SAN DIEGO (AP) — Right-hander Bryan Mitchell and infielder Greg Garcia both agreed to $910,000, one-year contracts with the San Diego Padres on Friday.The 27-year-old Mitchell was 2-4 with a 5.42 ERA in 11 starts and five relief appearances for the Padres, who acquired him from the Yankees last December. He made seven starts, was sent to the bullpen, went on the disabled list for 2½ months because of a right elbow impingement, then had four starts in September.Garcia, 29, is from San Diego's El Cajon suburb and was claimed off waivers from St. Louis on Nov. 1. 3B Greg Garcia made his first start since June 13 and recorded his sixth multi-hit game of the season. Garcia broke up RHP Seth Lugo's no-hit bid with a double in the fifth and added a single in the seventh. Those hits ended an 0-for-9 skid for Garcia, whose last hits were July 5 in Miami.

2B Greg Garcia made two errors Wednesday, doubling his season total to four in 32 games on the field. Garcia mishandled a Tommy Joseph grounder in the first inning and made a throwing error while trying to turn a double play in the fourth. The first miscue resulted in three unearned runs against RHP Michael Wacha.

SS Greg Garcia batted second for the third time this year. He went 0-for-3 but was robbed of a hit leading off the seventh when LF Ian Desmond made a diving grab of Garcia's sinking liner. Before the game, manager Mike Matheny said of putting Garcia in the second spot, "Love his at-bats off the bench. No matter whether you bring him in late against a closer or a set-up guy, just grinding through. He doesn't flinch. I think he's a guy that can make things happen. In a stadium like this, he can put together an at-bat, put pressure on the defense."

3B Greg Garcia, who was called up from Triple-A Memphis on Thursday, got the start at third base again Saturday while SS Miguel Tejada was designated for assignment. He hit eighth in the lineup and had a RBI single in the second, a double in the sixth and bunt single in the eighth. "That's just a young player taking advantage," manager Mike Matheny said. "Give a guy a chance and watch him run and let him do his thing. Just good baseball plays. Laying the bunt down, doing a nice job in the field. It's fun when you can bring up a young player and he's got that energy."

3B Greg Garcia continues to impress in his limited time in the majors this year. He hit leadoff and his walk in the third helped begin a five-run inning against Max Scherzer on Friday. Garcia was 1-for-2 with two runs, an RBI and two walks. He also made a nice play at third to start a double play in the sixth.

INF Greg Garcia was called up from Triple-A Memphis on Thursday as INF Matt Carpenter went on the paternity list. Garcia was hitting .600 (6-for-10) when he was sent back to Memphis earlier this year, prompting manager Mike Matheny to joke that perhaps something is wrong with the process when that happens. Garcia was 1-for-1 with a walk Thursday and is now hitting .636.

Therein lies the rub with Garcia, who is a better hitter than Tejada but isn't considered a plus defender at any position.

INF Greg Garcia went 2-for-3, reaching base three times, and scored a run in a rare start at shortstop. But Garcia also made an error that led to two unearned runs in the fourth inning, and with Tejada apparently ready to go on Monday, someone has to go down to make room. Even though Garcia is a reliable hitter, he might be the one that has to pack his bags.

Garcia will make his third straight start in the middle infield Sunday against the Reds.

Garcia had previously been filling in for Kolten Wong at second base, but he's manned shortstop the last two games with the Cardinals giving Jhonny Peralta an extended break. Peralta and Wong still looked to be locked in as regulars in the middle infield for the Cardinals, but Garcia's impressive .294/.368/.490 line over 51 at-bats with the big club to date may afford him frequent playing time down the stretch.

Garcia (hand) will return to the lineup and play third base, bating eighth against the Diamondbacks on Thursday.

Garcia probably won't receive consistent starts at third base, but the Cardinals will go with a new alignment Thursday in which Chris Carpenter is starting at third base. If that were to continue, there's potential for Garcia (who's batting .296/.367/.481 in 19 games with the Cardinals) to see some added playing time.

Garcia (hand) is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Diamondbacks, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

The 26-year-old Garcia hurt his hand Monday and is now set to sit for a second straight game, but he's not a regular in the lineup and thus it's difficult to gauge the severity of this issue. Kolten Wong rebounded with a two-hit effort Tuesday and should still be viewed as the primary option at second base.

Garcia (hand) is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks.

The Cardinals have not elaborated on the extent of Garcia's injury, which he suffered on a slide into third base late in Monday's game. Thus, it's uncertain whether his absence is truly due to the hand issue, but it seems likely he would be in there if healthy over Kolten Wong, who appears to be deep in manager Mike Matheny's doghouse thanks to his second-half struggles.

Garcia exited Monday's game against the Diamondbacks in the seventh inning with an apparent injury to his hand, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.

Garcia suffered the injury while sliding into third and didn't take the field in the bottom of the seventh as Pete Kozma assumed duties at second base. The severity of the injury remains unknown but Garcia's current streak of two consecutive starts is in danger heading into Tuesday as either Kozma or Kolten Wong will benefit from a start if Garcia is confined to the dugout.

Garcia was recalled from Triple-A Memphis prior to Sunday's game against the Padres.

Garcia will provide the Cardinals with another utility option in the infield, but with Pete Kozma already in place to serve as a depth option, it's difficult to envision Garcia seeing even spot duty. The 25-year-old has at least enjoyed some success in his small sample of at-bats with the Cardinals earlier this season, going 7-for-20 with a homer and two RBI.
