Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports that the Royals will recall Kelvin Herrera and Chris Getz from Triple-A Omaha prior to Friday's game.

They've already sent down Johnny Giavotella and Everett Teaford in corresponding moves. Herrera entered the season as a top setup man but ultimately flamed out and has been demoted twice. He got his act together at Omaha, throwing 7 1/3 scoreless inning with a 13/2 K/BB ratio in July, but Herrera is likely to be used in low-leverage situations for now.

His use in the eighth inning, coupled with his ineffectiveness in the appearance, should pour some cold water on the idea that he's a looming threat to Greg Holland as the Royals closer.

Although manager Ned Yost has said he's sticking with Holland, it's hard to overlook what Herrera has done this season. Holland may still have the title for the time being, but any more stumbles and Herrera is ready to pounce.

The youngster has a bright future in baseball, but it wasn't in the cards tonight. After hitting the first batter he faced, Herrera yielded a double, followed by a three-run homer with two outs. He likely will compete for a bullpen job next spring.
