Diamondbacks GM Dave Stewart said Tuesday that Pennington will be tendered a contract, Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com reports.
Eliminating any doubt as to Pennington's short-term future, Stewart said the 30-year-old will be offered arbitration for 2015. Pennington, a .248/.315/.350 career hitter at the highest level, doesn't get a whole lot of attention in fantasy circles, but his strong defense at the middle infield positions make him a valuable piece for major league teams.

Pennington hit a solo home run in a pinch hit appearance in the Diamondbacks' 7-4 loss to the Padres on Sunday.
On the day that he was placed on revocable waivers, Pennington delivered with his first home run since August 15 and second of the month. Although he has started the majority of his games in August, the pinch hit raised his average to .320 in the month.

Penning went 2-for-3 with a walk in the Diamondbacks' 3-2 loss to the Nationals on Wednesday.

Pennington went 3-for-4 with four runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's thrashing of the Rockies.
Slotted second in Saturday's lineup, Pennington benefited from big days by No. 3 and 4 hitters David Peralta and Mark Trumbo, who combined for five hits and nine RBI. Given Didi Gregorius' meager numbers at shortstop this season as well as the Diamondbacks' current vacancy at third base, Pennington could find his way into regular playing time down the stretch.

Pennington went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in the Diamondbacks' 4-3 loss to the Royals on Wednesday.
Pennington (hand) was activated from the DL on Wednesday and played for the first time since June. He was batting .243 before the injury, so the 2-for-5 performance is promising off the DL. He'll likely fight with Jordan Pacheco and Andy Marte at third base for the time being.

Pennington will start at third base and bat second in his return to the lineup Wednesday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
Pennington has made just two starts at third base since 2008, but he'll step in at the hot corner Wednesday and it seems he may push Jordan Pacheco and Andy Marte for playing time at the position. Although he batted just .243/.325/.324 in 33 games before suffering a broken hand in June, he can hit from both sides of the plate and is a fairly good defender.

Pennington will return his utility infield role with the Diamondbacks, but playing time may be hard to come by, with Didi Gregorius and Nick Ahmed both on the roster.

Cliff Pennington was a late scratch from Wednesday's lineup with a minor left thumb injury.
The thumb got hurt when Everth Cabrera slid into second base in the first inning of Tuesday's game. Pennington will take the day, but it doesn't sound like he'll miss any significant time. Chris Ownings was inserted into the lineup in Pennington's place on Wednesday.

Cliff Pennington went 2-for-7 with a go-ahead RBI single in a 5-4 win over the Mets in 15 innings on Thursday.
The Mets got game-tying home runs in both the 13th and 14th innings, but Pennington's RBI single off Scott Rice in the 15th put the Diamondbacks ahead for good. It was his first RBI since June 15. The 29-year-old infielder is batting just .230/.297/.290 in 61 games this season and should be ignored in most fantasy leagues.

Cliff Pennington had a three-run homer and an RBI double in a losing cause Wednesday against the Giants.
Pennington had a .205 average and three RBI this season before busting out tonight. He's in line to have his playing time reduced when Didi Gregorius returns from a concussion, but now that he's swinging better, he could get some playing time at second base.

Thu Apr 4 201303:52ARZ outlast StL in Chase Field's longest game
Cliff Pennington's single off Cardinals' reliever Fernando Salas scored Jason Kubel to send the Diamondbacks to a 10-9, 16th-inning victory Wednesday, the longest contest in Chase Field history.
The game-winner was Pennington's third hit of the game. He also walked twice in eight plate appearances Wednesday. The 28-year-old didn't enter the contest favored to play hero after going 0-for-8 at the dish over the first two games of the season. Pennington's got a great glove, but not much bat, entering Opening day a .249/.313/.356 career batter who limped to a .589 OPS in 2012.

Tue Jan 22 201321:53D'Backs, Cliff Pennington avoid arbitration
Diamondbacks avoided arbitration with SS Cliff Pennington by agreeing to a two-year, $5 million contract.
The deal buys out Pennington's first two arbitration years. Pennington offers solid defense at shortstop, he's just a .249/.313/.356 career hitter and sported an ugly .589 OPS last season. The 28-year-old will compete with Didi Gregorius for the starting job at short this spring.
