Jonny Gomes (knee) is back in Boston's lineup for Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays.

Thu Feb 28 201317:05Gomes gets stitches in knee, day-to-day
Jonny Gomes required three stitches in his left knee after crashing into the left field fence on Thursday.
The Red Sox are calling him day-to-day, so it's not a major concern. Gomes is expected to function as Boston's primary left fielder this season.

Wed Feb 27 201322:31Jonny Gomes goes deep
Jonny Gomes belted a solo homer in Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Orioles.
Gomes crushed a ball over the left field wall against O's left-hander Zach Britton, which should come as no surprise since he always crushes southpaws. The Red Sox plan to start him in left field against righties this season, as well.

Sun Dec 2 201208:47Jonny Gomes not seen as platoon player
The Red Sox are not viewing Jonny Gomes as a platoon player.
Gomes has a career .894 OPS against left-handers, as opposed to a .732 mark against right-handers, but the Sox plan to give him a chance to be an everyday player. "He'll have the opportunity to earn the highest number of at-bats that he can," manager John Farrell said. Despite Boston's current stance, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Ryan Kalish and/or Daniel Nava see plenty of starts in left field against righties.

Wed Nov 21 201220:49Gomes inks two-year, $10M deal with Red Sox
Red Sox signed OF/DH Jonny Gomes to a two-year, $10 million contract.
It's probably more than most were expecting him to get, but there's no doubt that Gomes can be a weapon if used correctly. The 32-year-old has put up an impressive .894 OPS in his career versus left-handed pitching and belted 18 homers in 2012 for the A's. It will often be an adventure with him in left field defensively, but his bat is well suited for the Green Monster. The Sox seem likely to get a left-handed bat to pair with him.

Wed Nov 21 201220:27Jonny Gomes gets $10M from Red Sox
Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Jonny Gomes' two-year deal with the Red Sox is for $10 million.
It's a big bump from his $1 million salary from 2012 and is about twice as much as the A's offered him in September, according to Slusser. Gomes batted .262/.377/.491 with 18 homers this season and boasts a career .894 OPS against left-handed pitching. He's a good fit for the Green Monster at Fenway. Gomes' deal should be finalized soon.

Wed Nov 21 201215:12Gomes' deal with BoSox pending a physical
Joe McDonald of ESPN Boston reports that the Red Sox are closing in on a two-year contract with Jonny Gomes, pending a physical.
It sounds like the physical is the only thing in the way of the deal being official. Terms aren't yet known, but Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that Gomes was seeking $3-4 million per season. He earned $1 million in 2012 while hitting .262/.377/.491 with 18 homers and an .868 OPS.

Wed Nov 21 201213:21Red Sox, Gomes closing in on two-year deal
Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox are "closing in" on a two-year deal with Jonny Gomes.
This confirms a report by Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com. The Red Sox are also talking to Cody Ross, but Gomes is likely to sign for significantly less. The 31-year-old batted .262/.377/.491 with 18 home runs and an .868 OPS in 333 plate appearances with the A's this season. Gomes is a pretty terrible fielder and has enjoyed most of his success against southpaws, so it's not clear whether the Red Sox plan to use him as a full-time player.

Wed Nov 14 201214:16Jonny Gomes seeking multi-year deal
Eddie A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun reports that Jonny Gomes is looking for a multi-year contract.
The Orioles are one of the team who have expressed interest in Gomes, but they are reluctant to offer more than one year. The 31-year-old batted .262/.377/.491 with 18 home runs and an .868 OPS in 333 plate appearances with the A's this season. With his strong production against left-handed pitching, he could be a useful piece in a platoon situation.

Mon Nov 12 201222:31O's indeed interested in Jonny Gomes
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal has confirmed that the Orioles are pursuing free agent outfielder Jonny Gomes.
Buster Olney of ESPN was first to catch wind of the O's interest. Gomes, 31, registered a solid .262/.377/.491 batting line with 18 homers and 47 RBI in 99 games this past season for the American League West-champion A's. And he was especially good against left-handed pitchers. Baltimore could platoon him in left field.

Mon Nov 12 201215:11Orioles could pursue Jonny Gomes
Buster Olney of ESPN.com hears that the Orioles "could be a fit" for Jonny Gomes.
Gomes is no longer seen as an option for the A's after they traded for Chris Young, but he shouldn't have trouble finding a job after batting .262/.377/.491 with 18 homers for Oakland. A masher versus left-handed pitching, Gomes could be a free agent bargain if his new team uses him correctly.

Sat Oct 20 201219:51Gomes A's future uncertain after Young trade
Saturday's addition of Chris Young may have a negative impact on Jonny Gomes potentially resigning with the Athletics this offseason.
A's GM Billy Beane admitted as much on Saturday when announcing the Young deal. Unless there is another deal in the works, it may be difficult to find a spot for Gomes on the roster for 2013.

Fri Oct 12 201214:02Jonny Gomes likely to return to A's?
Athletics manager Bob Melvin said re-signing impending free agent Jonny Gomes is "a work in progress."
Gomes is viewed as a key clubhouse presence, something Melvin says general manager Billy Beane is well aware of. Slated to turn 33 next month, Gomes was also pretty productive for Oakland this season, batting .262/.377/.491 with 18 homers, including a .299/.413/.561 line against southpaws. He seems likely to return on a relatively modest one-year deal.

Wed Oct 3 201201:02Gomes homers as A's tie Rangers in AL West
Jonny Gomes connected on a solo homer on Tuesday night, helping to lead the Athletics in a crucial 3-1 victory over the Rangers, pulling them into a tie for the AL West lead with just one game left to play.
Gomes finished the night 1-for-2 and also drew a walk. His solo blast off Matt Harrison in the sixth provided a very valuable insurance run, increasing the A's lead to 3-1. He's provided plenty of punch in limited duty, slashing .262/.377/.491 with 18 bombs and 47 RBI in only 280 at-bats.

Sat Sep 22 201218:53Gomes blasts pinch-hit two-run homer in 13th
Jonny Gomes blasted a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the 13th inning on Saturday, but the Athletics were unable to outlast the Yankees.
Gomes seems to have a knack for coming through in big situations, and none was bigger than his shot off Freddy Garcia on Saturday. The blast led a four-run 13th inning, but the Yankees struck back for four of their own in the bottom half of the frame and eventually won in the 14th. On the season, Gomes is hitting .259 with 17 homers and 45 RBI in just 255 at-bats.

Fri Aug 24 201223:07Jonny Gomes' two-run blast powers A's to win
Jonny Gomes blasted a two-run homer in the eighth inning on Friday, powering the Athletics to a 5-4 victory over the Rays.
He finished the night just 1-for-4, but that one hit was the critical blow in the game. The towering drive off Joel Peralta broke a 3-3 tie and delivered a much needed victory to the A's. Gomes has provided solid production for the A's this season, hitting .248 with 15 homers and 37 RBI.

Wed Aug 8 201201:21Gomes's big day helps A's blast the Angels
Jonny Gomes went 2-for-5 with a homer and drove in two runs in Oakland's 10-4 victory against the Angels Tuesday.
Gomes has been your prototypical useful deep AL-only starter this year. While he doesn't garner big at-bats, he produces offensively in the capacity that he's capable. Now hitting .256/.372/.468 with 12 homers and 32 RBI in limited playing time, Gomes has again proved to be a productive and powerful force when facing left-handed pitching.

Sat Jul 14 201200:14Jonny Gomes' slam downs Liriano, Twins
Jonny Gomes blasted a grand slam home run of Francisco Liriano, leading the Athletics to a 6-3 win over the Twins on Friday.
Gomes finished the night 2-for-4 and drove home five of the Athletics' six runs. After Liriano dominated for the first three innings, he appeared to get somewhat rattled in the fourth after an error by Denard Span in center field. Immediately following the error, he walked Chris Carter and Gomes hit the first pitch he saw over the wall in left field. While his playing time has been sporadic, he's still shown to be a productive and powerful force when facing left-handed pitching.

Sat Jun 16 201219:39Gomes' pinch-hit homer leads A's over Padres
Jonny Gomes provided a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the seventh inning on Saturday, leading the Athletics to a 6-4 win over the visiting Padres.
Gomes was called upon in a 4-4 game to hit for Seth Smith, who had actually homered earlier. And it worked out beautifully. Gomes had been 0-for his last 34 as a pinch hitter before the critical blast off Luke Gregerson. He's batting just .232 on the season but has provided solid punch with seven homers and 18 RBI in a platoon role.

Sat May 5 201223:37Gomes' homer in 12th powers A's to win
Jonny Gomes launched a go-ahead solo home run in the 12th inning Saturday night, leading the Athletics to a 4-3 victory over the Rays in Tampa Bay.
Gomes pinch hit for Seth Smith in the seventh inning and walked twice before coming to the plate in the 12th. After falling behind Joel Peralta 1-2, he lined a no=doubter into the seats in left field to put Oakland ahead for good. Gomes is only hitting .239 on the season, but he does have five big flies in just 48 at-bats.
