Mon Oct 16 202315:38Gabriel Moreno Back In Game 1 Lineup For NLCS
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (hand, wrist) is back in the starting lineup for Game 1 of the National League Championship Series on Monday against the Philadelphia Phillies. He's doing the catching and batting fifth against Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler. Moreno took a foul tip off his right hand/wrist in Game 3 of the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers and was forced to the game, but he had plenty of time to heal up after the D-backs swept their division rivals in the five-game series. X-rays were negative and Moreno was able to take batting practice on Sunday. The 23-year-old Venezuelan backstop will look to stay hot in the postseason after clubbing three homers and driving in six in his first five playoff games. He's gone 0-for-3 in his career against Wheeler.

Thu Oct 12 202301:31Gabriel Moreno Leaves Game 3 Early, X-Rays Come Back Negative
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (hand) was forced to leave Game 3 of the National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers early on Wednesday after he was hit on the right hand with a foul tip in the fifth inning. However, X-rays came back negative and he was diagnosed with a right-hand contusion. The 23-year-old backstop will now have four days to rest up before the start of the Championship Series against either the Atlanta Braves or Philadelphia Phillies. Before leaving the game, Moreno went 1-for-2 with a solo home run (his third of the postseason) in the eventual 4-2 victory to sweep the division rivals in the NLDS. The young catcher has gone 4-for-16 with three homers, six RBI, five strikeouts and three runs scored in his first five career postseason games so far this October.

Thu Oct 5 202322:50Gabriel Moreno Will Return For NLDS Game 1
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (head) will be back behind the plate for Game 1 of the National League Division Series on Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers and left-hander Clayton Kershaw. Moreno took a backswing to the head while catching in the second inning on Wednesday in Game 2 of the wild-card series and was removed an inning later as a precaution. The 23-year-old backstop apparently has passed the league's concussion protocols and will be on the roster for the NLDS. It's great news for the D-backs as they look for a big upset over the division-rival Dodgers in the next series. Moreno is excellent defensively and hit a clutch go-ahead home run in the victory in Game 1 of the wild-card series on Tuesday. He hit .284 (97-for-341) on the season with seven homers, 50 RBI and six stolen bases in 111 games in his first full big-league campaign.

Wed Oct 4 202320:22Gabriel Moreno Leaves Game After Taking Backswing To The Head
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (head) was forced to leave Game 2 of the wild-card series on Wednesday against the Milwaukee Brewers after taking a backswing from infielder Brice Turang to the head while catching in the bottom of the second inning. Moreno was replaced behind the plate in the bottom of the third inning by backup Jose Herrera. The 23-year-old will be put through the league's concussion protocol, and it remains to be seen if he'll be available for a deciding Game 3 on Thursday if Milwaukee holds on to win Wednesday. If Arizona has to remove Moreno from the roster for a deciding Game 3, he wouldn't be available to play at all in the National League Division Series if the Snakes advance. Moreno struck out in his only plate appearance before leaving, but he hit a big go-ahead home run in the Game 1 victory on Tuesday.

Wed Aug 30 202319:29Gabriel Moreno Takes A Seat Wednesday
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno is receiving the day off on Wednesday night versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. Moreno, the team's everyday backstop, is just getting a normal day of rest. Jose Herrera will catch rookie right-hander Brandon Pfaadt and will hit eighth against Dodgers right-hander Ryan Pepiot. The 23-year-old Moreno doesn't have much power (just six home runs), but he's hitting a strong .283 (76-for-269) in his first year in the desert and has gone an impressive 16-for-47 (.340) with three home runs, three doubles, a triple, 12 RBI and nine runs scored in 13 games (12 starts) since coming off the injured list on Aug. 13. Herrera is hitting only .213 (19-for-89) and is still searching for his first big-league homer in his 84th game on Wednesday.

Sat Aug 19 202313:28Gabriel Moreno Absent From The Lineup For First Game Of Doubleheader
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno is not in the starting lineup for Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the San Diego Padres. It sounds like Moreno will get the first game off as Jose Herrera starts behind the dish. The 23-year-old backstop should start Game 2 of the doubleheader, however. Moreno is batting .313/.313/563 with a double, a home run, and two RBI in the five games since he was activated from the injured list. He's an intriguing add in deeper leagues down the stretch.

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (shoulder) has been activated from the 10-day injured list on Sunday. The 23-year-old catcher has been on the shelf since late July while dealing with left shoulder inflammation. He's compiled a .270/.316/.360 triple-slash line to go along with three home runs, 28 RBI, and four stolen bases over 222 at-bats this year. Veteran Carson Kelly was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. The D-Backs are going to give Moreno every opportunity to showcase his skills down the stretch.

Sat Aug 5 202310:27Gabriel Moreno Hits Off Tee Recently
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (shoulder) was hitting off a tee in the past few days. The 23-year-old could further increase baseball activity and take batting practice at some point early next week. Moreno went down with left shoulder inflammation on July 23 and Carson Kelly and Jose Herrera have split catching duties in his void. Moreno's return timeline remains unclear, but a late-August comeback to the major-league lineup seems reasonable if all goes well. The 2022 No. 1 Toronto Blue Jays prospect has mostly disappointed in 2023, hitting .270 with a .676 OPS, three home runs, 28 RBI, and four stolen bases as Arizona's primary backstop.

Sun Jul 23 202312:18Diamondbacks Put Gabriel Moreno On 10-Day Injured List
The Arizona Diamondbacks placed catcher Gabriel Moreno (shoulder) on the 10-day injured list on Sunday with left-shoulder inflammation and recalled catcher Jose Herrera from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move. The Diamondbacks scratched Moreno from their starting lineup on Saturday against the Cincinnati Reds, and now he will miss some time to heal up. The 23-year-old has hit a solid .270 (60-for-222) in just his second major-league season, but his counting stats have left a lot to be desired with only three home runs, 11 doubles, 28 RBI, four stolen bases and 17 runs scored in 74 games for the D-backs. Until Moreno returns, Carson Kelly will operate as Arizona's primary backstop.

Sun Jul 9 202314:48Gabriel Moreno Taking A Seat On Sunday
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno is not starting in Sunday's series finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Carson Kelly is starting behind the dish and will catch Zach Davies in this one. Moreno is slashing .267/.312/.343 with two home runs, 26 RBI, and four stolen bases over 210 at-bats on the season. That's certainly not what the Diamondbacks or fantasy managers were hoping for thus far.

Carson Kelly will start behind the plate and bat seventh versus right-hander Zach Eflin. The expectation is that Moreno will return after his rest day here.

Tue Jun 13 202317:57Gabriel Moreno Sitting Out Again
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno is absent from the starting lineup for the second straight game. It doesn't appear that the 23-year-old is dealing with any kind of injury. Instead, Carson Kelly will be behind the plate and bat eighth versus Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler on Tuesday. Manager Torey Lovullo said that Moreno and Kelly would evenly split up the time behind the plate. So far, Kelly has caught both games since returning from the injured list. Fantasy managers should keep an eye on this situation going forward.

Thu Jun 1 202314:13Gabriel Moreno On The Bench Thursday
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno is not in Thursday's starting lineup versus the Colorado Rockies. The youngster started behind the plate in Wednesday's 6-0 win, going 1-for-4 in the process but will get a breather in an afternoon contest following Wednesday's evening game. The 23-year-old has come as advertised in first extended stretch in the big leagues. He doesn't hit for much power with just two homers on the season but hits for a high average with a .291 mark through 44 appearances on the campaign. Jose Herrera will take over behind the plate and hit ninth against Rockies right-hander Connor Seabold.

Sat May 27 202316:19Gabriel Moreno Returning On Saturday
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (teeth) is returning to the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox. Moreno sat out on Thursday for rest purposes, but missed Friday's game after undergoing a root canal earlier in the day. He came into Friday's contest as a pinch-hitter. The 23-year-old appears to be fine and ready to return to the lineup. He'll bat seventh and start behind the plate versus right-hander Garrett Whitlock on Saturday.

Tue Apr 4 202309:01Gabriel Moreno Scuffling To Begin 2023
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno hasn't had much success so far this season, posting a .154/.143/.231 slash line with no homers and one RBI across four contests. Monday's game wasn't any better, as he went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in the 5-4 loss to the San Diego Padres. Moreno, the former top prospect, doesn't have a lot of Major League experience yet, with just 87 games under his belt. During his rookie 2022 campaign, he hit .319 but with just one home run and a .733 OPS as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays. Moreno's a much better option in dynasty leagues at this point, as fantasy managers need to be patient as he adjusts to MLB pitching.

Tue Mar 21 202315:05Gabriel Moreno Hitting Ninth Against Angels
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (hand) is back in the team's Cactus League lineup on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels and left-hander Tyler Anderson. Moreno is behind the plate and is batting ninth in the lineup. The 23-year-old backstop will return to the spring lineup after being hit by a pitch in the hand on Saturday. He is completely fine and won't be in danger of missing Opening Day later this month. Even with Carson Kelly still around in Arizona, Moreno could force his way into significant playing time in his first year in the desert after being acquired in an offseason trade from the Toronto Blue Jays. He looked good in a small sample size in his MLB debut in 2022 and will be attractive in two-catcher formats.

Sat Mar 18 202322:12Gabriel Moreno Doesn't Think Injury Is Serious
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (hand) was removed from the team's Cactus League game on Saturday after being hit by a pitch on the left hand/wrist. He said the pitch caught him across his knuckles and doesn't think it's too serious. Moreno isn't scheduled to undergo X-rays for now, but he might get checked out on Sunday if it swells up overnight. It looks like the 23-year-old backstop has avoided a serious injury, but we'll have to keep an eye on him in the coming days. Arizona acquired Moreno from the Blue Jays in the offseason, and he'll have a legitimate shot at earning everyday playing time in the desert in 2023 in his first year with the team. He hit an impressive .319 with a homer and seven RBI in his first 25 big-league games last year and could provide a high average and 15-20 homers from the catching position.

Sat Mar 18 202318:59Gabriel Moreno Removed From Saturday's Game
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (hand) was forced to exit early during Saturday's Cactus League game. The 23-year-old was hit in the hand by a 95.5 mph fastball. The good news is, Moreno appears to have avoided serious injury. The team doesn't plan on having Moreno undergo further testing on his hand. It sounds like the team is going to wait-and-see how his hand does overnight. The right-handed slugger appears to be day-to-day, but fantasy managers should check back for more updates on his status.

Fri Dec 23 202217:18Gabriel Moreno, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Heading To Arizona
The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired catching prospect Gabriel Moreno and outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. from the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday in exchange for catcher/outfielder Daulton Varsho, according to sources. Moreno is a consensus top-10 prospect in all of baseball, and he has elite bat-to-ball skills and a huge arm as a defender. The 22-year-old backstop has All-Star potential in his future. He made his big-league debut in 2022 and hit a strong .319/.356/.377 in just 73 plate appearances. Moreno will split time with Carson Kelly in Arizona, but he should become Arizona's primary catcher sooner than later. Gurriel, 29, dealt with a wrist injury that sapped his power (five home runs in 2022), but he could bounce back with better health in 2023. He should be a regular for Arizona moving forward, but the move to the National League West club is a downgrade from a fantasy perspective.
