Thu May 26 201114:11Giants place INF Fontenot (groin) on DL
Giants placed INF Mike Fontenot on the 15-day disabled list with a left groin strain.
Fontenot left Wednesday's game against the Marlins after four innings with the injury. Miguel Tejada is still filling in for Pablo Sandoval at third base, so the Giants will likely rely on a combination of Emmanuel Burriss and Brandon Crawford at shortstop for the time being.

Mike Fontenot hit what turned out to be the game-winning home run in the Giants' 4-3 victory over the Dodgers on Wednesday.

Sat Oct 16 201015:58Fontenot starting over Sandoval
As expected, Mike Fontenot is starting at third base over Pablo Sandoval in Game 1 of the NLCS.
We get that Kung Fu Panda has been struggling for most of the season, but Fontenot stinks. At least Sandoval has a chance to get hot and really help the Giants. Fontenot is a black hole in the lineup, but manager Bruce Bochy is going with the former Cub.

Sun Aug 15 201012:46Bochy will go with hot hand at second
Giants manager Bruce Bochy said that Mike Fontenot will get plenty of playing time at second base, and he didn't rule out platooning him with Freddy Sanchez.
"It's a workable situation. We'll go with the hot hand," Bochy said. Fontenot should be a bench player, but Sanchez has really struggled with the stick this year, so you can't blame Bochy for taking this approach.

Wed Aug 11 201019:45Giants acquire Fontenot for OF Evan Crawford
Giants acquired 2B Mike Fontenot from the Cubs for OF Evan Crawford.
It's awfully hard to improve a team after the July 31 trade deadline, but this is still a hard one to understand. Fontenot has posted a meager .284/.332/.402 batting line in 169 at-bats for the Cubs this season and is no better than Freddy Sanchez defensively. He's not even a solid backup.
Tue Jun 29 201018:10Red Sox discussed Mike Fontenot
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Red Sox discussed acquiring Mike Fontenot from the Cubs before trading for Eric Patterson.
It's not clear if the discussions were internal or whether the Red Sox actually had talks with the Cubs. While Fontenot is obviously the better player, he also would have cost the Red Sox a better prospect.

Fri Jun 18 201012:17Fontenot to get more playing time
With Ryan Theriot slumping again, Cubs manager Lou Piniella said that Mike Fontenot will get more playing time at second base.
Piniella hinted at the possibility of a platoon earlier this month, yet Fontenot only has 15 at-bats this month. Theriot has just one hit in his last 19 at-bats and is batting .279 with an anemic .309 slugging percentage this season. With eligibility at second base and third, Fontenot is worth a speculative look in NL-only leagues.

Sat May 29 201018:51Fontenot triples twice in win over Cards
Mike Fontenot tripled twice and drove in a run in the Cubs three-run fourth inning in a 5-0 win over the Cardinals on Saturday afternoon.
Both came off starter Adam Ottavino. Fontenot is batting .337/.386/.500 over his first 104 at-bats this season, but he was pushed to the bench with the recent promotion of Starlin Castro. He's a worthy fill-in while Aramis Ramirez nurses a thumb injury, but the uncertain playing time limits his value in NL-only leagues.
Sat May 22 201022:39Fontenot delivers go-ahead single in 10th
Mike Fontenot hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 10th inning Saturday as the Cubs topped the Rangers 5-4.
Fontenot delivered the heroic single to to shallow right field as a pinch-hitter and Carlos Marmol was able to maintain the lead despite a shaky ninth inning. Fontenot is batting .309 this year in limited playing time. The Cubs are 20-24 on the season, trailing the Reds and Cardinals in the NL Central.
Sun May 9 201020:48Fontenot says he won't sulk
Mike Fontenot said he won't sulk in light of Starlin Castro's promotion.
"You know it's just part of the game," Fontenot said. "I've always been a team player, so I'm not going to try to sulk or do anything like that. Just whenever my name gets called, try to come in and do things to help the team. That's all I can do. It's out of my hands." Batting .315, it has to be a bitter pill to swallow. Fontenot's NL-only value has evaporated and he it wouldn't be shocking to see him dealt.
