Fri May 4 201818:26Tigers place Cabrera on DL with right hamstring strain
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera was so clearly frustrated when he hobbled off the field with a strained hamstring that manager Ron Gardenhire let him cool off a while before finally talking to him.Gardenhire was a bit worried about how Cabrera would react to the possibility of the disabled list."He understood," Gardenhire said. "I think he knows he's not going to be ready in the next three or four days. He gets it. We're all hoping it's quick."So, with Cabrera's blessing, the Tigers placed the two-time AL MVP on the DL before Friday night's game against the Kansas City Royals. They recalled catcher Grayson Greiner from Triple-A Toledo to fill a roster spot, but intend to use Victor Martinez at DH and John Hicks at first base while Cabrera is out."He was frustrated. Still is," Gardenhire said. "It's baseball. You're playing every day. He was healthy all through spring training. C/1B John Hicks along with RHP Buck Farmer were absolved Friday by Major League Baseball of any willful intent to hit home plate umpire Quinn Wolcott with a pitch Wednesday in a game at Cleveland. Hicks, expecting a slider, was crossed up by Farmer's fastball and it struck Wolcott on the left shoulder, knocking him to the ground. This happened right after C James McCann and manager Brad Ausmus were ejected for arguing balls and strikes. "Hey," Hicks said. "I just got in the game. When were Buck and I supposed to have planned this out?"

C John Hicks reiterated that he didn't intentionally allow a pitch to hit home plate umpire Quinn Wolcott during the team's 5-3 loss at Cleveland on Wednesday. Manager Brad Ausmus and catcher James McCann had just been ejected by Wolcott for arguing balls and strikes. Buck Farmer's fastball hit Wolcott when Hicks called for a slider with the bases loaded. "I've gotten a lot of grief from Indians fans," Hicks said. "The bases were loaded and it's petty to think we're trying to hit the umpire."

C John Hicks entered Wednesday's game in the third inning, after C James McCann was ejected from the game by home plate umpire Quinn Wolcott after McCann disputed a ball four call on OF Jay Bruce. Later in the inning, RHP Buck Farmer threw a fastball that Hicks reached for, but missed. The ball hit Wolcott in the left shoulder, knocking him on his back. After a brief delay, Wolcott remained in the game. "Hicks got crossed up on the pitch. He assumed it would be a slider away, and Farmer threw a fastball," manager Brad Ausmus said. "Plus, the bases were loaded. For anyone to imply that that was intentional, that's a lie. If one of our players tried to intentionally hurt an umpire, we would handle it, severely." Said Hicks: "Obviously it looked bad, coming right after (the ejections), but I got crossed up. That thought (that it was intentional) is ridiculous."

C/1B John Hicks has five hits in 14 at-bats, including two doubles and a homer, since being recalled from Triple-A Toledo on July 31. Hicks has bounced back and forth between Toledo and Detroit all season but seemingly has a secure spot now as the backup catcher with Alex Avila getting dealt at the trade deadline. He's batting .309 with four homers in 81 at-bats with the Tigers this season. "It's nice. This is where you want to be," he said. "I feel like I've done my part, done what they've asked me to do."
