Wed Jan 19 201115:43Nats ink Jerry Hairston Jr. to 1-yr deal
Nationals signed INF-OF Jerry Hairston Jr. to a one-year, $2 million contract.
He could reportedly earn another $1 million in performance-based incentives. Hairston, who turns 35 in May, batted 244/.299/.353 with 10 home runs and 50 RBI over 119 games in a utility role with the Padres last season. He should be an upgrade over Willie Harris and a reliable backup for Ian Desmond and Danny Espinosa in the middle infield.

Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports that Jerry Hairston Jr. has agreed to terms with the Nationals.
Hairston has already passed a physical. According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, he has agreed to a one-year, $2 million contract with another $1 million in potential incentives. Hairston, who turns 35 in May, batted .244/.299/.353 with 10 home runs and 50 RBI with the Padres last season before he went on the disabled list with a fractured tibia in September. He should be a useful utility player for the Nats.

Mon Jan 17 201112:02Nats think Hairston Jr. is seeking too much
According to Bill Ladson of MLB.com, the Nationals believe that Jerry Haiston Jr.'s current asking price is too high.
The Nats are targeting veteran infielder Alex Cora instead and may be trying to get him to agree to a minor league contract. Hairston Jr. probably wants something with a little more in guaranteed salary. He batted .244/.299/.353 with 10 home runs and 50 RBI for the Padres last season. The Friars had interest in re-signing him, but not after striking a deal with Orlando Hudson.

Thu Jan 13 201120:24Nats 'considering' free agent Jerry Hairston
The Nationals "are considering" free agent infielder Jerry Hairston Jr., according to Bill Ladson of MLB.com.
The Nats have not been able to find a middle ground with Willie Harris, who is expected to sign with another major league club in the next week or two. Hairston, who turns 35 next May, posted a .244/.299/.353 batting line, 10 home runs and 50 RBI for the Padres last season before a fractured right tibia put him on the disabled list for good in September. He would be a fine utilityman on any team and would fit nicely on the Nationals' depth chart.

Tue Dec 21 201014:46Padres unlikely to bring back Hairston Jr.
With the acquisitions of Jason Bartlett and Orlando Hudson, the Padres are now unlikely to bring back Jerry Hairston Jr.
The Pads wouldn't mind having him back as an insurance policy, but they've already spent all of their allotted money for the middle infield. Everth Cabrera and Eric Patterson are cheaper options for utility roles. Hairston should have no problem catching on as a utility player somewhere.

Tue Dec 14 201020:11Padres interested in re-signing Hairston Jr
Dan Hayes of the North County Times received confirmation that the Padres are still interested in re-signing Jerry Hairston Jr.
The Padres are still trying to settle on a shortstop and second baseman, so Hairston would be a good insurance policy for either position. Meanwhile, a source tells Hayes that 4-5 teams are after Hairston and that the race is "heating up." Hairston, who turns 35 next May, batted .244/.299/.353 with 10 home runs and 50 RBI with the Padres this past season before he was shut down in September due to a fractured right tibia.
