Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun reports that Jeff Mathis will be part of the megadeal with the Marlins.
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel's Juan C. Rodriguez says the Marlins will also get pitching prospect Anthony DeSclafani. Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buerhle, Emilio Bonifacio and John Buck are headed to Toronto along with a reported $4 million in a deal that could be finalized later Tuesday.

Jeff Mathis (flu) served as a defensive replacement in Wednesday night's loss to the Yankees.
Mathis seems to be over the flu-like symptoms that began plaguing him over the weekend. He's batting .217/.250/.394 in 67 games this season as Toronto's backup catcher.

Sun Sep 16 201212:18Jeff Mathis out with the flu
Jeff Mathis was scratched from the Blue Jays' lineup Sunday due to the flu.
It's evidently going around the Jays' clubhouse, as Yunel Escobar is out Sunday with the flu, as well. J.P. Arencibia is now catching, while Yan Gomes enters the lineup at DH.

Thu Apr 19 201206:46Mathis homers in third start
Jeff Mathis was one of Toronto's few offensive bright spots on Wednesday, finishing 1-for-3 with a solo homer in a 12-2 loss to the Rays.
It was the backup's second start in three games over J.P. Arencibia, who is batting only 2-for-32 (.063). For his part, Mathis is playing out of his mind with a .444 batting average in three starts. His career batting average hovers around the Mendoza Line, so we don't see him sustaining this pace for much longer.

Mon Dec 12 201120:31Blue Jays, Mathis agree to one-year deal
Blue Jays and C Jeff Mathis avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.
Mathis, who was arbitration-eligible for the second time this winter, was acquired from the Angels earlier this month. The 27-year-old batted just .175/.225/.259 over 281 plate appearances this season, but is highly-regarded defensively. He'll serve as the primary backup to J.P. Arencibia in 2012.

Sat Dec 3 201112:27Blue Jays acquire Jeff Mathis from Angels
Blue Jays acquired C Jeff Mathis from the Angels for LHP Brad Mills.
Mathis, who turns 28 in March, obviously offers very little in the way of upside, but Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos apparently values his defensive contributions. He's due close to $2 million in arbitration this winter. A career .194 hitter, look for him to serve as the backup to J.P. Arencibia next season.

Thu Dec 1 201111:12Report: Rockies may try to sign Jeff Mathis
Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Rockies are expected to attempt to sign Jeff Mathis if he is non-tendered by the Angels.
Mathis already figured to be non-tendered, but it's virtual lock now that the Angels have acquired Chris Iannetta. The 28-year-old earned $1.7 million this season and simply isn't worth the raise he would see in arbitration. According to Renck, the Rockies could target Mathis as a backup to the newly-signed Ramon Hernandez so that prospect Wilin Rosario will have more time to work on his defense in the minor leagues.

Mon Oct 10 201121:45Mathis, Aybar headed to Taiwan
Angels catcher Jeff Mathis has been added to the roster of players heading to Taiwan for a series of games in early November.
Mathis joins Erick Aybar, Curtis Granderson, Robinson Cano, Dillon Gee, Ross Detwiler, Ivan Rodriguez, Michael Morse, and Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera. Two Taiwan major leaguers, Nationals right-hander Chien-Ming Wang and Dodgers left-hander Hong-Chih Kuo are expected to be part of the Tawain team that will play the MLB team in the 2011 All-Star Series.

Sun Sep 11 201100:58Jeff Mathis homers, doubles for Angels
Jeff Mathis had a two-run homer and a double Saturday in the win over the Angels.
He even walked in the contest. It was his first multihit game since July 28, and the homer was his first since June 19 and third of the year. Even though Mike Scioscia loves his defense, Mathis' offense has been so bad this year that he's seen his playing time reduced. He'll go back to starting regularly if he can put together a little hot streak.

Fri Aug 19 201120:58Jeff Mathis' playing time to be cut
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Jeff Mathis' playing time will be reduced going forward.
Finally, Scioscia is parking Mathis and his .176/.225/.254 batting line on the bench where it belongs. "As much as Jeff has been nonexistent on the offensive side, he's been very important on the defensive side," Scioscia said. "But it's tough to absorb no offense from one position." It's too bad the manager didn't figure this out about four years ago. But, better late than never, we suppose. Scioscia said playing time "will be contingent on how guys are playing," but it sound like Bobby Wilson and Hank Conger will be getting more shots.

Jeff Mathis went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the Angels' 4-1 win over the A's on Monday.

Mon May 16 201101:09Mathis finishes 0-for-3 in win
Jeff Mathis went 0-for-3 in the Angels' 5-4 loss to the Rangers on Sunday.
A perennial .200 hitter, Mathis is playing as expected with a .195 batting average. It's not good enough to earn an everyday starting job, but it's good enough to keep receiving a major league paycheck.

Fri Mar 25 201119:01Mathis keeps surprising spring going
Jeff Mathis kept up his surprisingly productive spring against the A's on Friday, going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.
The Angels' famously light-hitting catcher is now batting .375 with three home runs and eight RBI this spring. That's all good and well, but the career .199 hitter cannot be counted on as a fantasy option in all but the deepest of AL-only leagues this season.

Wed Mar 16 201119:51Jeff Mathis picks up three hits for Halos
Jeff Mathis went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in Wednesday's 10-8 win over the Diamondbacks.
He also drew a walk in another plate appearance. The three-hit day pumped Mathis' spring average up to .400 over 25 at-bats. The .199 career hitter is expected to receive most of the playing time behind the dish for the Angels this year, and although his performance this spring is encouraging, he's not someone you'll want to rely on in fantasy.

Wed Jan 12 201119:07Mathis' pre-arb. contract worth $1.7M
Jeff Mathis' one-year contract with the Angels is worth $1.7 million.
The two sides avoided arbitration Wednesday by agreeing to the deal, which awards Mathis a $400,000 raise over his 2010 salary despite his pitiful performance. The 27-year-old bated just .195 with a shockingly bad 497 OPS last season but will probably remain active throughout 2011.
