Tue Aug 3 201021:42Gonzalez tosses 1 2/3 scoreless in relief
Mike Gonzalez recorded five outs without giving up a run on Tuesday night against the Angels.
He also struck out one and didn't walk a batter. Gonzalez was in line for the save, but Baltimore brought on Alfredo Simon with two outs in the ninth in a non-save situation to close out the 6-3 victory. Simon has a better overall ERA than Gonzalez, but Gonzalez has given up just one run over nine innings since his activation from the disabled list. He's been pitching better of late and is a good add for those speculating on saves.
Thu Jul 22 201022:03Gonzalez returns to action Thursday
Mike Gonzalez pitched 2/3 of a scoreless inning Thursday in his first major league action since April 9.
He had been out rehabbing a shoulder injury. He allowed a single to the first batter he faced but got two outs in between an intentional walk. Gonzalez will likely be eased back into the closer's role, but you should go ahead and stash him now if you're in need of saves.
Wed Jul 21 201010:40O's activate Gonzalez from 60-day DL
Orioles activated LHP Mike Gonzalez from the 60-day disabled list.
After a lengthy rehab assignment, Gonzalez has finally returned. The high-priced reliever hasn't pitched with the O's since April 9 due to a strained left shoulder. We're not expecting him to take the closer role from Alfredo Simon immediately, but he is certainly worth picking up across most formats.
Tue Jul 20 201016:02O's will activate closer Gonzalez on Friday
The Orioles will finally activate closer Mike Gonzalez (hamstring) from the disabled list on Wednesday.
Fantasy owners who have been patient with him can now step forward and collect their reward. Gonzalez probably won't take over the ninth inning immediately, but within a week we'd imagine he will oust Alfredo Simon. The left-handed Gonzalez showed good control, if not velocity, while down in the minor leagues. He's a must-own in pretty much all fantasy leagues.

Sat Jul 17 201009:48Gonzalez expected back during homestand
Manager Juan Samuel said he expects Mike Gonzalez to rejoin the roster during the team's homestand, which runs through the 25th.
Gonzalez struggled Friday in his first rehab appearance for Triple-A Norfolk, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk over 2/3 of an inning. He has a 4.63 ERA over 11 2/3 rehab innings but does boast a 14/2 K/BB rate. The O's would most likely ease him back into the closer role upon his return.

Wed Jul 14 201015:17O's Gonzalez (shoulder) to pitch at Triple-A
Mike Gonzalez (shoulder) will report to Triple-A Norfolk on Friday and pitch in three games before being re-evaluated.
Orioles director of minor league operations John Stockstill said there's still a "slight possibility" that he could be activated from the disabled list on Friday, but this remains the most likely scenario. Gonzalez is penciled in to pitch on Friday and Sunday. His third outing would be on Monday or Tuesday, depending on whether he needs the extra rest. Alfredo Simon is safe, for now.

Wed Jul 7 201009:17O's Gonzalez tosses scoreless inning
Mike Gonzalez (shoulder) tossed a scoreless inning in a minor league rehab appearance with Single-A Aberdeen on Tuesday night.
Gonzalez is slated to make two more rehab appearances this week, leading up to a possible return after the All-Star break. Alfredo Simon, who blew a save on Tuesday night, should keep the ninth-inning gig for now.

Mon Jul 5 201012:39O's Gonzalez won't return 'til after AS break
Mike Gonzalez (shoulder) is not expected to return to the Orioles until after the All-Star break.
Gonzalez is scheduled to make three minor league rehab appearances this week, which will take him right up to the major league Midsummer Classic. He's shown an improvement on the velocity of his fastball in recent outings and should resume his role as Baltimore's closer within a week of activation. For now, Alfredo Simon will continue to man that gig.

Fri Jul 2 201023:33O's Gonzalez gives up homer in rehab game
Mike Gonzalez (shoulder) allowed a solo home run in one inning in his first rehab game with Double-A Bowie on Friday night.
Gonzalez recorded two outs on fly balls and one on a groundball. The results aren't the end of the world right now, but he has given up home runs in consecutive rehab appearances. He's expected to throw again on Sunday. If he can put together a few productive outings, look for him to return before the All-Star break.

Wed Jun 30 201017:47O's Gonzalez not expected back til mid-July
O's president Andy MacPhail indicated Wednesday that Mike Gonzalez (shoulder) will not be activated until July 8, at the earliest.
The Orioles want to see Gonzalez throw several productive innings before activating him from the disabled list. He has allowed two runs in three appearances between the Gulf Coast League Orioles and Single-A Aberdeen. On Sunday he will move on to Double-A Bowie.

Tue Jun 29 201020:11O's Gonzalez to be eased into closer role
Orioles interim manager Juan Samuel indicated that Mike Gonzalez will be eased back into the closer role upon his return from the disabled list.
Gonzalez has allowed two runs over three rehab appearances between the GCL Orioles and Low-A Aberdeen. We've heard reports that his velocity has improved steadily in recent weeks, but sooner or later, the O's will begin to focus on his results. Gonzalez is scheduled to pitch on Tuesday and again on Thursday. It's not known when he'll be activated from the disabled list, but Alfredo Simon will continue to get save opportunities, at least initially.

Mon Jun 28 201010:23O's Gonzalez looking ugly in minors rehab
Mike Gonzalez (shoulder) allowed two runs on two hits Sunday in a rehab appearance with Single-A Aberdeen.
Not exactly promising. The Orioles have suggested that Gonzalez might rejoin the big league club by next weekend, but he should probably show that he can handle the lowest level of minor league competition before that happens. He has been on the disabled list since early April with a muscle strain in his left shoulder and is still showing diminished velocity.

Wed Jun 23 201008:59Gonzalez to throw rehab inning on Friday
Mike Gonzalez (shoulder) is scheduled to throw another inning with the GCL Orioles on Friday.
From there, he's expected to make approximately three rehab outings at Double-A or Triple-A last week. Barring any setbacks, Gonzalez could be back with the Orioles in the first week of July. This might be a good time to stash him away if he's still available in your league.

Tue Jun 22 201016:32O's Gonzalez starts rehab assignment
Mike Gonzalez tossed a scoreless inning in his first minor league rehab appearance with the GCL Orioles on Tuesday.
Gonzalez allowed one hit and struck out two. He reached the 90-91 mph range on the radar gun, an encouraging sign after he was hitting the mid 80s earlier this month. The Orioles expect Gonzalez to return before the All-Star break, which means that Alfredo Simon's grip on the closer job may only be temporary.

Mon Jun 21 201011:02O's Gonzalez to begin rehab assignment soon
Mike Gonzalez (shoulder) is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment in about one week.
Gonzalez has been throwing simulated games without pain or discomfort and could be back with the O's in about two weeks if he's able to avoid setbacks. Alfredo Simon will continue to get save opportunities for now.

Sat Jun 19 201019:09Gonzalez to throw simulated game Saturday
Mike Gonzalez (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a simulated game Saturday.
Gonzalez could begin a minor league rehab assignment in a matter of days if the simulated game goes smoothly. He's been on the disabled list since the middle of April. Alfredo Simon is filling in at closer.

Mon Jun 14 201020:17Mike Gonzalez's velocity improving
Mike Gonzalez was recently clocked at 88 mph on the radar gun, according to Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com.
We're not sure if that is an average or his max speed, but either way, it's well below his velocity from earlier this season, let alone last year, when he averaged over 92 mph on his heater. Still, Orioles president Andy MacPhail expects him back before the end of the month, which suggests that a minor league rehab assignment can't be far away.

Fri Jun 11 201019:17O's Gonzalez still throwing below 90 mph
Mike Gonzalez (shoulder) threw one inning in an extended spring training game on Friday.
Don't get too excited. Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com hears that Gonzalez was clocked at 87 mph on the radar gun. While it's a slight improvement from 85 mph, it's still well below his norm. Orioles pitching coach Rick Kranitz has suggested that Gonzalez rejoin the team so that the team can determine the next course of action, including a possible minor league rehab assignment. He's in limbo right now.

Wed Jun 9 201010:48Gonzalez throws in extended spring game
Mike Gonzalez (shoulder) allowed one hit over a scoreless inning in an extended spring training game on Tuesday.
That's the good news, but Gonzalez was only clocked in the mid 80s, according to Orioles interim manager Juan Samuel. Orioles president Andy MacPhail said he probably need another appearance in extended spring training before going out on a minor league rehab assignment, but he'll have to make some real strides with his velocity before we get optimistic about his possible return.

Sat Jun 5 201020:02Gonzalez struggles in bullpen session
Mike Gonzalez (shoulder) struggled through a bullpen session Saturday in Florida and might not return as soon as the O's had hoped.
The closer was hoping to return at some point next week, but that doesn't seem likely now. "That's what I was informed by pitching coach [Rick Kranitz], that his session wasn't that good," interim manager Juan Samuel said Saturday. "He was just not hitting his spots. I'm not really sure about the velocity, but what I was told is it wasn't that good, wasn't what was expected, so we're going to give him two off-days, come back again [on Tuesday], throw one."
