The Chicago Tribune's Mark Gonzales reports that if Chris Sale stays in the bullpen, Lucas Harrell, Phil Humber and Jeff Gray could compete for the fifth spot in the rotation until Jake Peavy is ready. | ||||||
Manager Ozzie Guillen's preference is to keep Sale in the bullpen, where he would compete with Matt Thornton for the closer job. Gray is a strange inclusion on the list given that he hasn't started a game since 2006 when he was back in A-ball. Harrell would be the favorite out of the trio since he pitched in eight games -- starting three -- last season. Guillen noted that whoever the No. 5 starter is could be skipped over a few times in April since the team has a couple early days off. | ||||||

To be fair, Harrell was just taking Daniel Hudson's roster spot for a day and knew he wasn't long for Chicago. That roster spot had to be cleared to make room for Edwin Jackson. Harrell struck out just one while walking five, but he gave up just one run. It's a boost to his confidence and something nice for the resume, but Harrell is expected to be optioned back down shortly. | ||||||
