Thu Feb 8 201814:51Rockies boost bullpen in effort to make it back to playoffs
DENVER (AP) — Nolan Arenado didn't travel home with the team after the Colorado Rockies lost at Arizona in last October's wild-card game.He needed some time to himself, to reflect on a season in which the Rockies made it back to the postseason for the first time since 2009 only to have the run abruptly end with an 11-8 loss to the Diamondbacks. The Gold Glove third baseman played some golf, went to a concert all by himself — Post Malone — and then made a vow to work even harder .This from a player who hit 37 homers and drove in 130 runs a season ago."A little depression after that wild-card game," Arenado said. "I was so upset. I wanted to play more baseball.Colorado went 87-75 in manager Bud Black's first season and was looking for a deeper playoff run."It hurt, but it can only make us better. I talked to some of the guys, and they still talk about it to this day. It's like, 'Dang, what happened? How did that game go crazy like that?" Arenado said. "That's a good thing to have. It makes... RHP Bryan Shaw wasn't quite able to close out Cleveland's 5-2 Saturday night win over Detroit. He gave up two singles to open the ninth and was relieved after getting two fly balls outs. "That's why a lot of times we go to Cody in a four-run game," manager Terry Francona said. "It's not because Bryan can't do it, but when you give up a couple runners you've got to get your guy up hot anyway. But because (Shaw) was throwing in the eighth, and Cody had thrown 30 pitches Friday, we were trying to minimize what Cody would have had to throw in this game."

Shaw is the dependable setup man for back-of-the-pen stalwarts RHP Cody Allen and LHP Andrew Miller. Nobody appreciates Shaw's value more than manager Terry Francona. "He's like an offensive lineman in football. The only time he gets noticed is when he misses a block," Francona said. "He's been amazingly resilient and consistent."

Shaw, who led the league in appearances with a club record 80 in 2014, leads the league again this year with 73. Since the start of the 2013 season Shaw has appeared in more games (297) than any pitcher in the majors. "To do that you've got to be good and you've got to be resilient," manager Terry Francona said. "He'll take the ball when a lot of pitchers won't."

Fri May 20 201601:27Indians' bullpen proves deep, versatile
CINCINNATI -- Terry Francona has options in his bullpen, options he trusts."It's a good feeling to not feel like you need to hide somebody," the Cleveland Indians manager said. The Indians' 12-inning, 8-7 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday was a great example. Cleveland relievers had to cover 6 2/3 innings in relief of rookie Mike Clevinger, who tossed 5 1/3 innings in his major league debut.Closer Cody Allen who is 9-for-9 in save conversions, wasn't used in a save situation, and instead he tossed two scoreless innings to earn his first victory of the season.Dan Otero pitched the 12th inning and allowed a hit and a walk but no runs to earn his first save.Francona was particularly impressed with Otero and Joba Chamberlain, who extended his scoreless appearances streak to seven."They've been outstanding," Francona said. RHP Bryan Shaw had an unusual outing on Sunday against Detroit. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus twice questioned Shaw's ability to wear his wedding ring on his glove hand. The umpires convened and allowed Shaw to continue to wear the ring but he put it in his back pocker after Ausmus' second complaint. "I feel like he made his point the first time," Shaw said. "The umpires checked my ring, it's a rubber ring. If you can find a way to scuff a ball with a rubber ring, more power to you. I've had it on the last 2 1/2 years and nobody's said a word about it from any team."
