C Bryan Holaday pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, his first career pitching appearance. Holaday didn't allow a hit or a walk and became the 12th Rangers position player in history to pitch in a game.

C Bryan Holaday's two-run home run in the third inning off RHP Corey Kluber was his second of the year and fifth of his career. "I was just looking for a pitch I could put the barrel on, and it worked out," Holaday said. "It was a good pitch, down and in, but unfortunately he was able to put a good swing on it," Kluber said.

Holaday was recalled by the Tigers on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old catcher has played just 16 games at the big league level this season, but managed to put together a .271/.271/.396 slash line to go with 12 RBI in that span. He and Kyle Ryan are two of the Tigers' first callups since rosters expanded.

Holaday will be called up from Triple-A Toledo to the Tigers on Tuesday, Chris Iott of MLive.com reports.

Holaday has been banged up this season, but hit well in 16 games with the Tigers this season, going 13-for-48 with four extra-base hits. He hasn't fared quite as well in Triple-A, hitting for a .224/.282/.311 slash line in 49 games, but should provide extra help behind the plate in the final month of the season.

Holaday (thumb) was re-diagnosed with a dislocation and not a fracture, meaning he could return this season, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.

While he could return this season, he would still be behind James McCann and Alex Avila on the organizational depth chart, meaning his fantasy value would be quite limited.

Holaday suffered a broken thumb while playing for Triple-A Toledo on Monday, Lynn Henning of the Detroit News reports.

The veteran backstop was hurt in a home-plate collision. He wasn't expected to return to the majors this year in the first place, and this injury makes it all but certain.

Holaday has been optioned to Triple-A Toledo.

With the return of Alex Avila from the DL, Holaday was deemed expendable. He'll remain in the minors the rest of the way barring an injury to Avila or James McCann during the second half of the season.

Holaday will start at catcher Thursday against the Athletics, reports MLive.com.

He's hitting .294 with one home run and six RBI in four starts, but he's batting ninth for a team mired in a six-game losing streak. He may not afford spot value to your roster.

Holaday went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI in Sunday's game against Houston.

Alex Avila is still rehabbing his knee, so Holaday will remain with the Tigers as James McCann's back-up until Avila returns. Holaday is hitting well, but he's only starting once during each pitching rotation and that leaves his value tied to daily activations. There are better guys to stack on your bench.

Holaday went 3-for-5 and fell a triple short of the cycle Thursday against the Twins. He delivered a single in the fifth, a ground-rule double in the sixth and a two-run home run in the eighth inning.

It was his first game of 2015 and he sure made the most of it. He was a late cut in spring training and got off to a slow start with Toledo (.230 with four extra-base hits in 18 games) before the call up. It was a career game for Holaday, but don't expect much repetition. He'll remain behind James McCann in the number two spot for now.

Holaday has struggled at Triple-A Toledo, slashing .230/.273/.328 with a 15:3 strikeout-to-walk ratio. His fantasy value is negligible given that he will likely be sent back down once Avila returns, for which he is eligible May 22.

James McCann will win the backup catcher spot behind Alex Avila, which has been the expected outcome since the outset of spring training. Given Avila's recent concussion history, Holaday could wind up spending time as the backup on the Tigers' roster at some point this season.

It's his first three-hit game of the season and first multi-hit game since May 14. Overall, Holaday has been productive in limited playing time, slashing .309/.339/.364 in 59 plate appearances.

With two outs in the ninth inning and speedy Austin Jackson on third base, Holaday took advantage of the defense by sending a bunt down the third base line. It wasn't a squeeze, as Jackson scored on his own volition and not as part of a set play, but it got the job done. Feeling frisky, Holaday later stole second base for good measure, the first stolen base of his young career. It was quite a night for the backup catcher.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said Sunday that he feels Bryan Holaday is ready to serve as the primary backup to Alex Avila in 2014.

Of course Dombrowski made similar statements about Holaday last offseason, before inking Bryan Pena to a one-year deal to fill that role. The 25-year-old backstop hit just .260/.312/.372 with four homers and 24 RBI in 80 games at Triple-A Toledo in 2013.
