Fri Mar 22 201316:11Sergio Santos strikes out side
Sergio Santos struck out the side in his inning against the Red Sox on Friday.
Santos walked one and threw two wild pitches, so he wasn't flawless. Now that Casey Janssen is back, Santos's chances of opening the season in the closer's role have likely diminished.

Sergio Santos surrendered a two-run homer in his inning of work against the Astros on Tuesday.
Santos pitched a perfect inning Saturday in his return from some triceps soreness, but he allowed a single and then a homer to Jason Castro today. He's left the door open for Casey Janssen to hold on to the closer's role in Toronto.

Sat Mar 16 201316:53Sergio Santos pitches perfect inning
Back from some triceps soreness, Sergio Santos pitched a perfect inning Saturday against the Orioles.
Santos also pitched in a minor league game Thursday. Despite the setback, he's still a possibility to open the season in the closer's role for Toronto. After all, Casey Janssen (shoulder) still hasn't made his first spring appearance.

Thu Mar 14 201323:24Sergio Santos appears in minor league game
Sergio Santos (triceps) threw 18 pitches in a minor league game Thursday with no issues.
He'll make his Grapefruit League debut Saturday before appearing in back-to-back outings at some point late next week. "I don't foresee anything why I shouldn't be ready for Opening Day," Santos said. "If Opening Day was next week, I feel like I would be ready. So from my standpoint, the way I see it now, I feel like I am 100 percent ready moving on from here." Casey Janssen (shoulder) is less sure of being ready for the opener, so Santos could see some save chances.

Sun Mar 10 201310:21Sergio Santos throws bullpen session
Sergio Santos (triceps) threw a bullpen session Sunday with no issues.
It's the first time he's thrown from the bump since being removed from a game last Sunday with soreness in his triceps. It's not clear when Santos will be ready for game action, but it shouldn't be long.

Thu Mar 7 201313:13Santos (triceps) to play catch Friday
Sergio Santos (triceps) is expected to play catch Friday.
Santos felt soreness in his triceps after an outing on Sunday, so he has taken things easy over the past couple of days. He actually wanted to play catch Thursday, but the Blue Jays nixed that idea. If all goes well, he could return to game action Tuesday.

Sergio Santos felt soreness in his triceps Sunday night after an outing against the Phillies.

Sun Mar 3 201316:34Sergio Santos gives up run to Phillies
Sergio Santos gave up his first run of the spring Sunday against the Phillies.
It would have been worse, except a heads-up Santos snuck in behind Yuniesky Betancourt rounding third on a hit and tagged him for the second out of the inning. While Santos seemed to be gaining ground in the closer competition with the still sidelined Casey Janssen, today's performance was a bit of a setback.

Fri Mar 1 201322:48Sergio Santos putting pressure on Janssen
With an impressive performance early on in the spring, Sergio Santos is gaining momentum in his attempt at reclaiming the Blue Jays' closer role from Casey Janssen.
Janssen entered the spring as the favorite to keep the job, but he has struggled to recover from minor offseason shoulder surgery. With the door now open, look for the hard-throwing Santos to reclaim the job that was rightfully his before going down with an injury of his own last season.

Sun Feb 24 201316:31Sergio Santos perfect versus Orioles
Sergio Santos needed just six pitches to throw a perfect inning Sunday versus the Orioles.
Santos was making his spring debut after shoulder problems limited him to six appearances last season. It sounds like he'll serve as Casey Janssen's setup man initially, but it'd be no surprise if he seizes the closer's role in Toronto at some point.

Sun Feb 10 201323:16Santos says he's ready for spring training
Sergio Santos (shoulder) confirmed he's ready for the start of spring training.
Santos is seven months removed from season-ending shoulder surgery and hasn't reported any setbacks in his offseason throwing program. While the Blue Jays still view him as their long-term closer, he'll open the season in a setup role for Casey Janssen, who posted a 2.54 ERA and 22 saves in 2012.

Mon Dec 31 201213:05Sergio Santos could have chance to be closer
Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star writes that Sergio Santos (shoulder) "is ready for spring training, with a chance, if healthy, to reclaim the closer's role."
It's hard to imagine the Jays will go with a guy coming off shoulder surgery given what Casey Janssen did this past season, but Griffin notes that Janssen isn't a "classic closer" and that general manager Alex Anthopoulos traded for Santos "believing he was the long-term solution as closer." Griffin considers the situation a "coin flip" at this time. If Santos does return healthy, he'll be a big boost to Toronto's bullpen, but we'd still give Janssen the leg up in the competition for saves.

Sun Jul 15 201211:14Santos to have season-ending shoulder surgery
Sergio Santos will undergo season-ending surgery to repair the labrum in his right shoulder.
Santos had continued pain in his most recent throwing session, convincing the Blue Jays that having an operation was the best course of action. The surgery will focus on the labrum, as Santos' rotator cuff is fine. The club is optimistic that he'll be ready to go for the start of spring training next season. Casey Janssen should now be locked into the team's closer role for the remainder of the season.

Sat Jul 7 201200:23Santos (shoulder) close to throwing from moun
Sergio Santos (shoulder) could get back on the mound this weekend or early next week.
Finally, some good news for Santos, who has made little progress since being placed on the disabled list in April with shoulder inflammation. The Blue Jays will see how he feels after the initial mound session before mapping out a plan moving forward. Casey Jannsen, who is 11-for-12 in save chances, will continue to serve as closer in the interim.

Wed Jun 27 201215:11Sergio Santos (shoulder) hasn't long tossed
Sergio Santos has been unable to take part in long toss due to continued shoulder soreness.
Santos was originally expected to miss two to four weeks, but he's been on the disabled list for two months now and hasn't made much progress. One troubling detail of the injury is that the pain isn't restricted to one area of his shoulder. There's no current timetable for his return, so Casey Janssen may end up keeping the closer gig for most of the summer.

Sergio Santos (shoulder) has resumed a throwing program.
Santos has been shut down since early June with renewed discomfort in his right shoulder. He remains without a timetable to start throwing from a mound, but it's at least a sign he's beginning to make progress. Santos has been on the DL since April 22 and is essentially starting from scratch in his rehab.

Mon Jun 11 201212:20Sergio Santos feels more shoulder discomfort
Sergio Santos felt renewed discomfort in his right shoulder after throwing a bullpen session last week.
"Because of that discomfort, which can be normal for a guy ramping back up, we've had to slow him down," Jays manager John Farrell said. Santos has been on the disabled list since April 22 and remains out indefinitely. Casey Janssen will continue to handle Toronto's ninth-inning role.
