Steve Clevenger was ejected from Thursday's game against the Nationals in the sixth inning after benches cleared.
Benches cleared after Lendy Castillo threw inside on Bryce Harper, apparently in retaliation to a confrontation between Nationals third base coach Bo Porter and Cubs bench coach Jamie Quirk which caused benches to clear in the previous inning. No punches were thrown in the scrum, but Clevenger shoved Michael Morse and took a swipe at Ian Desmond. Castillo remained in the game and struck out Harper.

Cubs activated C Steve Clevenger from the 15-day disabled list.
Clevenger was cleared to return after 6-for-13 (.462) with a homer and three RBI over five rehab games with Triple-A Iowa. He was hitting .500 (11-for-22) with five doubles and two RBI prior to landing on the DL late last month with an oblique strain. He could be a smart play in NL-only leagues while Geovany Soto and Welington Castillo are sidelined.

Sat May 19 201219:59Clevenger (oblique) close to rehab assignment
Steve Clevenger (oblique) is expected to begin a minor-league rehab assignment next week.
The assignment is expected to last only a week or less. Clevenger could return to the Cubs when they return from a two-series road trip next Monday. The Cubs' catching situation is a mess right now. Geovany Soto was placed on the disabled list Saturday and his backup, Wellington Castillo, is expected to miss a week with a sprained MCL. The Cubs promoted Blake Lalli Friday and dealt for Koyie Hill on Saturday. Hill is expected to get most of the playing time at catcher over the next week. When Clevenger is activated, Lalli will likely be sent back to the minors.
