Marquis threw three scoreless innings in his second spring training start of the year Sunday against the Mariners. "I thought it went really well," said Marquis. "I thought it was a big improvement over the first game just in terms of I was pounding the bottom of the strike zone with my sinker. I would have liked to have thrown from the stretch but I'm competing for a spot, so it's nice to put up zeroes and go from there."
Even though Marquis missed a good chunk of the 2014 season with an injury, he's pretty much a known quantity at this point in his career. So while pitching well now might help him earn an Opening Day roster spot, it's unlikely to make him a viable fantasy option in and of itself.

Starting the Reds' spring training opener, Marquis threw two scoreless innings, striking out three while walking two.
Marquis has an outside chance of winning a rotation spot for the Reds, a chance that would be increased if Homer Bailey isn't ready to start the season.

Marquis has signed with the Reds on a minor league deal with an invite to spring training.
Marquis spent his 2014 season in the Phillies minor league system, though he was released in August after posting an unimpressive 4.63 ERA with the Triple-A club. The 36-year-old hasn't appeared in the majors since 2013, and hasn't performed particularly well in his most recent stints, but he'll have a shot to make the big league roster in spring training.

The Phillies released Marquis from his minor-league contract on Sunday.
The Phillies weren't considering promoting the 36-year-old to the big leagues when rosters expanded Monday, so the team decided it was in their best interest to part ways with the veteran. Marquis posted a 4.63 ERA over 46.2 innings with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, mediocre numbers that probably won't generate heavy interest from other teams looking to bolster their pitching staffs in September.

Manager Ryne Sandberg said the Phillies have not discussed bringing Marquis up to the majors, CSN Philly reports.
Marquis just returned from the disabled list at Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Wednesday. He allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings in his first start since straining his oblique last month. It is likely the Phillies will give him a look after he has a chance to shake off the rust in the minors.

Marquis (oblique) has been activated from the DL at Triple-A Lehigh Valley and will start Wednesday's game.
On the shelf since July 22 with an oblique strain, the 35-year-old will return to the mound for the first time in over three weeks. He has not pitched in the majors this season but has impressed in five minor league starts, going 2-0 with a 1.84 ERA in 29.1 cumulative innings. If he continues to pitch well, he could make a couple starts for the last-place Phillies in September.

Mon Mar 17 201414:45Jason Marquis auditions for Padres
Sirius XM's Jim Bowden reports that Jason Marquis (elbow) auditioned for the Padres Sunday.
Bowden says that Marquis was "impressive" in the throwing session. The veteran right-hander is seven months removed from Tommy John surgery and is expected to be game-ready by June. With Cory Luebke (elbow) out for the season and Joe Wieland's (elbow) status up in the air, the Padres could sign Marquis for depth purposes. The 35-year-old had a 4.05 ERA in 20 starts for San Diego last season.

Mon Nov 4 201316:31Padres activate RHP Marquis from 60-day DL
Padres activated RHP Jason Marquis from the 60-day disabled list.
Marquis promptly declared for free agency. Marquis underwent Tommy John surgery in July and will likely be sidelined late into the 2014 season, a status that will obviously suppress his open market appeal. The sinkerballer posted a 4.05 ERA over 20 starts for the Friars this past season.

Padres transferred RHP Jason Marquis from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Padres manager Bud Black confirmed Tuesday that Jason Marquis (elbow) will have Tommy John surgery.
It appeared inevitable, as Marquis was recently found to have "significant damage" to the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. The surgery will likely leave him sidelined until late in the 2014 season. The 35-year-old will be a free agent this winter.

Mon Jul 22 201318:12Marquis likely headed for Tommy John surgery
Padres manager Bud Black revealed Monday that Jason Marquis has "significant damage" to the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
It doesn't appear that the Padres have made firm plans yet, but this surely means that Marquis is headed for Tommy John surgery. The sinkerballer posted a 4.05 ERA over 20 starts for the Pads this season but will now likely be sidelined until the second half of 2014. He'll be a free agent this winter.

Fri Jul 19 201323:30Marquis blitzed for six runs in loss to Cards
Jason Marquis was spanked for six runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings Friday in a loss to the Cardinals.
He struck out zero and walked three in the dud. On June 15, Marquis was 9-2 with a 3.63 ERA. He hasn't won since and now sits on a 4.05 earned run average. Of more concern, Marquis has walked more batters than he's struck out in that span. Don't let the decent ERA fool you: He is not a good fantasy bet.

Fri Jul 12 201301:22Marquis gives up two runs in no-decision
Jason Marquis gave up two runs over 5 1/3 innings Thursday in a no-decision against the Giants.
Marquis yielded seven hits (including a solo homer by Pablo Sandoval) and two walks while notching three strikeouts. The veteran right-hander will go into the All-Star break with nine wins and a 3.77 ERA through 19 starts. However, with a 72/65 K/BB ratio in 112 1/3 innings, he's a really poor bet to keep it up as the season moves along.

Sat Jul 6 201319:40Jason Marquis allows three runs to Nationals
Jason Marquis allowed three earned runs over six innings Saturday in a no-decision vs. the Nationals.
San Diego had the lead when Marquis exited the game but coughed it up during a seventh-inning collapse. The soft-tossing right-hander gave up eight hits and walked three, so it's not like he was cheated out of a victory. Marquis will carry a 3.79 ERA and 1.49 WHIP into his next scheduled outing at home against the Giants. He is not a good fantasy bet despite some still-shiny rate stats.

Mon Jul 1 201322:41Jason Marquis walks seven in loss
Despite walking seven betters, Jason Marquis went without allowing an earned run in 6 1/3 innings against the Marlins on Monday.
Marquis did give up four unearned runs and was tagged with the loss, so it wasn't all roses. He now has a 66/60 K/BB ratio in 101 innings for the season. The 9-4 win-loss record and 3.74 ERA are nifty, but no one should expect him to keep it up.
