Tue Feb 21 201217:12Abreu would prefer trade over bench role
Bobby Abreu told Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportesLosAngeles.com that he would rather be traded than accept a bench role.
"I'm an everyday player, I can still be in the lineup of a major league team," said Abreu. "I will not be on the bench knowing I can play." Abreu's role will largely depend on the health of Kendrys Morales (ankle) and Mark Trumbo (foot), but with a crowded outfield, he looks like the odd man out right now. The Angels nearly found a match with the Yankees, but A.J. Burnett nixed the deal by using his no-trade clause. Abreu, who turns 38 next month, is owed $9 million this season.

Sun Feb 19 201208:48Bobby Abreu 'has been offered around'
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that Bobby Abreu "has been offered around" in trade talks.
The Angels have insisted publicly that they have no plans to trade the veteran, but they have a logjam in the outfield and at DH and surely wouldn't mind getting Abreu's $9 million salary off the books. They reportedly would have been willing to offer him to the Yankees in an A.J. Burnett deal, but Burnett could veto any trade to a West Coast team. Abreu batted just .253/.353/.365 with eight homers and 60 RBI in 2011.

Tue Feb 14 201200:06Abreu to be given chance to win playing time
Angels general manager Jerry DiPoto told Bobby Abreu during a phone call Sunday night that he will be given every opportunity this spring to win regular playing time.
"Bobby is an Angel," said DiPoto. "Right now, he fits on our 25-man roster, in our clubhouse, on our team. Where he is in eight weeks is predicated on how he's playing and everyone's health. We have some unknowns with the health of Kendrys and the progress of Mark, but we know Bobby is healthy. As I told him, if he swings the bat like he can, we're going to find a way to play him." Abreu, 37, has not requested a trade, but many suspect he would welcome a change of scenery. Of course, his $9 million salary for 2012 complicates matters.

Thu Feb 9 201222:24Angels looking to dump Bobby Abreu?
A source told ESPN's Jayson Stark that the Angels would trade Bobby Abreu for a "middling prospect."
There isn't going to be much playing time available to Abreu in Anaheim this year, especially with Kendrys Morales looking healthy in his early workouts. Which is why the Halos are prepared to move the 37-year-old outfielder and DH in a straight salary dump. Abreu is owed $9 million in 2012. He'll be a free agent in the fall.

Mon Dec 19 201116:21Report: Bobby Abreu would welcome trade
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com was told that Bobby Abreu would welcome a trade out of Anaheim.
The Angels recently signed Albert Pujols, creating a logjam among their potential options at first base, DH and the outfield. However, Rosenthal suspects they'll want to get a read on the recovery of Kendrys Morales before exploring a deal. Abreu, who turns 38 in January, is set to earn $9 million next season before hitting free agency. His production has slipped over the past two seasons and he's no longer a viable outfielder, so the Angels would likely have to absorb some of his salary to complete a deal. While Abreu would welcome a change of scenery, Rosenthal hears that he is not the type to demand a trade.

Fri Dec 9 201112:13Angels likely to unload Bobby Abreu?
Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times writes that Bobby Abreu will "probably" be the odd man out with the Angels' logjam at the first base/designated hitter positions.
The Angels have Albert Pujols, Kendry Morales, Mike Trumbo and Abreu available for first base and/or DH duty, so someone will have to go. The Angels are at least publicly saying they think Trumbo can handle third base or the outfield, though we have our doubts. DiGiovanna concedes that the Halos would "probably have to absorb" some of Abreu's $9 million salary for 2012 in order to deal him. The 37-year-old batted just .253/.353/.365 with eight homers and 60 RBI in 2011.

Sun Sep 4 201118:59Abreu finally hits his 7th homer
Bobby Abreu hit his first homer in 60 at-bats during Sunday's win over the Twins.
Abreu's last homer was the two-run shot off Mariano Rivera back on Aug. 9 in New York. In 140 at-bats since the All-Star break, he's hitting .200 with four homers and 17 RBI. Abreu will be 38 in March and is nearing the end of the line.

Tue Aug 9 201122:47Abreu socks a pair of homers in win over NYY
Bobby Abreu went 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs and three RBI in the Angels' 6-4 win over the Yankees on Tuesday.
His two-run ninth-inning homer off Mariano Rivera was the death blow to New York. It's been a rather tough go of it for Abreu this season and his power surge comes out of nowhere. He had gone hitless in six of his previous eight games, striking out at least once in each of those contests. The home runs represent a third of his total output this year, as he now has six total. The 37-year-old's career-high ground ball rate has sapped him of his power, though he does have 15 steals. He's hitting .255 with a .726 OPS. Luckily for him, Abreu's $9 million option for 2012 has already vested.

Sun Jul 31 201121:11Bobby Abreu's $9M option for 2012 vests
Bobby Abreu's 2012 option for $9 million has vested.
Abreu needed 1,100 plate appearances between 2010-2011 for the option to kick in. After coming to the plate 667 times in 2010, Abreu logged his 433rd trip on Sunday afternoon. While he's hit a reasonable .264/.380/.354 this year, he has just 4 HR (down from 20 in 2010) and can't play the field. He'll be an overpaid DH in 2012.

Sat Jul 16 201119:37Abreu drives in two in win over Athletics
Bobby Abreu went 2-for-5 with two RBI in a win over the Athletics in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.
Abreu bookended the victory with RBI singles in the first and ninth innings. This was his first multi-hit game since June 27. The 37-year-old continues to get on base with the best of them (.392 OBP) and has 13 stolen bases in 17 attempts, but a career-high ground ball rate has led to just three home runs.

Tue Jul 5 201122:27Bobby Abreu ejected
Bobby Abreu was ejected in the first inning of Tuesday's game against the Tigers for arguing a called third strike.
Pitch F/X shows that while the first called strike of the at-bat was out of the zone, the one that got Abreu tossed was actually a good call. It's the fifth ejection of the 16-year veteran's career.

Wed Jun 29 201121:45Abreu reaches base two more times
Bobby Abreu was the only player to reach base twice in the Angels' 1-0 win over the Nationals on Wednesday, going 1-for-2 with a run scored and walk.
Another solid effort from Abreu, who is now sporting a very healthy .289/.404/.382 triple slash through his first 335 plate appearances. His chances of another 20/20 season appear to be remote, but that's only a small complaint about an otherwise excellent campaign.

Wed Jun 22 201122:54Abreu helps Halos past Fish
Bobby Abreu went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a stolen base in the Angels' 6-5, 10-inning win over the Marlins on Wednesday.
He also scored two runs and drew a walk. Although Abreu's power has all but disappeared this season (he has just three home runs), he has remained extremely productive at age 37, and is the owner of a .292/.403/.390 triple slash through his first 72 games.

Thu Jun 9 201101:35Abreu nearly the hero in 10-inning loss
With the Angels trailing Tampa Bay 3-0 in the eighth inning on Wednesday evening, Bobby Abreu hit a bases-clearing double, but Los Angeles would still go on to lose 4-3 in 10 innings.
It was a huge hit for the Angels, but unfortunately their last of the evening. Abreu has been hot in June, batting .400 with five RBI in seven games.

Sat Jun 4 201123:46Bobby Abreu reaches four times
Bobby Abreu went 3-for-3 with a walk and a steal Saturday against the Yankees.
While he remains stuck on two homers, Abreu has 11 hits in his last four games, raising his average from .258 to .286. He's not one of the Angels' problems right now.

Tue May 31 201119:17Abreu not in Tuesday's lineup
Bobby Abreu is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Royals.
In his place? The weakest lineup the Angels have fielded this season. Alberto Callaspo will slide into the cleanup spot while Bobby Wilson is the designated hitter and Reggie Willits plays left field. It's a good night to be Jeff Francis.

Tue May 17 201102:51Bobby Abreu goes 0-for-5 in loss
After getting Sunday off, Bobby Abreu returned to the lineup on Monday and went 0-for-5 against the A's.
Abreu is down to .255 now, and he has just one homer through 41 games. An optimist would point to his 2009, nothing that he didn't hit his first homer until May 26 and still finishing with 15 for the year. Abreu is 37 now, though, and there's no guarantee he'll bounce back.

Sun May 1 201117:34Abreu has another nice day in 6-5 win
Bobby Abreu continued to heat up on Sunday, going 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, walk and two stolen bases in the Angels' 6-5 win over the Rays.
Abreu has now reached base 13 times in his past five starts. Although obviously not the player he once was, it appears that Abreu does indeed have a 14th (full) productive season in him.

Mon Apr 4 201103:10Abreu reaches base all seven times in loss
Bobby Abreu reached base all seven times in Sunday's extra-inning loss to the Royals, finishing 5-for-5 with two walks.
His third career five-hit performance included his first home run of the year. The veteran should continue to find success as the Angels' full-time DH.

Wed Mar 23 201119:18Bobby Abreu takes Matt Cain deep
Bobby Abreu went 1-for-3 with a walk and a three-run homer off Matt Cain in Wednesday's 8-0 win over the Giants.
The veteran has had a terrific spring, batting .368 with three longballs and 14 RBI. Abreu's average and RBI total took a big dip last season, something that's concerning given that he's now 37, but he's still capable of another 20/20 season.
