Sat Jul 30 2011 | 13:10 | Ryan Theriot starts at 2B |
Ryan Theriot is starting at second base Saturday for the first time this season. |
It's clear the Cardinals are moving Theriot into more of a part-time role. They're in talks with the Dodgers about Rafael Furcal, but even if a trade can't be worked out between the two sides, Daniel Descalso is probably a safer bet for more playing time at shortstop down the stretch than Theriot. |

Ryan Theriot played second base Friday for the first time this season. |
It would seem to be as much a sign as anything that the Cardinals are prepping him for a backup role while they seek an upgrade at shortstop. "It was less for Ryan to have to think about," manager Tony La Russa said. "He's played second." Theriot has been in a massive slump at the plate, batting just .167/.189/.250 in July, though he did double in both of his plate appearances Friday. |

Sun May 1 2011 | 14:12 | Ryan Theriot still considered leadoff hitter |
Cardinals manager Tony La Russa still considers Ryan Theriot his leadoff hitter even though he hasn't been in the spot in his last two starts. |
Theriot batted seventh Friday and eighth Sunday, with a day off Saturday sandwiched in between. He's hitting at the bottom of the order Sunday because of his poor track record against Derek Lowe (4-for-20). It seems like Theriot will be at the top of the order most days, but La Russa will still be doing some mixing and matching. |
