Thu Sep 9 201000:23Mathis hits game-winning walkoff sac fly
Jeff Mathis hit a walkoff sacrifice fly to center field in the 16th inning Wednesday, giving the Angels a 4-3 extra-innings victory.
It was a bit curious that the Angels subbed Mathis in for Mike Napoli, given that Nap had a home run earlier in the game, but it worked out for manager Mike Scioscia and Co. Mathis has 15 RBI in 175 at-bats this year. The Angels, though, have won only four of their last six contests.
Tue Aug 24 201001:30Angels' Mathis goes hitless in loss
Jeff Mathis made yet another start Monday and went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts before being removed for a pinch-hitter.
Not only is Mathis hitting just .196 now, but he's an incredible 50/4 K/BB ratio in 153 at-bats. Still, he's started five of the last six games anyway. That's how much manager Mike Scioscia thinks of his defense.

Thu Jun 17 201013:21Angels activate C Mathis from DL
Angels activated C Jeff Mathis from the 15-day disabled list.
As expected, Mathis will be with the team for the start of a three-game series with the Cubs on Friday. Mathis was batting .324/.351/.500 with one home run and three RBI over his first 34 at-bats this season before going on the DL with a broken wrist on April 20. Now that Mathis is back from the disabled list, look for Mike Napoli to be the everyday first baseman.
Tue Jun 15 201023:06Jeff Mathis on track to return this weekend
Angels manager Mike Scioscia indicated that Jeff Mathis (wrist, thumb) is on track to return from the disabled list this weekend against the Cubs.
"He played last night and felt really good," said Scioscia. "Depending on how he comes out of the night, he'll probably play a little tomorrow just to get in touch with playing three straight games. If he comes out of that well, he should be available to join us in Chicago." Mathis was sidelined from his rehab over the weekend after taking a ball off his right thumb last Friday.

Fri Jun 11 201023:49Mathis (wrist) suffers minor setback in rehab
Jeff Mathis (wrist) suffered a minor setback in his rehab after he took a pitch off his right thumb Thursday when attempting to block a ball in the dirt.
It's the same way he fractured his right wrist in April. Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Mathis has occasionally been hit with pitches on his hand when he forgets to hold it behind his glove. "You're not going to be perfect with it all the time," Scioscia said. "You try to be as consistent as you can. It's really a freak thing that it hit there a number of times." He's now unlikely to be activated for this weekend's series against the Dodgers.

Mon Jun 7 201023:26Mathis (wrist) could return from DL this week
Jeff Mathis (wrist) could be activated from the disabled list as soon as Saturday.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia originally estimated that Mathis would need "upwards of 10 days" on his rehab assignment, but it looks like he will return much sooner. Mathis is 2-for-12 (.167) over his first three minor league rehab games with Triple-A Salt Lake. As per their previous arrangement, Mathis should share playing time with Mike Napoli upon his return.

Thu Jun 3 201008:54Mathis (wrist) to begin rehab stint on Friday
Jeff Mathis (wrist) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said that Mathis could need "upwards of 10 days" on his rehab assignment. "He's going to need to catch six or seven games and you're not going to ask him to go out and catch seven straight days right off the bat," said Scioscia. "He needs to get stamina in his legs. He can DH in between (starts at catcher). Once he can catch back-to-back games and come out of that not feeling stiff then he'll be ready to go." He'll likely split playing time with the hot-hitting Mike Napoli upon his return.

Mon May 24 201023:13Mathis (wrist) resumes baseball activities
Jeff Mathis (wrist) resumed baseball activities on Monday.
"He got a full workout in," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "He threw to second base five times and looked good on his throws. He also worked on bunts. It's a first step, and it's an important first step. It's important for him to get through that hurdle, and he also took some swings in the cage with soft toss." It's a great first step, but Scioscia said there's no timetable for his return. Mathis has been on the disabled list since April 20 with a fractured right wrist.

Wed Apr 21 201000:26Mathis (wrist) to miss at least six weeks
Jeff Mathis is expected to miss at least six weeks after X-rays on his right wrist revealed a fracture on Tuesday.
Mathis was placed on the 15-day disabled list before Tuesday's game. It's a tough blow for the 27-year-old backstop, as he was batting .324 to begin the year and appeared to be Mike Scioscia's new everyday catcher. Now Mike Napoli will get a chance to reclaim the position, which is good news for fantasy owners who can find him readily available on the waiver wire in many leagues.

Mike Napoli figures to start in his absence, though Scioscia could decide to keep toying with us and play Bobby Wilson instead.

Tue Apr 6 201019:39Mathis starting over Napoli again on Tuesday
Jeff Mathis is behind the plate again on Tuesday night against the Twins.
Mike Napoli owners are already annoyed. Mathis slugged a solo homer in Monday's win over the Twins, so if he gets off to a hot start with the bat, we may have a legitimate timeshare on our hands.

Tue Apr 6 201001:17Angels' Mathis gets start, homers
Jeff Mathis started over Mike Napoli and homered Monday versus the Twins.
The last thing Napoli needs is for Mathis to actually start making a modest contribution offensively. Napoli drew the short straw tonight even though he hit .280/.368/.760 with six homers this spring. Mathis came in at .220/.292/.366.
