Sun Apr 10 201119:30Reds' Gomes knocks in three runs
Jonny Gomes had a two-run homer and a bases-loaded walk Sunday versus the Diamondbacks.
Particularly given the difference with the gloves, there's a good argument that the the Reds should be playnig Chris Heisey in left field. It doesn't look like a switch will come during the first few weeks of the season, though. Gomes is batting just .227, but he does have eight RBI.

Tue Mar 29 201118:09Jonny Gomes belts fifth spring homer
Jonny Gomes went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 8-3 win over the Indians.
Gomes is batting just .200 this spring, but he's countered it with five home runs and 11 RBI. He's considered the starting left fielder for the time being, but Chris Heisey is a much better fielder and probably could hit as well, if not better, at the plate, so Gomes will need to hit in order to avoid being sent to the pine.

Mon Mar 14 201118:56Gomes' average drops to .080
Jonny Gomes went 0-for-3 against the Rockies on Monday, dropping his spring average to .080.
He's now just 2-for-25 this exhibition season. Not exactly what you want to see from a player looking to prove his big 2010 was not a fluke, particularly after he hit .309 last spring.

Tue Mar 1 201114:47Gomes to start in left this year for Cincy
Reds manager Dusty Baker confirmed Tuesday that Jonny Gomes will be his starting left fielder.
Chris Heisey and Fred Lewis should probably be given regular looks out in left this season, but Baker doesn't like platoons. "Gomes deserves to play most of the time," said the Reds manager. "Everybody plays on my team. There will be times when Jonny's not going to play. I explained that to him. That's right now. Come July, August, who know? He's way ahead of pace timing-wise, body-wise, quickness. This guy worked hard in the wintertime." Gomes slugged 18 homers and tallied 86 RBI last year. He's a fine late-round fantasy outfielder.

Mon Feb 7 201105:57Gomes has 'inside track
According to MLB.com, Jonny Gomes has the "inside track" at the starting left field job.
Gomes hit .266/.327/.431 with 18 home runs in 511 at-bats last season, which look more like placeholder numbers at the left field position. Chris Heisey and Fred Lewis could eat into Gomes' playing time if they put in strong showings during spring training.

Wed Nov 3 201015:50Reds pick up Jonny Gomes' $1.75M option
Reds exercised OF Jonny Gomes' $1.75 million option for 2011.
As expected. Gomes is a poor defender in the outfield, but he hit 18 home runs and tallied 86 RBI this past season. A salary of just under $2 million isn't unreasonable for a guy with that kind of pop.

Wed Oct 20 201022:41Reds likely to pick up Gomes' option for 2011
Reds GM Walt Jocketty said Wednesday that the Reds are likely to pick up Jonny Gomes' $1.75 million option for 2011.
Gomes is a really poor defensive outfielder, but he collected 18 home runs this season and luck followed him to 86 RBI. He should play a good amount of games next year in left field while Drew Stubbs handles center and Jay Bruce mans right. Still, Gomes doesn't carry very much fantasy value.

Mon Oct 11 201018:54Gomes waiting on decision on option for '11
According to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com, the Reds have two weeks after the World Series to decide whether to exercise the $1.75 million club option on Jonny Gomes for next season.
Gomes, who turns 30 in November, batted .266/.328/.431 with 18 home runs and a career-high 86 RBI this season. He's not so bad from an offensive perspective -- especially against left-handers -- but his awful defense renders his production negligible. If the Reds don't pick up the option, he'd be best utilized in a platoon DH role in the American League.

Sat Sep 4 201020:06Gomes has two hits in win over Cards
Jonny Gomes was 2-for-4 with a two-run double in a win over the Cardinals on Saturday afternoon.
His two-run double capped a three-run first inning for the Reds. Gomes has a career-high 74 RBI this season, however he is batting just .234 with four home runs and 14 RBI over 137 at-bats since the All-Star break. The Reds are hurting for alternatives at the moment, so he'll continue to be an everyday player.
Sat Aug 21 201009:24Slumping Gomes gets some rest
A slumping Jonny Gomes was out of the lineup Friday.
The outfielder is hitting just .174 with one RBI since July 17. "Jonny's a streaky hitter," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "We know he's got a couple streaks left in him." Laynce Nix started in left field in Gomes' place and went 1-for-4 at the plate.

Sun Aug 8 201018:13Gomes reaches five times, scores four in win
Jonny Gomes reached base in all five of his plate appearances against the Cubs on Sunday and also scored on four of those occasions.
Gomes singled once in the contest and also uncharacteristically walked four times. Gomes has plus power and a solid enough batting average to be an above average starter, but his lack of walks have held him back in the past. It's unlikely that this is a change in approach, especially at age 29, but for one day at least Gomes provided both the Reds and his fantasy owners value via the walk.
Mon Jul 26 201022:45Gomes knocks three base hits Monday
Jonny Gomes had three base hits in Monday's loss to the Brewers.
He had three of the Reds' six hits on the evening. All three hits were singles, but he scored a run and added a stolen base in a nice night. With a .278 average, 13 home runs and 64 RBI, Gomes has been a better-than-expected fantasy source this season.
Tue Jul 20 201001:11Reds' Gomes homers in victory
Jonny Gomes went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and three runs scored in the Reds' 7-2 win over the Nationals on Monday.
Gomes has had just one month in which he was a particularly valuable offensive player (he hit .364/.420/.636 in May), but he's been a strong RBI guy all year long and that's given him steady value in mixed leagues. He's already established a new career high with 64 RBI this season. He actually had 20-homer campaigns in 2005, 2006 and 2009, but he didn't top 60 RBI in any of those seasons.
Sat Jun 12 201022:19Gomes homers twice, drives in six in win
Jonny Gomes finished 2-for-3 with two home runs and six RBI on Saturday to help the Reds over the Royals 11-5.
Gomes hit a three-run homer in the first inning and had another three-run shot in the third. We've always known about his power, but the bearded outfielder is even showing better-than-expected plate coverage this season and owns a .307/.372/.547 batting line with nine homers and 47 RBI.
Tue May 18 201000:03Gomes up to 24 RBI already
Jonny Gomes went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in a win over the Brewers on Monday.
Gomes quietly has five homers and 24 RBI to go with a .295 average on the season. He had 20 jacks in just 281 at-bats last season and is proving the Reds need his pop in the lineup daily.
Thu Apr 8 201015:44Reds' Gomes hits walkoff homer versus Cards
Jonny Gomes hit a walkoff homer off Jason Motte in the bottom of the ninth as the Reds beat the Cardinals 2-1 on Thursday.
It was the second hit of the game for Gomes, who has started in left field on back-to-back days after sitting in favor of Laynce Nix in the season opener. Based on his performance last year, Gomes deserves a chance to be a regular. He'll probably hit 30 homers if he gets 500 at-bats.
