San Diego brought in Clint Barmes this offseason to compete with Amarista for the starting shortstop job, but Amarista has been up to the challenge thus far. On the other hand, Barmes has gone 1-for-6 with a strikeout through three games and he has also committed two errors. While it's still early in the race, Amarista has the advantage right now.

Amarista signed a two-year, $2.5 million contract with the Padres on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports.

The Padres' significant offseason additions may prevent Amarista from claiming a starting role to open 2015, but his ability to play multiple positions should nonetheless allow him to pick up ample at-bats throughout the season. He put together a meager .239/.286/.314 batting line last season, but made up for it to a degree with his proficiency on the basepaths, where he stole 12 bases in 13 attempts.

Amarista went 1-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI against the Giants on Friday.

The Padres didn't have a ton of hits on the night, but they made them count when they had to as in Amarista's case. Amarista (.246/.293/.325) is never going to be a bat to build a team around, but he can help fill a middle infield role for fantasy owners.
