T.J. McFarland will pitch in winter ball in Venezuela this offseason, with an eye towards earning a spot in the Orioles starting rotation in 2014.
The 24-year-old southpaw was a Rule 5 pick from the Indians, and spent the entire season with the O's, working primarily out of the bullpen. He held his own, posting a 4-1 record, 4.22 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 58/28 K/BB ratio over 74 2/3 innings. Tue May 21 201318:21McFarland, Arrieta options for Thursday
Orioles manager Buck Showalter said either T.J. McFarland or Jake Arrieta will start on Thursday in Toronto.
The O's decided to send down Jair Jurrjens in order to activate Miguel Gonzalez, so they'll need a fifth starter until Wei-Yin Chen (oblique) is ready. Arrieta is more stretched out since he's been used as a starter this season, but Showalter thinks McFarland would be able to throw 75-90 pitches. Neither pitcher would be worth streaming against the Blue Jays.
