Johnson pitched a perfect ninth Wednesday against the Padres for his 3rd save of the season.

Closer Jason Grilli was rested after pitching two straight days, so Johnson got the nod Wednesday. Johnson will resume his role as the Braves' main setup man going forward.

Johnson threw a scoreless eighth inning Saturday, giving up one hit and striking out one, to notch his 11th hold of the season.

With Jason Grilli back in the closer role after his recent back spasms, Johnson is once again the Braves' main set-up man. However he's been used he's been pitching well, and now sports a 2.95 ERA and 16:4 K:BB ratio in 18.1 innings on the season.

Johnson earned his second save of the season Monday against the Reds with Jason Grilli (back spasms) unavailable.

Johnson had been serving as the setup man for the Braves. With Grilli not on the disabled list, expect him to return to the closer's role soon. Johnson's ERA is down to 3.52 after it was as high as 5.63 earlier this season.

Grilli is considered day-to-day for now, but was unavailable over the weekend. Johnson's worth a short-term look if you need saves.

Johnson allowed a pair of runs on three hits, he did not walk a batter and struck out one over an inning of work to record his fourth hold in Atlanta's 8-7 win over Toronto on Friday night.

After the Braves dealt closer Craig Kimbrel to San Diego, the pair of Johnson and Jason Grilli were thrust into the late inning roles for the Braves. Both had been performing exceptionally well before this little blemish (Grilli did record his fifth save with a clean ninth inning in this one), but Johnson has gone through stretches of extreme volatility over the past couple of seasons.

Johnson recorded his first save of the season Saturday against the Mets.

Johnson gave up one hit in one inning of work. He threw 11 strikes out of his 16 pitches Saturday to get through the inning. He has yet to give up a run on the year.

Johnson tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in the Braves' win over the Marlins on Monday.

He picked up a hold for the effort, finishing the seventh inning before handling the Marlins in the eighth. Jason Grilli earned the save Monday, and Johnson is likely the next in line option to work the ninth inning if an injury or bout of ineffectiveness derails Grilli in the near future.

Johnson will serve as the Braves' top setup man to begin the year, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Johnson's proven success as a closer -- he saved more games than anyone in baseball while with Baltimore from 2012-13 -- made him a logical choice for a higher-leverage role after Craig Kimbrel was dealt to the Padres. Manager Fredi Gonzalez confirmed that Johnson will set up new closer Jason Grilli, and will be next in line for opportunities when Grilli needs a day off.

Johnson might be in the mix to close for the Braves following the Craig Kimbrel trade.

The Braves haven't said yet who will close, but the two most likely candidates for now are Jason Grilli and Johnson. Grilli is probably the more likely option, having actually been effective in the second half of last season, unlike Johnson.

Johnson could be used in multi-inning stints this season, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. "That's something we have spoken about, with (pitching coach) Roger (McDowell), and I think it's a good thing," manager Fredi Gonzales said. "(Johnson) wants to do it. That gives you nice little flexibility. You can't do it three days in a row. You might go an inning and a third, or an inning and two-thirds. But it gives you a little flexibility that he can do that."

Johnson, who led the majors in saves from 2012-13 with 101, has worked exclusively in one-inning stints with the big club so far this spring. However, he made a two-inning appearance on the minor league side last week, and he's scheduled to pitch more than one inning Saturday. The 31-year-old right-hander struggled mightily in 54 appearances between Oakland and Detroit last season (7.09 ERA), but he will look to recoup some value with Atlanta this year before hitting the open market again in the winter.

Johnson made his Tigers debut Sunday, giving up three runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk, striking out one while recording just two outs.

The location changes but the results remain the same for Johnson, who also didn't pitch all that great at Triple-A Toledo before getting called up by the Tigers.

Johnson has been called up by the Tigers, James Schmehl of MLive.com reports.

Despite a 5.79 ERA over four appearances with Toledo, Johnson is taking over the roster spot of Melvin Mercedes. The Tigers will likely break him in middle relief, with the hope that he can rediscover his pre-2014 form.

Johnson is on the verge of being recalled from Triple-A Toledo, but the Tigers instead elected to recall Melvin Mercedes prior to Thursday's game, MLB.com's Jason Beck reports.

It seems Johnson needs at least one more outing at Toledo before Detroit will be fully confident in adding them to their bullpen mix. The right-handed reliever has already made three appearances for Toledo, allowing one earned run over 3.2 innings. His most recent outing was his best, as Johnson struck out one batter over two perfect innings. He'll be in the mix by the end of the season, but likely in a sixth or seventh inning role.

The Tigers expect to stick to their plan on building up Johnson in Triple-A Toledo this week, even with Joakim Soria going on the DL.

Kevin Whelan was called up Sunday night, but the next callup could be Ian Krol or Justin Miller before Johnson.

Johnson signed a minor league contract with the Tigers on Tuesday, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports.

It was believed that if no franchise extended more than a minor league deal, Johnson would return to his previous organization with the Orioles. However, the Tigers' standing couldn't be higher at the moment following the acquisition of David Price at the trade deadline. Johnson will certainly have to prove his worth at Triple-A Toledo, after posting a hideous 7.14 ERA, 2.058 WHIP, and 28:23 K:BB in 40.1 innings with the Athletics prior to his release Friday. However, Detroit's bullpen boasts the third-worst ERA (4.53) in all of MLB in 2014, which could result in a late-inning role by the time rosters expand in September.

Johnson will likely sign a minor-league contract with the Orioles, MASN Sports' Roch Kubatko reports.

It makes sense to rejoin the organization with which he had so much success the last few years, but Johnson's struggles can't merely be blamed on a change of scenery. With the O's bullpen shaping up nicely for the stretch run, Johnson's best-case scenario would be working his way into a middle-relief role.

Johnson was released by the A's on Friday.

This officially ends Johnson's difficult tenure with the A's. He started the season as the closer, but finishes his time with the A's with a 7.14 ERA and a 2.06 WHIP in 40.1 innings. With his past success as the Orioles closer, there will likely be a team that takes a shot on him now that he is a free agent.

Oakland GM Billy Beane made a rare mistake this winter when he traded for Johnson and his $10 million salary for 2014. The right-hander had poor peripherals in Baltimore despite his dominant save totals and wound up posting a brutal 6.92 ERA in 40 1/3 innings with the A's. Johnson should latch on with a new team pretty quickly as a reclamation project, but he's probably done getting save opportunities.

Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports that the Marlins "remain interested" in Jim Johnson.

The Marlins nearly completed a deal for Johnson last month before opting for Bryan Morris instead. However, it appears they haven't given up on acquiring the struggling former closer, with Spencer saying the club has discussed sending pitching prospect Adam Conley to Oakland for the reliever. Johnson holds a 6.25 ERA with 23 walks in 40 innings this season and is making $10 million. The A's will have to pick up the bulk of the remainder of his contract in any trade.

According to John Hickey of the Oakland Tribune, the Athletics remain eager to find a new home for former closer Jim Johnson.

The catch, is that the A's don't want to have to eat any of Johnson's $10 million contract. With a 6.25 ERA, 1.96 WHIP and 28/23 K/BB ratio through his 40 1/3 innings on the season, it's unlikely that any interested parties are going to come calling to acquire the veteran right-hander's services.
