Tue Jan 23 201811:30AP source: Cavs' meeting centered on overall frustration
Their season and NBA title hopes slipping away, the Cleveland Cavaliers vented during a team meeting on Monday in hopes of clearing the air. After losing 10 of 14, Cleveland's players voiced their concerns and displeasure before practice, a person familiar with the meeting told The Associated Press while the team was in San Antonio preparing for a game. There was "frustration all around" during the meeting, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Tuesday because of the sensitive nature of the discussion. The person said there was a sense the session was "constructive" if the team is able to "move forward from it."Following an embarrassing 148-124 loss to Oklahoma City on Saturday, guards Dwyane Wade and Isaiah Thomas spoke about players needing to be more accountable and saying there was a lack of trust on defense. Forward Kyle Korver echoed those comments, adding it was time for players to look themselves in the mirror and ask what more each could do for the... [More]
Sun Jan 21 201816:20Status woe: Cavaliers not planning changes amid slump
INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) — As LeBron James and some teammates practiced free throws at a nearby basket, coach Tyronn Lue addressed questions about the troubling state of the Cavaliers while sitting in a high-backed, cushioned chair. While he was cool, Lue's seat has warmed up.With the Cavs mired in a bewildering midseason slump and less than 24 hours after a historically embarrassing loss to Oklahoma City, Lue said he has no immediate plans to change his starting lineup or rotations. Cleveland fans may be panicking, Lue's not nervous. At least not publicly. The Cavs are just 4-10 since Dec. 19, and in the past two weeks they've lost by 28 at Minnesota, 34 at Toronto and 24 to the Thunder, who scored 148 points and tied a record for the most points allowed by Cleveland in a regulation game — a mark that went unmatched since 1972.It's a mess, and it's a mystery the way James and the Cavs have collapsed. They've slipped in the past, but this slide feels much more ominous than in the previous three... [More]

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) — Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue isn't changing his starting lineup or rotations despite Cleveland's current troubling state.A day after the Cavs gave up 148 points — tying a franchise record that stood since 1972 — in an embarrassing loss to Oklahoma City, Lue said he's not making any major moves to snap his team from its mid-season doldrums. The Cavs have lost 10 of 14 and have been blown out three times in the past week.Lue decided not to show his players video on Sunday as the team practiced in advance of Tuesday's game in San Antonio. Lue explained his reasoning for not making any changes as the Cavs are the same team that won 13 straight and 18 of 19 earlier this season.Cavs forward Kyle Korver said the only way to fix things is "to look yourself in the mirror and say how can I help the team? It's really simple but it really is true."___More AP basketball: https://apnews.com/tag/NBAbasketball
Wed Jan 3 201804:02Hard to believe, but Pop was once unwanted _ by Spurs fans
Gregg Popovich was the coach nobody wanted. It's hard to fathom now, after five NBA championships as coach of the San Antonio Spurs and with him now alone in fifth place on the league's all-time victory list. But it's true — Popovich's decision to fire Bob Hill and make himself coach and general manager in December 1996 was horribly received at first, leaving even some of his own players baffled. The San Antonio Express-News took a poll after that season and found that 92 percent of Spurs fans wanted Popovich fired. As Popovich would suggest now (on politics, one of his favorite topics), sometimes voters get it wrong."The pressure is always there for any coach," Popovich said. "You've got to get the job done. If you don't, you're not there. If you do get it done, you get to stay."He said those words in 1997. He was right.Popovich now has 1,176 wins. He's 34 away from No. 4 Pat Riley, 45 shy of No. 3 Jerry Sloan, and should catch both next season. He would need 156 to catch No. 2 Lenny Wilkens,... [More]

F Kyle Korver (19 points) drained six of Cleveland's season-high 20 3-pointers in a 123-114 win over Atlanta. "It's a tried and true formula," Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer said. "You have a great player and you put 3-point shooting around him and it makes it tough. They had even more 3-point shooting tonight. LeBron (James) is obviously a great facilitator and a great passer (17 assists). They made the plays, not just him."
