LHP Hector Santiago gave up four runs on seven hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings, getting the loss in the Angels' 8-0 setback to the Cardinals on Tuesday. It was Santiago's shortest outing of the season and marked the third consecutive start in which he failed to last six innings. He also has seen a dip in his velocity, from 93-94 mph earlier in the season to 89-90 mph on Tuesday. "Yeah, we've talked about that, we talked to Hector in between starts and we talked to him today," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He feels good. His delivery adds a lot of deception, and at times, when it's not quite in sync, the ball might not be coming out as crisply as it would when he has things together."

LHP Hector Santiago assumes the role as the Angels' de facto ace Tuesday night against the St. Louis Cardinals. Santiago, an American League All-Star last year, inherited the role when RHP Garrett Richards tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. Richards is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery. Santiago has thrown three quality starts and allowed opponents to hit .236 against him.

LHP Hector Santiago went six innings Saturday, allowing two runs and four hits while striking out seven. Santiago is 2-0 to start the season and the Angels have won each of his past 10 starts. That is the longest streak of his career without a loss and is tied for the fourth-longest streak in Angels history behind Chuck Finley (18), Jered Weaver (12) and John Candelaria (12).

LHP Hector Santiago fanned 10 White Sox on Monday, the third time in his career he struck out 10, his career best. The two hits he allowed were the fewest he has surrendered since last September, when he only allowed one hit against the Red Sox. He fired seven scoreless innings Monday at Chicago.

LHP Hector Santiago gave up four runs on seven hits over 7 2/3 innings and got a no-decision Tuesday night when the Angels came from behind to defeat the A's 5-4. He gave up two solo home runs to A's SS Marcus Semien. "He was really good," Angels C Geovany Soto said of Santiago. "Early we were back and forth with the command, but after that third, fourth inning rolled around, he kind of was cruising there for a couple innings. He found his groove a little bit. A couple balls Semien hit pretty good. You got to tip your hat to him."

LHP Hector Santiago gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks in six-plus innings Thursday against the Rangers. He said the only bad pitch he made was on No. 9 hitter Robinson Chirinos' third-inning home run. "Besides that, I did everything I wanted to do," Santiago said. "I mixed up all my pitches, I threw everything for first-pitch strikes, threw everything late in the count, got about five or six screwballs in there, so I did everything I wanted to do." Santiago was a much better pitcher last year in the first half of the season, going 6-4 with a 2.33 ERA and being named to the All-Star team. He was 3-5 with a 5.47 ERA in the second half.

LHP Hector Santiago will make his season debut Thursday against the Rangers. Santiago worked on keeping his pitch count down during the spring, coming off last season when a high pitch count plagued him. He is 6-2 with a 3.36 ERA in 16 career games (13 starts) against the Rangers.

LHP Hector Santiago faced an uphill battle to remain in the Angels' rotation entering spring training, but he appears to have pitched his way into the starting five. Santiago worked six innings on Tuesday against the Athletics, allowing three runs, six hits and a walk while striking out four. Injuries and poor performances by other rotation candidates and Santiago's strong spring make him a virtual certainty to begin the season in the rotation.

Santiago struggled again Saturday, giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk over four-plus innings while striking out five.
The Angels managed to pull out an 11-10 win to stay in the wild card hunt, but Santiago's fourth straight short start didn't do the team any favors. His 3.59 ERA on the season disguises a poor finish, and his 5.47 ERA in the second half is a far cry from his 2.33 ERA pre-All Star break, but overall 2015 was still his most successful season as a starter to date.

Santiago allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks over 5.2 innings in a no decision Monday against Oakland. He struck out four.
Santiago continues to hang on for dear life, as he has just two quality starts in his past eight outings and has a brutal 26:26 K:BB in that span. He has now allowed 27 runs (25 earned) in just 35 innings in those eight starts, but after a walk-off victory Monday night, the Angels are somehow 5-3 in those starts.

Santiago earned his ninth win despite a shaky outing Monday against the Astros, as he allowed two runs on four hits and five walks over five innings. He struck out four.
Luckily, Santiago managed to scatter the four hits, as all four were extra-base knocks, including two solo home runs. Santiago threw more balls (41) than strikes (40) and gave up 10 fly balls against one grounder, but he did just enough to keep his team in it and prevent the Astros from picking up a big inning. His ERA sits at 3.47, but he has just two quality starts in his last six outings and more walks (24) than strikeouts (22) in that span. He's hanging on for dear life at this point.

Santiago couldn't escape the first inning Thursday, giving up five runs on five hits and a walk while getting just two outs against the Twins.
He was fortunate to avoid taking the loss, as Tommy Milone gave up a five spot of his own while recording only four outs, but that's the only silver lining on this start for Santiago. He's been due for regression, as Santiago's K:BB is a hideous 23:22 over his last seven starts, and yet he's managed three quality starts in that span. With the problems Santiago's had, he can't be trusted down the stretch, especially next week against an Astros team that's fighting for a playoff spot.

Santiago (8-9) took a no-decision Saturday, going seven innings while allowing two earned runs on five hits, two walks, and a strikeout in a 3-2 win over the Astros.
The Angels' southpaw was cruising until giving up a mammoth home run to Carlos Correa in the sixth inning. Santiago gradually seems to be reducing his walk rate, now going two consecutive outings allowing just two free passes. While the 27-year-old misses bats at a formidable rate, his inflated 3.41 BB/9 diminishes his mixed league value. Santiago will next take the mound Thursday against the Twins.

Santiago had a shutout working through six innings, giving up just one hit and six walks in a victory over the Rangers on Sunday.
The walk parade was in full force once again on Sunday. After walking 13 batters combined in his previous four starts, Santiago managed to walk a season-high six batters against the Rangers. However, unlike his previous four starts, the 27-year-old was able to work his way out of repeated jams en route to his first victory in well over a month. Santiago will likely face off against the division front-running Astros when he takes the mound on Saturday.

Santiago took the loss Monday against the Athletics as he allowed five runs on four hits and three walks over just 2.2 innings. He struck out four.
Santiago hasn't been able to find it for three straight starts now, as he hasn't gotten out of the fifth inning since August 16. In those three starts, he has walked 10 batters in just 10.2 innings and has seen his ERA jump from 2.86 to 3.37. He also has 10 strikeouts in those three starts -- he can still make batters miss, but his control has failed him completely. He'll have to find the control that allowed him to walk just 41 batters in his first 134.2 innings (2.7 BB/9) if he's going to return to form.

Santiago (7-8) gave up five runs on seven hits and three walks over just 4.1 innings Wednesday in a loss to Detroit.
Once again, Santiago was extremely inefficient, tossing 105 pitches. He was tagged for three long balls and couldn't even finish five innings while Justin Verlander nearly no-hit the Angels on the other end, highlighting the awfulness of this performance. Santiago's pitched a total of just eight innings in his last two starts, and though he's actually raised his strikeout rate since the All-Star break -- 40 in 41.1 innings -- he's also seen his walk and homer rates spike, which is hardly a formula for success. Santiago's always been a high-WHIP pitcher, so it could just be that we're seeing inevitable regression coming for a guy who'd stunned the baseball world with a 2.33 ERA and 1.10 WHIP prior to the All-Star break. The lefty will look to get back on track against Oakland on Monday.

Santiago (7-7) struggled with his control on Saturday, allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits and four walks over just 3.2 innings in a loss to the Blue Jays.
It took Santiago 95 pitches to get through his 3.2 innings and it was clear his control was just not there tonight. The length of games has really been a problem for Santiago as of late, as he's only pitched into the seventh inning once over his last seven starts. Santiago has also lost three straight decisions and his ERA has gone up 0.61 points in that span as well. This is simple regression for a starter who isn't used to this many innings and his early season All-Star form will be hard to re-capture for the remainder of the season.
