Smith is awaiting MRI results on his sprained left ankle, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Smith suffered the sprain while off the field and the severity won't be known until the results of his medical tests are unveiled. Until that happens there's certainly cause for concern that the pitcher could miss a significant portion of the remaining regular season.

Smith was seen using crutches Saturday, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.

It was then reported Smith was using a walking boot which apparently stemmed from an incident in which he slipped on steps at the team hotel. It appears as if Smith suffered a slight sprain, however its unclear how much time he may miss from the injury.

Smith picked up his second save of the season against the White Sox on Wednesday, allowing a hit and a walk over an inning of work.

Both Smith and closer Houston Street had pitched three consecutive nights, but manager Mike Scioscia was apparently more comfortable with Smith taking the ball for the fourth game. Smith would likely be a strong option in the closer's role, as he currently holds a 2.66 ERA in 47.1 innings, but barring an injury to Street, he will stay in the role of setup man going forward.

Smith picked up his first save in Monday's win over the Red Sox, as he recorded four outs without allowing a baserunner and struck out one.

Smith got out of a first-and-third jam to finish the eighth and was handed the reins to the ninth with a four-run lead. Huston Street, who was out with a groin injury through the All-Star break, is available and expected to close again as soon as the Angels find themselves in a more traditional save situation.

Smith will be the Angels' closer in Huston Street's absence, manager Mike Scioscia told The Orange County Register on Thursday.

Street suffered a groin injury in Wednesday's appearance, which left the door open for Smith to close should Street miss some time. Smith will now step into the closer's role for at least this weekend, but it's difficult to gauge his value after the All-Star break given that Street could resume his role at that point. That said, Smith should be a viable short-term closer option for the time being.

Smith pitched a clean inning, facing just three batters and striking out one. He continues to serve in the eighth inning role for the Angels, limiting his value in non-hold leagues, but remains an injury of Huston Street away from taking over the closer role.

Smith was unavailable out of the bullpen Friday against the Tigers due to a knot in his neck, David Adler of MLB.com reports.

Smith would have been called upon in the eighth inning Friday with the Angels holding a 2-0 lead, but manager Mike Scioscia said the reliever was in need of treatment to the address the neck concern, which affects his delivery. It's not known if Smith will be ready to go in time for Saturday's game.

Smith claimed his first win of the season Monday against the Padres, tossing two scoreless innings before Albert Pujols hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

The primary setup man for closer Huston Street, Smith has been dynamite for those in leagues that count holds. He's accumulated 13 already this season and has lowered his ERA to 2.18 after keeping the opponents off the board over his last nine appearances, spanning 9.2 innings.

Smith picked up a blown save on Sunday against the Rangers, allowing three hits and one earned run in the ninth inning.

Closer Huston received the day off on Sunday after working the previous three games, so it was Smith who got the call to close the game out. The latter has been stellar in a setup role this season, as the run allowed was his first of the season, bringing his ERA to 1.13 through eight innings pitched. Smith will continue to throw in high-leverage, late-inning situations, but save chances like this will be few and far between.

Smith came into camp battling stiffness in his legs, but has fully recovered from the ailment, having tallied five strikeouts in four innings of work without allowing a run this spring. Smith is on track to reprise his role as the setup man in the Angels' bullpen in 2015 after notching a career-best 1.81 ERA in 74.2 innings last year.

Smith has been dealing with stiffness in his legs, but the club has not expressed concern that the ailment will prevent him from being ready for Opening Day. He will likely throw one inning against the Rangers on Monday.

Smith has been dealing with "spring-training leg stiffness" this spring, but hopes to get on the mound in the next three or four days, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.

It doesn't sound like the club is too concerned about the issue, as relievers don't need quite as many innings to get themselves ready for the season. Until we are told otherwise, expect Smith to be available in the eighth inning on Opening Day.

With Huston Street still down with a right hamstring injury, Smith figures to get the first crack at closing as a result. As either a part-time closer or setup man this season, Smith has been magnificent, carrying a 1.95 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 64:13 K:BB ratio over 69.1 innings.

Smith received his second win in three games Saturday, as he was able to keep the Twins off the board in the eighth inning before Albert Pujols' double in the top of the ninth gave the Halos the lead. There is certainly no guarantee that Smith will continue to factor into decisions, but he may have a better chance at doing so when Garrett Richards' (knee) spot comes up in the rotation, as manager Mike Scioscia seems content to turn those contests into bullpen days for the time being.

Smith now carries a 2.04 eared-run average with 63 strikeouts in 66.1 innings, and should remain a reliable source for holds going forward.

Smith recorded two outs in the inning before a wild pitch brought Coco Crisp home from third, breaking a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the eighth. Smith has excelled for the Angels this season, tallying a 2.17 ERA in 63 appearances, but picked a bad day to lose his control, as the A's are now tied with the Halos for first place in the AL West.

The right-hander should remain a strong fantasy piece in the second half as the Angels continue to click.
