Gillaspie was already primed to receive regular action at third base before this news, and it is unlikely he plays enough first to become eligible at the position until well into the season.

Gilaspie's chances of retaining his third base role for the White Sox increased when the team optioned Matt Davidson to Triple-A on Wednesday.

The extra muscle should help put a bit more into his swing, but he also credited his improved batting average last year to his focus on putting the ball in play rather than over the wall. He enters 2015 as the heavy favorite to keep his third base gig, though that will not be guaranteed.
