cubs won't want to play him against Ted Lilly on Wednesday and they have an off day Thursday.
