Thu Jul 18 201318:28Kelvin Herrera will be recalled Friday
Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports that the Royals will recall Kelvin Herrera and Chris Getz from Triple-A Omaha prior to Friday's game.
They've already sent down Johnny Giavotella and Everett Teaford in corresponding moves. Herrera entered the season as a top setup man but ultimately flamed out and has been demoted twice. He got his act together at Omaha, throwing 7 1/3 scoreless inning with a 13/2 K/BB ratio in July, but Herrera is likely to be used in low-leverage situations for now.

Wed Jul 17 201312:33Royals considering calling up Kelvin Herrera
Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star was told by a club official that the Royals are considering calling up Kelvin Herrera in the next few days.
Herrera owns an ugly 5.20 ERA in 29 appearances with the Royals this season and has been demoted twice, but he has a 17/2 K/BB ratio over 11 2/3 scoreless innings in his last five appearances between Double- and Triple-A. The hard-throwing 23-year-old has a ton of talent, so the Royals are hoping that he has righted himself.

Tue Jun 18 201322:15Herrera blows up for fifth loss against Tribe
Kelvin Herrera took the loss on Tuesday, allowing three runs in just 1/3 of an inning against the Indians.
Herrera hadn't allowed a run since being recalled on June 5 but struggled mightily on Tuesday, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk. There was a point early in the season where Herrera looked like he might wrestle the closing job away from a struggling Greg Holland, but with Holland straightened out and Herrera's troubles that seems like a remote possibility anytime in 2013.

Royals optioned RHP Kelvin Herrera to Triple-A Omaha.
It wasn't too long ago that Herrera was threatening Greg Holland for the closer role, but he has struggled to keep the ball in the ballpark this season, surrendering eight home runs in just 20 1/3 innings. He'll attempt to straighten things out in the minors.

Tue Apr 16 201322:03Herrera serves up the longball on Tuesday
Kelvin Herrera allowed four runs, including three solo home runs, to the Braves on Tuesday.
It was Herrera's first hiccup of the season, and what a hiccup it was. Herrera was taken deep by Jason Heyward, Justin Upton and Dan Uggla in the eighth inning of a game that was tied when he entered. His use in the eighth inning, coupled with his ineffectiveness in the appearance, should pour some cold water on the idea that he's a looming threat to Greg Holland as the Royals closer.

Wed Apr 10 201323:27Herrera steps in, earns save against Twins
Kelvin Herrera earned his second save of the season in closing out the Royals' 3-0 win over the Twins on Wednesday.
Herrera subbed in for regular closer Greg Holland, who earned his second save on Tuesday. Although manager Ned Yost has said he's sticking with Holland, it's hard to overlook what Herrera has done this season. The 23-year-old has struck out 10 batters without allowing a run in 4 1/3 innings thus far, and he's a perfect 2-for-2 in save conversions. Holland may still have the title for the time being, but any more stumbles and Herrera is ready to pounce.

Sun Apr 7 201317:15Kelvin Herrera earns save, Royals beat Phils
Kelvin Herrera earned his first save of the season Sunday in the Royals' defeat of the Phillies.
Herrera entered the game to clean up a mess that closer Greg Holland helped create, which suggests that there may be a ninth-inning controversy brewing in Kansas City. Herrera has one of the hardest fastballs in the sport and posted an excellent 2.35 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 77/21 K/BB ratio across 84 1/3 innings last season. He can be an elite closer right now.

The youngster has a bright future in baseball, but it wasn't in the cards tonight. After hitting the first batter he faced, Herrera yielded a double, followed by a three-run homer with two outs. He likely will compete for a bullpen job next spring.
